I'm thinking the person most looking forward to this being over was Anno himself.  The response to the first ending damn near broke him.

Look, I haven't actually watched any of Rebuild. I got it for the wife, was waiting for part 4 for a few years now, went to look it up a couple days ago and found part 4 is "3.0+1.01".

Rebuild is good, and looks amazing, but the plot is even crazier than the previous series.

As for the numbering, it's just 1.xx, 2.xx, 3.xx, 3.0+1.0 for the order.

The version numbers are because versions .0 are the theatrical versions and versions .xx have been revised for home video (tweaked animation and such).  The weird numbering of 4 makes sense given the plot, at least as much as anything Eva ever does.

I watched a lot of the episodes on acid when I was a kid and I think its why I'm so weird.

That ending was farkin terrible.

I stopped watching Rebuild -- and caring about the series in its entirety -- when they did the 15 year time jump thing, and the kids are the same age. When Shinji asks about it (because he's been stuck in Unit-01 in Earth orbit the entire time), Asuka just casually brushes it off as "That is the curse of Eva."

Yeah, fark Hideaki Anno. And fark this show.

Ugh
I'm gonna have to borrow a friend's prime log in for it so it can be over.
I liked Rebuild 1 and 2 quite a bit but 3 didn't quite land. The ideas were fun, just felt like the viewer was being rushed but it kinda makes sense given the plot.
Watching Asuka and Fan Service kick mecha ass is fun regardless

We should let Harmony Gold strip out the plot and dialog to redo it all as a new show with the same animation.  Throw in footage from the teenage Motoko Kusanagi fiasco, too.

I tuned out the moment the article said "Time Loop."

Time Travel has become the worst collection of the overused scifi tropes, and "Time Loop" is the worst of those.  It's the mark of a lazy creator out of ideas.  Instead of trying to create something new or try to imaginatively build on what has come before, the creator basically says, "Time Loop! This way I can tell the same story again, but with minor variations, and the fans will still eat it up!"

That's not what happened. Both Asuka and Shinji are no longer really human. Asuka is outright an Angel and the same thing happened to Sinji at the start of the Third Impact. Rei never was human. There is similarly something not right about Mari.

"The Curse of Eva" was Asuka referencing the process where the pilots would lose themselves and possibly be reconstituted in another body. This is why 3.33 starts with everyone asking if this is even Shinji or something that looks like him, and why Asuka references the Lillin and not Humans or People.

The battle music when an Eva is kicking ass never gets old.

As for the plot, I gave up trying to make complete sense of it years ago. I just go with the flow and shrug when I don't get something. A while ago, I read some explanations, and it had to pull from the manga, the series, the movies, and video games just to make complete sense of it all.

One of the Evas can transform into a demonic cat form now.
There was some other daft weirdness in there too, but yeah it's all kinds of silly

The basic, underlying theme is actually pretty simple and is directly referenced in the series, The Hedgehogs Dilemma. After that, it's a bunch of convoluted christian themes used to make it more confusing than it has to be and to seemingly have more depth in the same way that a western story will use buddhist symbolism to evoke a feeling of deep mysticism.

Right. The themes are apparent, and part of the reason I enjoy it.

The plot, on the other hand, is basically someone trying to relay an acid trip they took twenty years ago.

I've only watched up to the "original" ending, so, yep.  He stops being a little whingy git.

I guess.

Maybe I should drop acid and watch the series again.

I think it's still worth seeing once. I agree that it's definitely not for everybody, but I'd still consider it important with the impact it's had on the medium and how much it comes up in discussion or references in other shows.

That's actually one of my biggest complaints, and it's something that happens both in the original series and again in the Rebuild. Shinji does stop being nothing but a whiny character, but it happens suddenly. There's no growth, its just in scenes 1-200 hes an annoying whiny character who does nothing, and when we turn the page to scene 201, he's competent.

The fact that it's incredibly badly written in literally every way that its quality could possibly be measured is kind of what makes it fun, you have to be in "so bad it's good" mode to get any entertainment out of it.  It's like The Room, but a thousand times moreso.

Like... he attempts to use Christian iconography and themes all the time but he's maybe once seen a photo of a church taken by someone who never got closer than a kilometer to a church in their life, and by seen I mean he read a babelfished transcript of someone describing that picture after downing three handles of vodka in rapid succession.  And he genuinely, sincerely thinks he's doing a good job of using these references well, to the point that he straight-up inserts only barely-veiled rants about how no, it is we who just don't understand his towering genius into the mouths of characters, who have to completely break character to deliver them.  This is how sonichu-level farked one extremely minor aspect of Evangelion is, multiply that by every other detail in the series.

Actually, Sonichu is probably the best and most comprehensive reference point for what Evangelion is the big-budget version of.  If you don't know what that is I am genuinely sorry for inflicting upon you the potential future of looking it up on Google and caution you not to do so.  Comparing it to The Room is waaaaay too forgiving, as much as the "Oh, hi Mark" transitions and character gibberish changes without actual development also happen on the regular.

// Probably it's not clear why this is entertaining to some people, so I'll try again in a shorter form: Evangelion is every bad, boring, or shiatty thing stereotyped about '90s anime, intentionally done all at once just to see how farking stupid things can get.  It's a colossal cultural in-joke make immensely funnier by Anno appearing to not be in on it.

Cool Story Sis moment:

I was at the world premiere of Death and Rebirth, and the following Q&A session with Hideaki Anno in the 90s, with an extremely socially awkward friend. He was the first person called on in the Q&A and his question was

"Were you sane when you made this?"

Anno didn't find hte question funny, and promptly ended the Q&A session.

Sigh.

Anyway. That's why I don't really watch Eva. I can't watch it without thinking about how embarassing it was to be there with that guy.

The message is "Go outside and stop asking me what the whole point of Eva is." Also 3.0+1.0 is literally the same message that End of Evangelion had, but with a lot less mean spirited murder, death, and masturbation.

It was both, the talking heads/reused animation was purely budget constraints. The navel gazing absurdity was all Anno though. It's why they didn't animate Shinji killing Kaworu and just kept a still frame of Unit-01 instead for so damn long:

One series was enough for me. Even with a passing knowledge of Kaballah/Sepheroph (no, nor FF...), I understood the ending of the original and it all made as much sense as it was going to. I'm good.

I still haven't been able to get through 3.x yet, though I tried a few times.  My problem is that if I'm in a good mood, there's no way I want to watch anything Eva, and if I'm in a shiatty mood there's no way I want to watch anything Eva, so I wind up trying when I'm in that zone of having enough to drink where my judgement is skewed enough to think "Hey, how about Eva?  And another bourbon?"  Then usually I'm sound asleep by the halfway mark.  Or sooner; all I can remember is "WTF is this?".

I figured on starting with 2.x since I don't really remember much about how that diverged from the series, then working up through the new one, but despite the bourbon I had on-hand, it was too nice outside to be spending hours on that stuff.

Yes.

Minor spoiler, the end fight of 3+1  is like a parody of a parody of a parody of the original Eva series, but it's the "official" ending and actually fits after twenty years.

Also Misato is still best girl.

Is this the one about the giant robots, or the one about the school for special kids where the cliques end up fighting each other?   I think one of them had some kind of aloof cool-kid in it.  You could tell because his hair covered one eye and he always had a hand in his pocket.   And I am recalling the girls always wore garters and really short skirts.  Must have been some sort of uniform requirement.  Probably safety related.

I always forget.
