The best thing to do is wrap it before you tap it.

Of course, the good news is they're working on a vaccine. Not every effort succeeds on the first attempt.

Or the 500th.  We've been working on vaccines for a very long time, but HIV is just a terrible virus.

This means some poor soul(s) contracted HIV during the trials...don't lose sight of that.

I just looked it up - I actually hadn't known how long ago the various trials had been happening. They don't seem to make headline news over here, even though it really is a big deal. I only remember seeing something a few years ago, possibly when this Janssen trial was started.

Moderna has an mRNA one that might work better.

That's good news. I only found a few articles about it just now, but apparently they plan on starting phase 1 trials soon.

If HIV became airborne, gay men would be shipped off to camps faster than you can say "Rock Hudson."

Don't know what's funny about that statement. Conservatives were absolutely talking about quarantining gay men in the 80s, and HIV wasn't even airborne. They also talked about just straight-up executing us.

If HIV, a.k.a. the "gay plague" had become airborne, we'dve been the first to go. Reagan would have shipped us off himself.

austerity101: If HIV became airborne...

If HIV was airborne, then why would your sexuality matter at all?  Anyone could get it just by proximity, and homosexuals would have no additional risk relative to anyone else...

It's like saying "What if aircraft couldn't actually fly??  All the pilots would be out of jobs!"     No, there would be no pilots in the first place.

I said "became," though, not "was."

As with many things, it would be more about perception and beliefs than about reality.

"anyone ever ask what would happen if we had put all of our research dollars into education and prevention rather into wet bench work?"

Ashelth, 11 years ago when he got uninvited to the hiv/lentivirus study section

The protocol for HIV vaccine trials includes councilling session on transmission and prevention for all test groups.  And usually free access to condoms.  Which is aajor complicating factor in the clinical trails.

Actually...

https://globalnews.ca/news/7907344/johnson-johnson-court-baby-powder-verdict/
Johnson & Johnson asks U.S. Supreme Court to void $2B baby powder verdict

The evidence, Burlison wrote, included that the company knew there was asbestos in products aimed at mothers and babies, knew of the potential harm and "misrepresented the safety of these products for decades."
Nine of the women have died from ovarian cancer, lawyers for the plaintiffs said

Johnson & Johnson denies that its talc products cause cancer and it called the verdict in the Missouri trial "at odds with decades of independent scientific evaluations confirming Johnson's Baby Powder is safe, is not contaminated by asbestos and does not cause cancer."
