Rope is a great choice. Otherwise their big nuts could get caught in the slats

Funny, was going to post the same thing.  We just moved outside of Longview last winter - we were in the park feeding peanuts to the squirrels this afternoon.

At one point I liked squirrels then everything changed when they decided that the eaves of my house was their home.  They would scamper about all night seriously messing up my sleeping.  My thinking was "Fine.  I will evict them and hire a carpenter to repair what they gnawed through."  That was not a cheap endeavor.  The little horrible things gnawed through the new wood.  In the end I had to install a steel plate over their entrance.  Gnaw through that you assholes!  Now I live in a brick house.

I have a big pine tree under which my hot tub sits. Big grey squirrel is always eating pine nuts and tears up green pine cones to get them, and depending where he's eating, rains down cone fragments on my head. Sometimes it drops the cone. Green pine cones weigh a pound or three and each segment has a nice pointy end on it. They break things when they fall from height, skulls included. Thats why i keep 2 umbrellas open over the tub full time...

Great, now when are they going to build something so pedestrians can safely cross busy roads?

Here in Norfolk in the UK we have bat bridges. When they build the North Norwich Distributor Road they took out hedgerows that bats used to navigate. These bridges are supposed to duplicate the sonar signature so the bats don't get lost. Unfortunately recent studies have shown them to be a complete waste of money. Bats aren't that stupid. They still follow the old hedgerow routes, even if there is a chunk missing. There is no difference in use between those with bat bridges are those without.

We have the same problem in a lot of Ireland ( they aren't in the West of Ireland yet, as they haven't managed to cross the river Shannon)  but their numbers are falling now due to the resurgence of pinemartens, who find them tasty. Thankfully the red squirrels hang out higher up in trees, so they don't get eaten

We already know that some of the rodents are going to make it long after we've wiped ourselves out. There's no reason to help them.

My town (Longview WA) is semi-famous for our squirrel obsession. We have an annual festival and several fully engineered squirrel bridges, each representing a different architectural style of bridge. Not to mention live camera feeds from many of our bridges to give a squirrel's-eye view.

When I had a house in suburbia there were squirrels everywhere.  I frequently saw them using power lines (phone?  cable?) to cross the busier streets.
