My father was a naval medic assigned to a marine detachment. He was stationed in Japan during the mid 1970s and was part of a plan to go back into Vietnam if and when the time was right. Everything so far about Afghanistan lines up with Vietnam. The US cannot handle defeat and one of the poorest nations in the world has once again defeated it.

We accomplished everything the Bush administration planned to accomplish in Afghanistan, but that's only because there never was a plan.

From pictures I see posted online by friends living in Vietnam, it appears to be a thriving and growing country. The skylines of both HMC and Hanoi are incredible. If we leave Afghanistan alone I predict in 20 years they will be hosting the Winter Olympics.

I'm waiting to see what Lindsey's response will be if Biden does have to send troops over to Afghanistan. I'm betting it'll be lines about "forever wars" and "military excursions to distract from failed policies"

I mean, that worked out so well for us last time.

He's more of a JAG guy, not NCIS.  But both he and NCIS need to be cancelled - they've gone on way too long and they've just gotten silly.

They've been putting the plans on display with bright lights and sirens announcing that these are their plans and they always manage to get what they want.

Revealing the plan is only a bad idea when there is someone opposing the plan. This is just Lindsey rubbing his ladybugs all over the sane anti-war contingent in the US simply because he can.

He goes to sleep in his big, four post bed with the drapes and the sweet, sweet scent of pool boy lingering.  He wakes up in Kabul with no money, no identification.  No one recognizes him.  The Taliban arrest him for wearing a silk dressing gown in public.  He's tossed in a cell.

It's why God didn't make me one them Movie 'Jumpers" types.  I'd do stuff like that.

Hate to slam a fellow service-member's service, but Graham was a USAF JAG who likely never ever actually qualified with a weapon, let alone be required to carry one around everywhere they go.  The only place he's going is a fully built up airbase somewhere far from the front-lines where he can have his fluffy slippers, Starbucks coffee, and every fast-food joint imaginable.

He would lose his mind if he had to deploy like Marines or Army. In fact, we had an Air Force JAG LtCol get sent to our forward deployed location (Marines) and she raised hell for the fact that:
1.  She didn't get a "dorm room", and was in a tent and a cot. NO BED (how dare we live like savages)
2.  Didn't have solid WiFi/Internet access
3.  We didn't have a single fast food place, only a DFAC
4.  He tent wasn't completely surrounded by Hesco and T-walls
5.  Oh, and lack of "adequate air conditioning. i.e, her tent didn't get cold enough for her

THAT will be Lindsey Graham on deployment.  100%.  He'd wilt with having to carry a sidearm on his hip, or, cherish the thought, required to wear  full battle-rattle, combat load, and carry an M4 (or IAR, in our case) everywhere he went.

Supposedly the Taliban took the Panjshir and the resistance is pretty much over.

Pakistan air power and drones took a shot at Massoud and protected the Taliban during their advance.

And people are pissed in Kabul.

The US wasn't militarily defeated in either instance, neither the NVA or Taliban destroyed US forces in the field and drove them from the country, and looking at it that way was always part of the problem.

We went into these places looking for a fight with an enemy defined one way in our heads, with clear "good/bad" sides, only to find that the reality didn't match that and instead was a complex mess of internal divisions, and then just learned to live with the cognitive dissonance making problems worse and worse until it became too much of a mess to continue.

In both cases the puppet states we buily were monstrously corrupt and ineffectual, never built around the realities and needs of the people living there, and the constant conflict and military force just fed and reinforced the shiatstorm, instead of letting the locals sort their own shiat out.

Then we got tired of it and left, in both instances, and the factions that emerged organically from the local communities ended up winning the power struggles over the governments we set up that were entirely reliant on the US to function.

There is a huge difference between the Taliban and the NVA/Vietcong. The Taliban prefer keeping their country obsolete in terms of technology and infrastructure because it makes it easier to subjugate the citizens.

Will we learn anything from Afghanistan? What is certain is that monuments will again rise to honor the noble few who served in yet another faraway place.

In addition to such worthy efforts, it is time for America to answer the pleas of history and heed the ghosts of war by carving the lesson of Afghanistan into our national soul with the same fierce devotion with which our nation will carve 2,461 heartbreaking, beloved, honored American names into cold gray granite.
