Oh wow, they're in the news again.

Fun fact: the DoD used to subsidize school lunches. Because they had to refuse to many draftees during WWII because of conditions related to childhood malnutrition.

It's different now of course with food. The USA wastes a full half of food produced, often intentionally, simply to create artificial scarcity to keep prices up. This is after subsidizing crops and meat and dairy with taxes.

This is a crime. Well, in an actually functioning civilization it would be, here it's just business.

Anyone -at any age- in the USA should be able to walk into any aid office (or school cafeteria) and simply say "I need help buying food"

The person (or terminal) says "I understand. How much are you short for the price this month? Can I see your ID? Okay, here's your benefit card, come back if this doesn't do it, stop using it if you don't need it anymore, have a nice day."

You can pay with it out of the billions we subsidize big AG and farmers not to grow crops.

"If it doesn't affect me, it doesn't affect anyone" is the standard GOP position on everything.  That's why they're subhuman.

The cruelty is the point, but not when you get publicity for starving children.

Still okay to starve adults, however.

Other members described the board's changing course as giving in to intimidation.
"If it's food and free lunch today, it will be forced masking, forced whatever-we-want-to-do in schools because the mob will have the power to tell us what to do," Anthony Zenobia said, according to the Journal Sentinel.

He DOES understand what being an "elected  representative" means right?

But other members didn't feel the same way. At the meeting, the Journal Sentinel reported, Karin Rajnicek, who made headlines for saying free school meals could make students and families "spoiled,"

F*cking Karin, man.

He's a republican; the group that literally runs on the platform of "Government is too big, so elect me and I will make sure to do as little work as is humanly possible while punishing all the 'other' people".

So long as there are Farm Price Supports  to keep the costs of food higher (and I do understand those are necessary so that it's economically viable for farmers to grow things) there MUST be free food available to those who are then priced out of the market.  That's just basic human decency

Yes, but it depends on the translation. Conservatives Bible has something about letting them stay up later on school nights on this one.

Later on they recommend they join the military.

Do we have a lot of extra MRE's from Afghanistan?  That will turn them off food at a young age.  It'll be four years before we can get ourselves in to another war, so those things are just sitting in storage.

K rations and the MRE bread.  Kids will be eating air instead.

I live about a half hour from there.  I can confirm the lunatic conservatives have taken over the city and are running it into the ground.

I volunteer at the local "Feeding America".  One of the saddest things in the world is a hungry child in the richest country on earth staring at an empty plate at lunchtime while his/her classmates gorge themselves on Doritos and Coca cola because healthy food 'is for poor losers'.  We fill backpacks full of food on Fridays, because we know that's the only food some of these kids are going to get until Monday at lunchtime.

He's a so-called conservative, which means he thinks being an elected official means he's finally in the "god given" position of authority over other people that he deserves to be in, simply because he's "christian". And that he's supposed to use that power to make other people suffer.

AFAIK, the only poor people that exist in Waukesha live in the City of Waukesha (where this story occurs).

Waukesha County itself is very wealthy.  I think it's one of the top 3 counties for income in the state.  Median income is above 90k which is high for the Midwest.

"I cannot relate to being hungry" is probably the most honest thing I've heard from a politician in a while.
I sure can relate to being hungry, not so much when I was a kid because my grandparents would always help us out if we were in a bind, but when I was going through university I was phenomenally poor.

empathy is something they really aught to try teaching in schools, or in the religious places these people claim to attend.
