I kind of understand that.  I use social media primarily to post photos of my kid, whom I worship like a deity.

Of course, most of those photos are of my kid actively smashing the state and subverting the dominant paradigm, so I get a pass.

If you have "skills" post your tits but caption it with something, "why for club baby seals?"

2 birds one stone.

They are just trying to raise awareness about slacktivism.

90% of social media activism is nothing more than screaming into an echo chamber.

The other 10% is astroturfing.

1) You See, Ya Can't Please Everyone, So Ya Got To Please Yourself: Tell them to STFU and MYOB.

2) Hold This Thread As I Walk Away: My suggestion:

3) I'm Super, Thanks For Asking: Sounds like time to tell them to STFU.

4) Problem, Problem, Problem.  The Problem Is You: People are more willing to take risks when they know there's a safety net to catch them.  It is possible you have been enabling her behavior by being the net, but not definite.  I would say some therapy is in order for all of you.  No one said your help has to be unconditional.

5) You Don't Lose When You Lose Fake Friends: This person is not your friend.  DTMFA.

6) It's Just A Fantasy, It's Not The Real Thing (Stump Prudie): Prudie is stumped on this one?  This one is the letter writer's problem.  Seek therapy so you can GTHOI.

7) Have You Ever Seen A Turtle Get Down?: Send them some resources on proper care they can work with, then tell them to STFU and MYOB.

8) Stand! For The Things You Know Are Right: It's OK to accept the offer so long as you surrender your spot to someone more in need than you.

Your friends suck ass. They sound like toxic cultists who you should cut out from your life. If somebody ever told me "You should do activism on social media!" my reply would be "You should kill yourself!"

Regarding the letter about the daughter, she is a train wreck who will likely die alone.  Maybe she should start tricking, because she's already for the streets.

The only social-media activism I've participated in and found to be consistently beneficial involve local animal rescues. Been able to save a few dogs and raise some money through networking.

Since it's activism on Social Media, shouldn't it be 'smacktivism'?

This.  I wish someone had told me how miserable Facebook would end up making me back in 2003 when I first got on there.

I deleted my account about a year ago and I have absolutely no regrets.

It's never worth it to bother. Anyone who's just a little bit leftier than you will still act like you're a fascist boot licker. And boy o boy, do they looooove that "boot licker" phrase.

/I've put a couple Farkers on ignore for that kind of crap. You can probably guess the one I've farkied "leftist prig."

Did some social media activism, but aside from FARK my only connection with that world for quite a while has been posting photos of neighborhood art on Instagram and technical discussions on a couple of professional sites. Good for my mental health

I don't post anywhere other than Fark. No one looks for me here, no one cares what I say, and it's glorious. (And I have no illusions that if I were posting in public, it would do much, other than annoy various employers.) As far as activism goes? Vote the non-death cult party, and not Kristen Sinema. That's all you need to know.

Correct answer: tell the friends you've joined Fark, and all your social commentary posts are on PolTab.

Bonus: tell them your handle is GorGor...

More like: "I tried to get attention but got the kind I don't like, and because the attention is more important to me than the message I shut up and now I'm getting shiat for that too".

You made your bed, lie in it.

It's funny that all of the guys above making fun of social media don't realize that Fark IS a social media portal and that they ARE contributors in this media forum.

/talk about cognitive dissonance

And to answer the question from the article:
You are great, keep doing good things for this world.
Activism is divided into two parts:
- doing (cleaning up parks/beaches, etc)
- raising awareness and affecting public policy (protests, signs, letters, etc)
Social media definitely falls under the latter and I'd argue that in this day and age it's the best at affecting many people at once and even getting them to become doers themselves, or move people to protest and raise awareness.

I'd argue that the BLM movement isn't what it is today without the support and coordination of people on social media.

/ps, doesn't mean it's for everyone, nor that that everyone will excel in it. It takes all kinds to make the works what it is, so appreciate what people do and don't force them to use tools they aren't comfortable with
