Probably for the best, don't need any more airborne and destroyed cars

Once they knew it was there it was fine, everyone is just cutting that turn super wide today.

Yes, they know it is there, but going that wide usually isn't helpful to your time, you are usually out there because there are cars inside of you.  There was no need for it and it was a safety risk.  If you want to impose track limits, paint an extra well defined line and put in penalties if your position is improved using the extra track.

it's funny hearing everyone whine they aren't running the oval anymore, yet nobody can recall a great NASCAR race on the oval. hopefully the road course will produce a better race

That one where everybody's tires began self-destructed was interesting.

That had more to do with Goodyear. Other than the cachet of racing at Indy, it's not a very interesting race because it's a very flat track for "stock" cars.

On the other hand it is fun to see these huge, lumbering cars around the road course

These type of cars are not well suited for any type of flat track, oval or road course, so I agree with you on that point. The advantage of these cars on a road course is they stand up better to  beating and banging rubbing in the corners so you're less likely to get your day ended, unlike open wheel racing.

Yeah, I always thought "It's a pretty boring race that we do (only) once a year for the prestige and novelty of racing at Indy."

This changeup seems to be fixing that boredom.

always thought that was Tony George's fault. he kept diamond grinding the track surface back then to try to make it better for racing, but it just lead to massive tire problems at the '05 USGP and the '08 Brickyard 400 from excess wear. Goodyear pretty much could have brought solid rubber wheels that year and there still would have been tire issues

and if Indy wanted a better stock car track, perhaps they should just get rid of one of the corners and go to a triangle shape. works for Pocono :)

LOL, I just came on to Fark to pass some time between all my projects that I had to do before the race today, and now see that the race is on.  So much for installing the new smoke detectors upstairs before the race starts.

Am I the only one that actually checks the race time in advance?

/Not that far in advance, like 10:30 AM ET.
//Would have totally missed it if it had been a Saturday night race.

If you Google "nascar schedule" it will show all the races with start times in your local time zone, handy feature.

Already this is more enjoyable than the average Brickyard 400 so I would say it is a success.

Good clean battle that would continue if we didn't have these artificial "stage" breaks that ruin road course events

The people that buy Busch lite aren't doing it for the quality.

Life is too short to drink light beer, light cider or anything made by Budweiser.  If I want watered down beverages, I'd drink.....WATER!!!!
