I want a gritty reboot of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Where the magic car is an alcoholic because it was the same Beetle that Dahmer drove around in, and he decides to avenge those women.

I confused "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" with "Herbie the Love Bug". Mea culpa.

Given that Dahmer neither drove a Beetle nor killed women, his victims were exclusively male, that is going to be one really short movie.

I'm a loud complainer about Disney's creative bankruptcy and cannibalism, but this is one of the few times I could get behind a remake.  It's been an absurdly long time, visual effects have leapfrogged in that time, you get a decent cast and script and you have a solid one on your hands.

Yeah, but he'd fit the "okay, who would be a great younger version of James Mason?" category.

That sounds like my reimagining of the classic Stephen King's, Christine, except in my movie script it is a mini SUV named Karen.  Don't worry, it is written with enough diversity in its victims to please everyone.

Hollywood is very likely to cast Idris Elba as the lead in a Hitler biopic, think they will let something like factual accuracy get in the way of making money?

The two giant red flags that prevent me from getting excited about this are:

1. David Fincher was trying to get this project off the ground for many years and couldn't. The only time I can remember a film that straight-up didn't want to be made actually being good was Fury Road.

2. Trends in adventure film production lead me to believe that this movie will feature hardly any real sea, nature, stunts, boats, sunlight or animals. Just a bunch of digital gobbledegook, things that hold no accelerant inexplicably exploding into flames almost certainly at least one villain who is a zombie-by-any-other-name.

Basically, I would be more excited to see a 35 thousand dollar Leagues movie from a hungry young filmmaker than a 250 million dollar Leagues movie that's been hammered into shape by a marketing committee for twenty years.

That all being said: I hope I am wrong and they make it and it's awesome.

I'm going to disagree.

The original film is nearly perfect.  Certainly, it's a classic.  Any attempted remake is going to pale in comparison.

It's like remaking Moby Dick.  It's been done several times since the 1956 version, with excellent actors and much better special effects, but they've all somehow failed in comparison to the John Huston version.

Plus, you know Disney will have to wokeify it. Make Professor Aronnax a woman of color, for example.  Or Nemo.  Which would be half-right, as Nemo is of East Indian extraction (revealed in the novel's sequel, "The Mysterious Island").

Plus, it's been done at least 3 times since then, at least one with Michael Caine as Nemo, and the all pale compared to the 1954 film.

2021-08-25 10:21:30 AM
Actually, not a terrible idea. Jules Verne actually wrote two books featuring Captain Nemo and the second one, The Mysterious Island, does go into Nemo's background at the end and could be used as the source for the movie. I've heard of worse prequel ideas.

I'm down for this.

I remember across from this ride at Magic Kingdom the first time I went in 93-94-ish there was one of those click in cable almost zip line, almost bungie jumping rides. You could see all the stuff that was in the water running the ride.

It made me want to brave the line and actually ride it.

Jon Hamm did a passable version on SNL in "Vincent Price's Halloween Party", but I'm thinking he's too old now.

If it goes to film. Nemo will be Harish Patel as Nemo was an Indian prince...and Patel has already got the contract and face recognition from his previous Marvel/Disney films.
Disney is no slouch about realizing it's foreign markets like India and China are going to the biggest cash cow  ever.

I don't think it's a remake. From the buzz I've heard it's a prequel, with the origin story only hinted at in the Vern Books.
Nemo is a very wealthy Indian prince in exile, sets about freeing slaves who help build the Nautilus on his secret underwater base on a 'mysterious island' with a volcano.

I just finished listening to those again. They have some public domain audio versions. And a pro narrated version is free with Amazon Prime.
If you ever suffer from insomnia Pod up 20,000 leagues under the seas. Large lengthy bits of that are devoted to OCD details about navigation and classification of fish.

For those missing the 20,000 leagues ride, pay a visit to Tokyo DisneySea.   They have an entire land themed with Jules Vern and a full size natilus mockup sitting inside a volcano.  It's the centerpiece of the park.

Tokyo DisneySea is the only franchised Disney park operated by another entity.   It's pretty unique.

There is a certain amount of iconic nostalgia value in the classic version but in my opinion it hasn't held up very well.  The addition of Esmerelda as a sidekick / comic relief character is tedious and silly.  But given Disney's aesthetic sensibilities at the time it is par for the course.  But I made the mistake of reading the amazing book first before watching the film, so it was bound to be a bit of a let down.   James Mason stole the show though, he was fantastic.   And the then-groundbreaking effects are a marvel to watch.

The Mysterious Island unabridged version is still my favorite novel from Verne.   They did reveal more about Nemo's past at the end and hopefully that will be taken into account in the new series.  If they can produce a quality series like the Mandalorian this should hopefully be good.  Fingers crossed.  Having a different director for each episode as they did with the Mandalorian would be great as well for creative variety.

It refers to the lateral movement, not depth. Like "I walked 2 miles today".
The Title is "20,000 Leagues under the SEAS" plural. (Atlantic, Pacific..Indian..etc.)
Some publications drop the plural as did the Disney film.
