Hey, subby, we just ended one 20 ye middle east war. Why don't you give it a couple days or weeks before you go starting another?

Shut up, Bolton.

Let's try a humanitarian effort to help the people of Iran instead of throwing the military at another government considered a problem by our own government.

I'm not worried.  Mike Pompeo has architected a foolproof plan to force them back to the negotiating table.  That guy is a genius!

It has to.  Who knows when the next Trump is elected POTUS.  The threat of nukes is the only keeping Iran safe.

There should be.  But I don't see any reason why they'd agree to one again.

Eh, I find the bomb grade stuff a little too potent these days.
Stick with the ditch uranium to keep up with your day.

Thank goodness, as soon as they get a bomb we won't be on the hook to invade them.

2021-08-17 8:55:27 AM
If you are a nation, it's a simple choice. Working nuclear weapons means you won't be invaded if one of the big guys gets annoyed at you (and note, "having too much oil" annoys the fark out of the big guys.)

Get nukes, and America/Russia can't do shiat about you having that much oil.

...didn't we have some sort of agreement with them, one that could be verified by independent groups?  I'm certain there was something in place that was stopping this at one point and it was no longer an issue.

Whatever happened to that?

"President Joe Biden has said he is open to rejoining the pact, but that Iran needs to return to its restrictions, while Iran has insisted that the U.S. must drop all sanctions."

We're back to posturing -- Iran wants the treaty, again -- but they've been treated shabbily, and have good reason to try to extract as much as they can in a rapprochement scenario.

You mean, the $1.5b that was part of the treaty that was verifiable by independent groups to show that they weren't enriching for weapons grade?

....wonder why those independent groups aren't doing that any more.

Well, the USA and NATO aren't able to keep ISIS ans the Taliban from conquering the Middle East, and China and Russia are careless about Persian health and welfare. They need a local deterrent and the nuclear powers have failed the humanitarian and the security missions.

This is what the USA gets for their own choices, under Bush. Their 9-11 hysteria was wrongheaded and irrational, and 20 years of hysterical conservative militarism, Iran is now the adult in the room.

Which sucks. :(

Yeah. All those religious zealots screaming "Death To America" aren't really serious. They're just innocently venting their global-political frustrations.

We have a porous southern border and have just armed a fairly major player in this timeline's version of the Hunger Games. Anyone who believes Israel is the only target just isn't paying attention and dirty bombs don't need a rocket-propelled delivery system. Just a faithful disciple from a group of people who love to die for their religious beliefs.

When someone repeatedly tells you who they are, believe them.

In a way, if we're still talking about Iran, the "Death To America" crowd members weren't all serious about America.  They were, however, very serious about not being punished for not being zealous enough for the local leaders.

Iran's theocracy is not a representative democracy that is there by the will of the Iranian people.  Any vestiges of that ship sailed long ago, and as the repeated brutal crackdowns have demonstrated, the Iranian regime is simply now the warden of the massive Iranian jail for all of its residents.

In Iran, 'I'll skin you' (Poostet-e mikonim) is a mild thing that parents say to their kids, maybe if they didn't do their homework. "Death to___" is similar, they aren't calling for the bodies to be piled high as much as the ideals in dispute, etc...

R/UNEXPECTEDLYCORRECT

In a report issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna to member nations, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that his inspectors had confirmed on Saturday that Iran had now produced 200 grams of uranium metal enriched up to 20%.

200 grams of 20% enriched U235? To put this into perspective, to make a 10-12-ish kiloton nuclear weapon with 20% enriched uranium, you'd need about 250kg of U235 (vs about 20kg of u235 enriched to 80%).

Uranium enrichment is also a game of diminishing returns. It gets harder and harder to separate U235 from U238, and U235 only makes up .7 percent of uranium ore. The number of centrifuge stages needed to get to 80% enrichment is an order of magnitude higher than what you need for 20%. Iran has been working at enrichment for decades now. If all they have to show for it is 200 grams, I wouldn't worry too much.

harleyquinnical: Let's try a humanitarian effort to help the people of Iran instead of throwing the military at another government considered a problem by our own government.

Help them with what exactly?

How about just coming back to the deal that Trump unilaterally broke, ensure that Iran stops enriching Uranium, and drop the sanctions in return.

And please don't reply with, "Iran will do it anyway", I said, ensure that Iran stops. Not ask for a promise, literally ensure that they stop, by Iran allowing the EU or similar to monitor it, to their complete satisfaction. (USA kinda seems out of the question, as Iran has no reason to trust USA, nor do they like USA. I am sure the Iranians remember how USA lied about Iraq as well).
