A Human, a Klingon and a Vulcan were all in a shuttlecraft when suddenly the engine began to malfunction and the shuttlecraft began hurtling to the planet below.

The three ran to the shuttlecraft hatch and yanked it open.

"In the name of the Federation of Planets!" cried the Human as she threw herself out the shuttlecraft doorway.

"In the name of Kahless the Unforgettable!" shouted the Klingon as he too leapt out of the shuttlecraft.

"In the name of Pure Logic!" exclaimed the Vulcan, as he pulled out his communicator and requested to be beamed up.

Knowing the earth was doomed, the Federation decided to send a ship to spread human DNA to as many planets as possible, and promoted former "Planet of Lust" multi-season winner Jimmy Kirk to "Captain."

Decades later Kirk's DNA was used to create a bearded clone to continue the plan, with a few corrections made after Kirk's splooge caused some serious problems with Klingon physiology, forehead-wise.

If you take the 'S' & 'p' from September & stick it on the 'eight' you get Speight which if you say it with a lisp kind of sounds like 'space'

Or, not having rtfa & pulling this out of my butt, something to do with TOS & their original air date?

/Subby's mention of 55 years in the headline helped narrow that down, thanks

Lower Decks is something different.

Prodigy looks like it may be in the spirit of TAS, which is something they've basically ignored for decades.

Given just how bad the stupid culture war has gotten and how violent some people are over it, do you really think a thought provoking social commentary in the guise of a sci-fi show would survive today's social media driven frothing neck flappers?

There would be mass shootings at Paramount Studios Tours and cast members would have to go in hiding for being "too woke" or whatever.

It's safer to just shift it to generic sci-fi action show with CGI aliens until this stupid culture war is over.

Lower Decks is fantastic. Just the right amount of mocking the franchise, while honoring it too. I am a very casual Trek fan and I get a lot of the nods and homages. Best Trek in a long time.

Trying to watch Discovery, but it is meh so far. Only 15 eps into Season 1. Hate the new Klingons. Either go TOS design or go TNG style. No look looks terrible.

Discovery is so frustrating. It occasionally feels like it has potential, then squanders it. Michael Burnham is the worst lead in Star Trek and the show insists on completely centering around her.  There are also way too many plot decisions that just make zero farking sense.

Lower Decks has been very good, but once in a while it has a bit like the Mugato banging in the last episode that are just unnecessary. Overall, I really like it, though.

The VR Star Trek bridge simulator was impressive. Really made you feel like you're on the bridge and have responsibilities. But navigating and fighting out the view screen was difficult, even with the tools they gave you. Very claustrophobic. The Star Trek Online 3rd person ship view was much more satisfying but in a very different way.

Agreed on both counts. I watched the first 2.5 seasons of Discovery (curiosity, then boredom, then inertia), but it really was frustrating. I strongly suspect that the writer's bible for the show specifies that (a) Michael Burnham is required to display the entire range of human emotions in each episode, and (b) she is not allowed to make good choices under any circumstances. Plus the weird retconning to give Spock a secret human sister was just weirdly weird.

I'm enjoying Lower Decks a lot. The first few episodes were really callout-heavy, but once they got that out of their system it settled into its own groove. And I love it when Paul F. Tompkins pops up in shows I like.

I couldn't agree with either of you more about Discovery.  Every time I thought it was going to go somewhere - anywhere - that gave it more potential, they ripped it back.  I still think living in the alternate universe with the spore drive living as fugitives from the pirate Federation would have made for a better show than this drivel.  It is so centred on Michael that when they had the episode featuring Lt. Nilsson (Airiam) it was the first time I think I'd heard or noticed her name.  Just now I was looking up IMDB and realized that I couldn't have told you half of their names.  It's very pretty but I gave up on it.  As a show, I think it would survive if they killed off the Burnham character a la 'Poochie died on his way back to his home planet'.

I've been meaning to watch Lower Decks, and the comments here reinforce that I really should.

It is comedic Star Trek fanfic set in the TNG time period and for that it is very well done. There is a lot of over-the-top stupid things going on (like a zombie outbreak), but even that isn't really too different than the TNG episode when the crew devolved. It certainly isn't a big let-down like Disco and Picard.
