Goofus is Gallant's rough trick.

Gallant makes wholesome magazines for children.  Goofus goes out searching for woods porn.

At a certain age, I read Highlights religiously. But for the life of me, without Googling I cannot remember a damn thing about it aside from Goofus and Gallant. And that might only be from all the references to them here on Fark.

Did you know Highlights has a sister publication designed for toddlers? No, I don't mean preschoolers, I mean can't read, can't speak, can't potty, *might* have the motor control to turn the page. How do you design a magazine for literal babies, other than maybe make it out of Cheerios?

Granted, I know nothing about child development, and your child will go to Tufts at age 10 while mine are drinking leaded paint right out of the can.

Hi-5 is better than you might think. It's meant to be read to the child and they can learn to flip pages and do activities

My question is how the heck Highlights is still profitable in the year 2021?
I'm glad...I loved it as a kid...but it's pretty amazing that it is still chugging along.

Big fan of the Hidden Picture and Goofus/Gallant sections as well as the "art and poems submitted by our readers".

It's the type of thing grandparents give their grandkids.  Plenty of grandparents out there.

Also, they harass you nonstop to accept "free gift" puzzle books and tote bags which you have to pay for if you want to keep. An ancient business model to be sure.

Highlights is still ordered by a lot of DRs and Dentists offices. I knew a few people who worked for them some years back and said that they were horrible to work for.
