Gorbachev is still alive? What does he do with his days, hang out with Kissinger?

He's right you know. I'm getting really sick of the sniveling media shiatting their pants over this, especially after they sucked Trump's ass for 4 years.

Our whole economy is based on scams and that is all Iraq and Afghanistan were. There were the wealthy swapping lives for money.

It was a 20 year success. In order for Biden and trump to both agree to pull out now means the profit involved was low now and the wealthy have fresher fish to fry.

Mail Order American Husband: He's still alive?

Gorbachev was young. He was only born in 1930 or thereabouts, he was just a kid compared to Ronald the Venerable.

He's old now, but he's not ancient.

Hilarious. He spoke at my University in 2006. Basically said we need to do something about global terrorism but didn't offer concrete examples. Was in favor of Iraq invasion, don't remember him addressing Afghanistan. We went for the sheer novelty of seeing Gorbachev but I remember coming away from the speech underwhelmed because of his lack of an answer to his own speech topic.

Love Gorbachev. He was really good in that TV show, Chernobyl. Totally believable as a late 80s Russian leader. Has he been in anything else?

It's gotten to be a little much. It was going to be a cluaterf*ck no matter when it was done, Biden just took it on because he's an adult

And he accepted responsibility for the results. Hmm, I seem to recall a recent leader who didn't like taking responsibility... I'm drawing a blank

The liberal media is really piling on huh? It's pretty pathetic. Even just looking at the google news page its all articles about how he somehow messed up this unwinnable situation. Nothing about Trumps "peace deal" with the Taliban. Nothing about how Jared was supposed to solve middle east conflict. Didn't see anything about multiple governors trying to kill their citizens, or Matt Gaetz raping kids, and hell, even the attempted coup is almost completely down the memory hole.

It's true we've killed many Taliban radicals in Afghanistan. Yet in fact, Taliban radicals remain plentiful. This has given rise to the belief that the Taliban just spring out of holes in the ground.

Which is of course ridiculous. (It's the beards that allow them to regenerate.)

Americans have never seen a tax cut for billionaires they didn't like, and they're perfectly happy having the most expensive healthcare on the planet, with sub-par outcomes.

In that context, some billionaires "scamming" the American people while propping up a government with a country's best hope for human rights advancements is small potatoes.

Gorby is right though. He lived through Russia's Vietnam. I remember hearing about it on the radio, the morning after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan to prop up a tottering communist regime.  It was wild stuff at the time.

NATO body count  :
51 000 talibans
2000 al-qaeda
2400 ISIS

65 000 afghan soldiers killed by talibans
3562 nato soldiers
3900 mercenaries

47 000 civilians dead mostly by talibans forces.

Even if you count all the dead from all sides, more people got murdered in the US than in Afghanistan during that time.

Obama not living up to his intent was, I think, an acknowledgment of the devastation that US troops leaving would bring to that country. Biden choosing to pull out is an acknowledgment that an additional 12 years didn't change that. Neither option is good.

If you think extremests haven't attacked Russia, there are casualties of some theaters and train stations that most likely would like words with you if they weren't dead.

According to Brown University it's 71k, which still seems wildly low.  And don't forget about all the unexplored ordinance that will keep ticking that number up for generations, with each news story about a kid playing soccer getting killed by an unexplored NATO bomb reinforcing the nation's hatred of us.

Something about owning the mess one made after invading the country.  Yeah, it was a weak excuse even then.
