So, this is why blue is getting bluer, and the remaining window lickers in red hell will be getting more power in the Senate and state houses.

There's a reason sensible people prefer not to live in red hell. TFA, for instance

Yup. My wife and I are both professors at a red state university, and our long-term goal is to get back on the market and see if we can arrange a spousal hire or something in a blue state. That is, if the academic job market doesn't completely collapse. . . .

I hate to say it but I think you're dreaming in this academic market. Spousal hires are a thing of the past for one thing.

Second thing is the demographic dip coming to colleges in the next five years will shut many colleges and universities down.

Not really, partly because we got our PhDs, and our jobs, during the pandemic, so we haven't had a lot of exposure to people. We're in a blue city though, and you'd think it was San Francisco with all the BLM yard signs. So that's nice.

We've just noticed that what counts as "liberal" even in our city is way too conservative for us. My wife is an Arab immigrant, I grew up in a very diverse blue state, and we met and got our PhDs together in a liberal college town. We're used to faculty gatherings where it's considered appropriate to talk openly about how much you hate Trump. Here there's this total avoidance of politics lest any conservative faculty (yes, they exist) get their panties in a wad. We're very secular, and here even a lot of progressives are fairly religious -so we don't really fit in. There's also this weird culture of relying on the beneficence of millionaires rather than publicly funding education. Half of the halls in our library are named after corporations. And then there's the fact that we're constantly at the mercy of a GQP legislature.

"We're in an age of misinformation, distrust, and quick to be angry, and quick to protest. And we have sort of shifted out of a timeframe of collaboration, understanding and empathy," he added. "I think maybe the pandemic has turned that up somewhat."

Can we stop pretending that there was some mythical golden age when people weren't incompetent apes? It's not like bodysnatchers suddenly replaced people while nobody was looking. People are the same as they have always been and pretending otherwise is a sign of the disturbing implication that you don't realize that other people are as real as you and that they don't simply change their nature as though this was a dream or some poorly written television story. You're not acting nice by pretending this is true, you're acting like a psychopath. Same thing with "they don't teach critical thinking anymore" as though critical thinking was ever, in all of human history, something more than a handful of people were even capable of.

Multi-Faceted.  You need people who understand public health.  You know that the flu vaccine changes every year, right?  You know that half the state is rural counties that may not even have a centralized place to get these things and need someone who can coordinate getting resources out to drive rates?

You know its probably a good thing to have someone in a position who actively monitors developments and begins planning proactively before a disaster occurs?

By all I can see, this lady did her job well and stood up to people in the administration that clearly didn't understand the value in what she does.  You're not going to get an expert in a field for 14 bucks an hour.

Actually, I do have kind of a war story, now that I think about it. During the insurrection I tweeted, perhaps stupidly, on my professional account, calling the insurrectionists "Nazis." A couple weeks later I get a call from my dean asking me to take them down. It was embarrassing to have to receive that phone call when I just started the job, but all of the input we've gotten about it from our colleagues says that my dean probably called in order to leave no record of her blatant breach of academic freedom. They, including my wife's dean, were furious about it. I'm sure that's why I felt secure posting it to begin with.

So yeah, the point of that story is that people here, including "liberal professors," are scared shiatless of pissing off Trumpers -to the point that they would make shady phone calls to intimidate a new and inexperienced faculty member. That wasn't something that ever happened at our alma mater. The profs would read the dean the riot act if they ever found out about something like that.
