IHadMeAVision: I don't care for the dude's writing style at all but I seriously expected him to have a more eclectic taste in music than old white dude standards.

He liked music of his time.  How odd.
Could be that liking music doesn't entail being fanatical about it, or always exploring.  It may be for some people; other people just like a good tune.

Spice Must Flow: I recently read Generation of Swine, and amused by his references to Trump.

I like most of his work. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail was especially good if you familiarize yourself with the time it was written.

For chaos and interesting anecdotes, you can't go wrong with Hell's Angels* or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

*The odder of the two. It involves Thompson and Timothy Leary introducing the Hell's Angels to Acid and Shrooms at one point and how that effected the bikers' drug trade. The Hell's Angels also tried to light Thompson on fire at one point. Anyway, it's a great look at the early days of that biker club/ gang.

He was born in 1937 and died 16 years ago. I don't think Billie Eilish was making the list.

Also, he wasn't a music writer, he was a regular person.

Maybe it's a coincidence but most of the older people in my family had pretty diverse tastes over genres and decades and they weren't musicians or anything.

That said I have had friends with "boomer" parents with extremely narrow musical tastes, so I have seen it before.

Huh. It's almost as if every generation is similar. Teens pick music to annoy their parents and later grow to appreciate their parents' music.

The Terry Gilliam film had a soundtrack representative of Thompson's tastes.

The SFPD decided to very obviously follow around the HA chapter president. Dude rode his bike out to Seacliff. Stopped in front of a house had a smoke.

Rode to a house in the Richmond, stopped, had a smoke

Out to the Sunset . Another house, had a smoke

It was at that point they figured out each of the houses belonged to the parents of very senior SFPD officers.

The HA's didn't have much trouble from the cops after that

Whatyya mean?

"We're your friends," said my attorney. "We're not like the others."
"O Christ," I thought, he's gone around the bend. "No more of that talk," I said sharply. "Or I'll put the leeches on you." He grinned, seeming to understand. Luckily, the noise in the car was so awful - between the wind and the radio and the tape machine - that the kid in the back seat couldn't hear a word we were saying. Or could he?
How long can we maintain? I wondered. How long before one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy?"

Very true. He had, at the least, a superhuman level liver and kidneys.
