Saw Elvis a year before he died at the International Hotel in Vegas. He was fat. He still put on a great show.

Dude was only 42. 5'8", 260 lbs of dilaudid and meth.
They had another doctor other than Dr Nick because he had apparently OD'ed a couple of times before the last one; they just couldn't get to him in time.

I believe it, but he was inconsistent at that point. You should consider yourself lucky you got a good show - it's like  end-stage GnR Axl Rose putting on a good show - there were more misses than hits.

My mom had a ticket to see Elvis.  My dad, out of fear that she might not come back, took the day off work.  Then, as Elvis started inflating, my dad made a point of laughing and saying, "Look at your sexy Elvis now, he's gotten fat!"  Karma, being what it is, then inflated my dad.

If anybody remembers the Showtime movie 'Elvis Meets Nixon' featuring a far superior performance of Nixon by Bob Gunton than either Sir Anthony Hopkins or Frank Langella could pull off, at the very beginning of the film, they basically tie those two men's fates together, as if they were destined to meet.  The only difference between them, as the ending implies, is that Nixon got to live long enough to rehabilitate his image somewhat.  Elvis died fat, drugged out, and nowhere near the top of his game.

Says who? I've always heard people say the one thing he didn't lose was his voice. He might not have looked the part near the end but he still sounded good.

Sure there's one recording where he laughs his way through a song cuz he had the giggles, but he never pulled an Amy Winehouse as far as I know and got on stage and didn't sing.

Jazz musicians enjoy playing jazz far more than anyone enjoys hearing it.

For every Charlie Parker or Miles Davis, there's a hundred others who jerk themselves on self-indulgent unnecessarily overcomplicated noise.

No schitt.

But his guitarist, Scottie Moore, was a pioneering riff machine. Had to transcribe some of his chord melody solos in music school. That man should continue to be celebrated. Just passed away a few years ago.

True of just about all art.  For example, I'd rather read King than Polchinski.

No subby, The Day The Music Died was February 3rd, 1959.

I'm a bit of an Elvis Nerd. I've been kicked outta Graceland twice, once for asking to see where all the bullet holes were and another time for wearing an unofficial non licensed image of Elvis on the cross being held up by syringes. The back had "elvis's last prescription".
He was a caged animal, especially at the end. No one in his orbit said "no" to him, sorta like how they do with Trump.
The picture of him with Nixon was the most requested photo of all the official White House photos ever.
Elvis collected police badges and really wanted a DEA badge but couldn't get one. He obsessed over it and eventually stayed up for three days scheming on how to get one. He pretty much left his handlers at his house in Bel Aire ( they had all passed out on him) and took a plane to DC to confront Nixon over it. It was the first time he had been by himself since 1956. He used his MasterCard for the only time .
He rents a room at the hotel across the street from the White House and sends Nixon a note requesting a meeting to help him with "the drug problem".
Nixon gets the FBI to track down Elvis's guys in LA to see if the note is legit. There's a mad scramble at Elvis's house to find him, and they realize for the first time that he's gone.
Nixon sends the FBI to the hotel across the street and sure enough Elvis is there. So they drag Elvis  over the the White House and make him wait an hour.
Elvis is pretty trashed and pale; he's been up for three days.
Finally Nixon sees Elvis. They take the pictures, then he asks Elvis what he wants, and Elvis stammers something about helping the government with his patriotic duty to stop the hippies and their drug scene, and says he needs to be "official".
Nixon digs around in his desk and pulls out a DEA badge and tells Elvis to beat it.
The last stop on the Graceland tour is Elvis's trophy room. The last thing you see is his police badge collection, and the last badge is the DEA badge.

Sweet jebus I hate that f'n song. A prick whining about others more successful than him while he's clutching a cross. Probably a more apt metaphor for America than we realize.
