Jane Goodall was incredibly careful around gorillas, which is why she wasn't torn limb from limb.

Whereas antimaskxxers are the equivalent of running into a group of gorillas, screaming and baring your fangs, all while you're covered in blueberries.

It's interesting how they (and there are many like this I know) *always* believe that anyone wearing a mask is "scared".  They can't reconcile that people are doing it to protect the community and/or other people.  Right-wing media told them masks were a liberal thing, the virus is way less of a big deal than it's being made out to be so anyone wearing a mask is either being forced or is a "liberal" - and "liberals" are worse people than them so there's *no* way they could be wearing masks to help others.  It's out of fear or to make a statement.

"I've heard many a tirade from Frank about "handouts" and the welfare state, but he is also generous in his way. He's flown out from Michigan at the drop of a hat to help distribute food to hurricane victims, or to stack sandbags against an impending flood. He dismisses the risks of a coronavirus infection, but he's also donated thousands of dollars to small restaurants ailing under lockdown.

...

This has become, for us, a familiar impasse. He tends to distinguish between those worthy and unworthy of concern. I worry about what falls into the crevices of such divides."

This has been my experience as well. I've known quite a few conservatives/libertarians/evangelicals who were generous with time and money, particularly for one-off aid trips, but only up to the point where they control the choice of whether or not to help and (to a degree) who gets help. This is why they'll usually laugh at you if you tell them they don't believe in charity or helping people or whatever, but as soon as the government is used as a vehicle for aid and they lose both veto power and the feeling that they (or their organization) is moral for choosing to help, then they're all about the "freedom" to not have to pay for moochers.

Man I'd like to say the same but I can't even come close. My family on both my mom and dad side are conservative and wouldn't give a dime to somebody if they were getting 9 cents back in change. Despite the fact of course that many of them are receiving a subsidized life either directly or indirectly from the government .

Over drinks one evening, I asked a bartender for a drink without a straw, explaining I was concerned about disposable plastic. "I love plastic," Frank responded with a mischievous smile.

For what possible reason would an adult need or want a straw?

It's projection. Whenever you hear someone screaming about how you are living in fear, they are pants-sh*tting terrified of everything.
Kinda like if you hear someone say they are a "good Christian" you stay away from them, because there's a really good chance they are morally the most farked person you will ever meet.

Frank seems familiar to me:

This has become, for us, a familiar impasse. He tends to distinguish between those worthy and unworthy of concern.

I've met a thousand guys like this tool. They think they did it all themselves, that nobody ever helped them, certainly not that ebil big gubbermint. Yet the people keeping things safe for morons like him to greedily take, take, and take more, he derides. them all. He's also harping on helping those he considers unworthy. All of it based on political ideology, mind you. He won't care that a farmer sucks more money from that ebil big gubbermint teat than dozens of other people. That we spend tons of money propping up failing businesses, ones that were failing before the pandemic, because those poor farmers have it so rough.

People like Frank go go f**k off. After f**king off, they can continue to f**k off until they realize that they don't get to decide who is "worthy" because otherwise I'm coming next, and I'll guess I personally put more money into the tax coffers in a year than he has in ten. He doesn't want me deciding who gets access to my tax money, because it sure as shiat isn't going to be the lazy rural people.

You get one at a bar so you can stir the gin and tonic that the bartender slapped together.
