Well, yes. The tournament started on Tuesday, so if you're not going to play, this week would probably be the week to announce it.  I'm not a sports medicine professional, but as a 40-something still active in sports, I'm going to guess that her injury is due to being a 40-something still active in sports.

Good to see they granted her an exception since she didn't qualify on her own current merits. I'm sure whoever missed the cut because of it is very understanding.

Hey man retire and become a brand like your sister.

make sure you marry a billionaire first though, they're the only people who would put up with that shiat.

My understanding is that because she withdrew early enough, another player who just missed qualifying (a "lucky loser") will be able to take her place in the draw.

That works be the obvious conclusion for most. For others though they will try to make it about something else. I'm not really sure why they have to say anything at all.

Venus just doesn't seem to have the ego her sister has. Or a couple of the big time men...

The local courts are far busier than they were prior to the world going to hell. I'm sure it is a byproduct of not being able to play for a good while and it won't last but I love to see it, we actually had to wait for one to open up a few nights ago and that hasn't happened in years.

I'm not sure how much of a bump it'd be these days but Venus Williams would surely be a bigger draw for attendance and TV (assuming her match would be televised) than a generic tennis player.

A cursory search couldn't come up with the type of exemption, be it host or sponsor, but money has to come from somewhere so while it sucks for whoever otherwise would have gotten that slot I've got no real issue with it. Success creates prestige and the special privileges which come with it, it is what it is.
