Bowie was also the sailor with a shark costume in Yellowbeard.

Flea had an amazing performance in Motorama

Didn't watch too much this week, but did see a couple over the weekend (daughter was in celebrating her 20th and wanted a movie night).

Cruella - Emma Stone 100% makes this movie work. In fact, she's the only reason to see it. She does a fantastic job. Otherwise, it's a very strange movie. It's basically "Sympathy For the Devil(le): The Movie" (and yes, I know that's an actual movie from the '60s, but it's the point I'm making). She was probably one of the most-evil Disney villains in the cartoon, but here they make you feel bad for her. By the end, I told my wife and daughter I hope she gets those 100+ Dalmatians in the sequel! They found a person who was more reviled than the most reviled Disney villain in history, and that makes you like Cruella. It's just weird.

Birds of Prey - Seen it many times, 3rd favorite DC movie (behind Shazam and THE Suicide Squad), but the reason I'm mentioning it now is how it utterly pulled my daughter in entirely. I started it after Cruella without saying a word just to see, and she was like "What is this?" I said "It's Birds of Prey, about Harley Quinn". She gave a "Meh" look, but once the intro started, she had her eyes on it. And she never. took. them. off. She absolutely loved it. She 'SHHHH!"ed her mom and I (usually it's always the other way around) and didn't even seem to blink. She's a self-admitted phone junkie, can't go more than 5 min without checking it, and she did not touch her phone ONCE. I was amazed. She was more engrossed in that than Cruella.

Jolt (2021)- I know that there was a movie and that I watched the whole thing but all I can remember is how Kate Beckinsale took a sledgehammer covered in C4 coated in TNT and absolutely obliterated the Hot/Crazy Scale. Overall not too bad for a silly action flick. Predictable, corny, fun, 'splosions.

Jurassic Hunt (2021)- Jurassic Park for hunters instead of tourists. Actors all seem ready to film a softcore porn but end up confused because this is a movie about people hunting dinosaurs. I like awful movies. This was pretty bad and fun for a while but got repetitive.

Othello (1995)- I generally tend to like Kenneth Branagh but was quite disappointed by his performance as Iago. He felt more like a spoiled man-child than a cunning and vicious cold, calculating villain. Irène Jacob's Desdemona felt off too. Meh.

TV:

Brand New Cherry Flavor: Season 1 (2021)- .......................... What in the actual f**k did I just watch??? Binged the whole season in 3 days and I'm not usually a binge-watcher. One of the most surreal, weirdest shows I have seen, maybe ever. Easily one of the top 3 strangest sex scenes I have ever seen on a screen. I really want to say more but I feel like saying anything could possibly spoil something. It's that absurd. My only negative was the ending. After a season of pedal-to-the-floor hallucinogenic psychosis it seems like they didint know how to properly end it and just went with _______. Overall, holy shiat what?

Shiat. I read it in the slideshow format then deslided it before submitting. Although, I guess it's better to have an off-kilter deslided list than to suffer through an actual slideshow.

Okay, I gotta ask: what's the appeal of these?!

I saw that a new Z-grade sci-fi movie came out this past week (Jurassic Shark 2 Aquapocalypse) and apparently the full movie video (I can't call this a movie) was already on Youtube.

I watched about 7 minutes total (it's 70 minutes long) and it was soooooo bad. Like not even "so bad it's good", but atrociously bad. Like I felt shame for the people in it. They claim this shark is 10x bigger than any other shark in history (They're obviously taking from The Meg, even down to "we disturbed an ancient area that released this! and it's also 50,000,000 years old!" , but this is the fin they use for terror (as well as MS PowerPoint credits with full effects)

And the acting. OMG the acting. I have never acted beyond a middle school play where I was a part of the Lollipop Guild, and my acting was 1000x better than anyone on this! 95% of the movie felt like it was filmed on a Razr phone from early aughts. How does this happen?!

Making use of my Prime membership:
Bridesmaids (2011)
Funny enough, given that actually most comedies aren't really funny anymore.

Borat (2020)
I'm glad I finally got to see it. Maria Bakalova is amazing, and at least before she is cleaned up she is believable as a 15-year-old girl. Some of her scenes took a lot of guts to perform.

The Marksman (2021)
A generic film about people running from a Mexican cartel. Still, it kept my interest, and the scenery was beautiful.

I'm a huge fan of Rifftrax/MST3K and so are my kids, so we do our own. Usually we hope for a "so bad it's good" type film but don't really come across them that often. Most of the time we end up constantly making fun of the movie, picking out terrible lines that become running jokes amongst ourselves, mocking the actors terrible performances, etc. It's more about audience participation and laughing at something awful than it is just watching a crappy movie.

There are very few reasons I would accept, and that's one of them. Nice. I can see doing that. Unfortunately for me, I was just at my desk, alone, with a pair of headphones as I tried to stomach that atrocity.

When going to bed, lots and lots of "In Search Of" with Leonard Nimoy.

I don't know what it is - the aesthetic, Mr. Nimoy's incredible voice, the brutalist-ish 1970s analog synth soundtrack, it...it's just beyond awesome. And somehow, comforting.

Smokey and the Bandit - 1977 I found a version online with the original audio. Not the crappy voiceovers of Jackie Gleason.

The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh - 1979 Bad movie bout basketball and astrology.  Stockard Channing is in it. Plus cameos by Kareem Abdul Jabaar, Meadowlark Lemmon. It also stars Dr J.

I finally got a PS5 so that  can get movies to go with my 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos set up. There are the movies I tested on it.

John Wick, Chapters 1, 2, and 3
Overall, chapter 1 was the best movie with it being the original and let the background still be mysterious. The acting was good all around and not over the top. The sound was just OK and not a good showcase of Dolby Atmos, despite what the internet says.

Chapter 2 as a movie was OK. It built upon the world but things started to go over the top. Lawrence Fishburne cannot chew scenery properly in his role. The lady who played Batgirl for a bit was good as the deaf henchwoman. The sound was fantastic. The fight in the catacombs is the showcase for Dolby Atmos and a 7+ speaker setup. Gunshots in front and bullets bouncing behind and all kinds of awesome. Really, if you have a Dolby Atmos setup with at least 7 speakers at ear level, get this movie to show case it.

Chapter 3 was OK but getting silly. Way too much over the top by the actors except for Lance Reddick as the concierge. He played his part great with reservation until he did great body control work to show agitation during shotgun weapon upgrade scene. This movie was almost a video game analog in how weapons and enemies were getting upgraded. The attack dogs were awesome too. The sound was better than chapter 1 but not as good as chapter 2.

I also watched Baby Driver.  Good tight movie with good acting and great stunt driving. The sound was awesome for the music in how it comes from all the speakers and just engulfs you in the groove. Gun and car noises were OK but not spectacular. Doesn't matter since the music made up for it and how it was used. This is also a great showcase of a home theater Dolby Atmos sound system.

See - Jason Mamoa is the star in this Apple TV series about a dystopian future where most of humanity has long been wiped out and the surviving humans are all blind. Watched the first two episodes last night. I'm going to continue to ignore the obvious plot holes and suspend my sense of reason and enjoy it for what it is.
Good action, beautiful cinematography, interesting premise and by and large, decent acting.
I think there are eight episodes in season 1 and season 2 has just started up, with Dave Bautista as a new character. Hope it continues to be pretty cool.

John Lurie, Richard Edson, and Eszter Balint are/were all musicians and in Stranger Than Paradise.  Lurie and Tom Waits were in Down by Law, Joe Strummer and Screamin' Jay Hawkins were in Mystery Train...Jim Jarmusch seems to like casting musicians.  Iggy Pop has been in a couple.  RZA has, too.  Not really cameo roles, though.
Strummer and Courtney Love are both in Alex Cox's Straight to Hell, with the Pogues and Elvis Costello.

Not much this week, trying to enjoy the dying days of summer.

The Courier (2021) - Benedict Crumbleboink plays a salesman drawn into becoming a spy at the height of the cold war.  Based on a true story.  Pretty good if you like realistic spy movies.  Rating: B-

Other than that, just some TV.  I watched a few episodes of Wellington Paranormal. It's ok, but I don't love it as much as What We Do In The Shadows.

As for musician cameos, I'll also go with a TV show in Highlander the Series.  It had a lot of recurring parts for random rock stars like Rodger Daltry, Joan Jett, Vanity, Sheena Easton, the guy from the Fine Young Cannibals and a few others.  Fun stunt casting if nothing else.

Loving the Criterion Channel.  Odd and perfect assortment for the cenephile. Commentaries and bonus features give it a massive advantage over other steaming avenues.  Rewatched The Last Wave, the big Chill  and The Brood.
Planning on binging the Lone Wolf And Cub movies sometime soon. Before that though, I will be taking on a tarkovsky deep dive. I loved  Solaris and Stalker so much I'm willing to give the directors other efforts a good chance.

Didn't have a lot of time for movies this week. As far as cameos, Flea in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a good one. Dwight Yoakam as a shady-ass doctor in Crank. And not a movie, but there are a whole bunch of them in The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
