Nice to see people doing what the DOJ refuses to do, but damn it would be so much better and accountability that much more likely if the DOJ actually got off the sidelines here.

I know this is Fark, and we don't read the articles, but this is an especially stupid comment given:

"Officer Jason DeRoche, an 18-year veteran of the Capitol Police and a Navy veteran, said the civil lawsuit isn't about winning a financial settlement. Rather, he said, the lawsuit aims to set the record straight about what happened on Jan. 6 and make sure history doesn't repeat itself.
"We don't want something like this happening ever again," DeRoche said."

Makes me wonder if those Capitol Police officers that committed suicide knew the shiat they would be in if the 1/6 plan didn't work out.

I hope they ask Trump to read a transcript of what he said.  Because, Trump can definitely read and certainly wont argue that the literal meaning of what he said is completely opposite from what it means.

This is a side note, but the way this is happening is unambiguous proof that Police unions are illegitimate.

If police unions were even slightly legitimate, it would be the DC union filing this lawsuit, not the victims having to file it with their own money. The kind of abuse where your employer or some external entity with influence over your employer intentionally kills or negligently causes their employees to die is literally the specific offense which unionization as a whole was created to combat, and doing things like filing this lawsuit is the bare-bones minimum absolutely required by any real union.

Like... even vague national orders like the food service union would have your back if McDonalds took the direction of some fake billionaire to intentionally arrange the murder of five or six burger flippers and escape criminal account for it.

It's not being a "doomer" to notice reality. Is there any evidence that the DOJ is investigating Trump or his cronies for anything?

"Was this intentionally about race? Or was it that these were racist people acting to keep the person they wanted in office remain in power?" Chemerinsky asked.

If pressed to choose, with a gun at my head, I would pick the latter of the two -- but race underlies all of it -- like so much is the USA. One begets the other.

Trump was the emotional candidate of racists  -- but their priority on that day was keeping Trump in power. Because keeping him in power would  continue the racism.

Can't get past paywall. Who represents the plaintiffs?

2021-08-26 12:22:30 PM
While I do think that some amount of accountability is in order - the fact that the capitol police has a war chest at the ready to start dropping lawsuits regardless of the inevitability of the outcome, really makes you think if we should consider looking into how they get all that money.

2021-08-26 12:22:43 PM
I'm pretty sure that Comrade Combover doesn't have a pot to piss in--or at least not one that isn't owned by Russian "bankers" anyway--so even if they manage to get a big judgment against him it's likely to be uncollectable.

From the Farking article:

But unlike the criminal cases, where prosecutors must prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, the plaintiffs in this civil case have a lower bar: a "preponderance of evidence" or a greater than 50% chance. Chemerinsky said it's generally easier to prove a civil conspiracy claim than a criminal one.

Attorneys for the seven Capitol Police officers also have the advantage that the criminal cases are proceeding alongside their lawsuit and are already producing evidence that can be used against the defendants in the civil case.

Actually placing blame for 1/6 on Trump is probably in that grey area between reasonable doubt and preponderance of the evidence; IE, a civil suit may be the way to go here.

Oh, I'm pretty sure they'll get good representation without a war chest.  WTF is wrong with you?

A slight thread jack here but ... While walking in Albuquerque this morning, I observed a Trumper in his pickup, cruising north on Carlisle Boulevard, flying big Fark Biden and black/white Blue Stripe US flags on the sides.

I see even in New Mexico that Trumpers lie through their teeth about supporting the police. Their 1/6 US Capitol terrorist attack demonstrated that clearly enough.

/Thread jack closed.
