Looks like it's been toned down quite a bit.

Either way, I'm in.

This. SR was GTA if it subsisted on nothing but acid and MDMA.

This is veering closer to a Watch Dogs sequel.

To an extent, but the level of 4 and Gat out of Hell was unsustainable.  The only other thing they could have gone with was the hinted-at time travel, and what would that really have added to the series?  Toning it down to, say, the Saint's Row 2 level would still put it way crazier than the vast majority of things out there, and providing some semblance of normalcy means your own over-the-top craziness stands out better.

If it's on Epic they should be paying me.

I get the comparison to GTA but honestly - when did people drive cars on roofs in GTA or fire Gatling styled mini guns out of food trucks.

/so down for this

Literally everyone that's played GTA V in the past 8 years...

Saints Row succeeded because GTA was getting too serious. Their motto was "We'll let you do everything in a sandbox that Rockstar wouldn't let you do".

Then V comes out and suddenly GTA is fun and doesn't take itself seriously. Suddenly all SR has is remasters because they were beat.

Don't get me wrong, I'll probably play this, but toning this series down now is not the best move in my opinion.

Saints Row 2 was better than 3

4 might as well have not been a Saints Row game at all. It was, however, an excellent sequel to Crackdown, whose actual sequel sucked big time

I'm not sure. On one hand, I really enjoyed the superhero antics of 4 and Gat, but they almost stopped being Saints Row at that point. I would like to see them keep that up but use the Agents of Mayhem spinoff to head that direction.

With the main franchise, give us closer to 2 and 3.  Keep it a little more grounded, while still being wacky and fun.

3 was the wackiest. IIRC, 4 was just a reskinned 3 with evil aliens! It was like Red Dead's Undead Nightmare except they marketed it as a full new game. The city was still exactly the same.

I liked 4, but it felt like a copout just using the exact same city and adding a few new baddies and some syfy guns.

I'd love something in the same vein as 3. That felt more like I was checking out a sequel to Watch Dogs, and the kooky emoji helmet didn't help.

You and I must have played two different versions of the game, because I found the humor level to be barely changed.

You actually nailed my biggest complaint with 4.  With the addition of superpowers, gliding, flying, running faster than literally any of the vehicles in the game, it made Steelport feel very small.  You could literally run from one end of town to the other in under 60 seconds.

I still like that Prototype/Hulk Ultimate Destruction type game, but like I said, make that the Agents Franchise.  Then return Saints Row more to its roots.

Agreed on all points.  Everybody remembers the penthouse assault in 3, and sure enough, it was a fantastic mission, but too much the game was weird and over-the-top for the sake of being weird and over-the-top.  You attack a military base and steal the controls for a goddamn missile killsat in the second mission, and the game never dials it down from there.  Once you got access to VTOLs (and the VTOL bike especially), there was no reason to ever use anything else.  You were in a Japanese-style game show about murder for no apparent reason, the main antagonist was a luchador, you took a complete break from the main plot to fight zombies because Mayor Burt Reynolds asked you too...  I liked the game a lot despite the randomness, but it needed to be more grounded than it was.

I can agree with that. They basically said "Hey, what if we made cheat codes just a part of the regular game?" And while fun for a bit, you can literally make yourself more powerful than Superman.

I think they went too far into wackiness.  I liked SR2 - comedic but not  "LOL SO RANDOM" with guns.

Only 3 and 4 were like that. SR1 was just what if we beat Rockstar at their own game as GTA4 was fine but it took itself more serious than the prior games.

SR2 was sillier but added a lot to the base game that it great.

SR3 removed a lot of content and went hyper ridiculous with dildo bats and farts in jars and was like look at how wacky we are

SR4 was the what if Crackdown had a good sequel with dirty jokes in it.

Then they actually tried to make a Crackdown like game with dirty jokes in it with Agents of Mayhem and it was mediocre.

I'm hoping for a more SR2 type experience. Hell I'd just buy a remake of that since it runs like crap on backwards compatibility.

SR2 was my introduction to the series and I think it's my favorite still.  Best balance between the action and absurdity and I've played through start to finish several times.  I liked 3 and played through it a number of times as well.  4 I've only played once.  I went back for SR 1 eventually and I like it as well, but I dig me some Keith David.  I tempered my expectations because I knew it'd be regressing on gameplay, but it was a bit clunky.

So yeah, I'll be looking at this one because if they've dialed it back to an SR2 balance of funny and action, I'll be down for it.

I remember buying SR3 and being so mad at the changes and Gat getting killed in the first 20 minutes that I immediately turned it off and refused to play it for a few years. Looking back it was stupid how mad I was about it lol. Eventually I picked up SR3 and played it and enjoyed it for what it was. Same for 4! But I'd still rather have a more traditional SR2 sequel/experience.

'Aints Row 5, you play as a rookie member of the New Orleans Saints who has to sneak into other team's facilities to steal playbooks and earn hit bounties.  The end game involves Roger Goodell, a dildo ban, non-specific banned substances, and the walking black hole that is Joe Buck.

While true mechanically, it still had that tongue in cheek fun to it.

Yeah, they kind of wrote and designed themselves into a corner. There was nowhere else to go after SR4. Taking it to Hell and adding magic in the Gat spinoff was a solid attempt, but it turned out not to work so well in actual execution.

I always assumed if we got another one it would either be a prequel or a reboot. There just wasn't anywhere else for them to go.

ElwoodCuse: Saints Row 2 was better than 3

I wish I could get it to play on my computer.  Even with the mods, it either doesn't like my system or I'm mucking up the installs.

I hear they're reworking the PC port of Saints Row 2 to actually farking work.  Not a remaster, a patch.  It's only a two man team, so god knows when they'll get it done.  Still, when it's out, I'll be happy to finally check out the game and see what all the praise is about.

Coincidentally, I just started a replay of SR3.  I was doing one of SR4, but realized I just don't enjoy it as much as SR3.  I may follow up with SR2, but I'll have to decide if I want to put up with the shiattiness of that port again.

The thing I hated most about SR4 is too many missions were really just frameworks that had you do different territory activities.  SR3 had some framework missions to introduce the activities, but then you were left to do them at your leisure.  SR4 felt like they were trying to force you to do the activities.  Hopefully, this remake will avoid that route and go for actual story missions.

Also, would it kill them to go back and patch the engine on SR3/SR4 so it doesn't crash constantly when running on more than two cores?  The weirdest thing about it is I'd previously played both games on this system before without that issue, so I don't know why suddenly I have to forcefully limit it to two cores to play without it crashing roughly every hour, but judging from Google, I'm not alone in this.

As for tone, I'm hoping this remake will balance somewhere between SR2 and SR3.  SR2 was an excellent mix of serious and humor, but a little extra SR3 wackiness wouldn't go awry.  But mostly, I just want story missions to actually be story missions and just not another list of minigames to play.
