The deputy chief says it's strange that the bolt of lightning hit the truck, considering it was going at least 100 kilometres per hour.

a) In before 'lightning comes from the ground!'

2) Also 100 km/h is insignificant to energy that moves near the speed of light.

iii) What's really strange is figuring out the electrical continuity. Skin effect with the rain water? Why a truck with rubber tires over really moist air?

Damn.  From the pic, must have struck right in front of the steering wheel.  Folks are probably going to be near deaf for a day or two.

FTA: (FD Dep. Chief) David Reith can't believe that lightning struck a truck going 100 kilometres per hour on Highway 1.

Yeah, I'd wait for an investigation on this one.
Best guess I can make is they drove into the path of the charge about the same time it reached the cloud.

/if you're going to poke holes in that guess save the vitriol, I freely admit it's a guess

Yeah, I imagine that the seat upholstery would have suffered some damage when the driver absolutely shiat himself.

Watched a bolt light up a 100 foot pine tree yesterday, it was outlined in the flash and the whole tree lit up orange for a second. Really cool watching it from a half mile away. That particular mountain got well over a hundred strikes yesterday, forest service working six snag fires today and more fun brewing for this afternoon.

Something doesn't add up here.

1. The car was hit while it was driven on the highway.

2. This is the result:

And yet, 3.:
The couple in the vehicle weren't hurt.
"They're totally OK. I mean, other than they were obviously extremely shaken and scared,"

WTF?

uh, they pulled the fark over and started running around in circles screaming while the truck slowly smoldered until the fire really got going?

They were actually farking in the backseat at 100 km/h at the time

I would suspect:

* fire starts in engine as driver hits breaks and pulls over with smoke filling the cabin
* couple exits stopped vehicle
* fire spreads into cabin as they call 911

The car formed a Faraday cage and protected its occupants from lightning. It's odd that the car interior caught fire.  The lightning must have entered the vehicle through a crack in a window or something.

Last of the Crazy People: Why a truck with rubber tires over really moist air?

Tires have carbon-black or other compounds that make them slightly conductive so you don't get a massive spark from the static buildup every time you get out and touch the ground.  Certainly enough of a path for the kind of voltage lightning has.

Some

lightning comes from the ground.  IIRC it might even be most or more than half lightning comes from the ground.  But some of it still comes from the sky.  It all depends on the circumstances.

All I can say is, that's a hell of a lot of collateral damage for a "nobody was hurt" incident.  I guess the fire burned for a while after they fled in terror.

I was told that one of the safest places during a lightning storm was inside a car.

Fauci!!!!!!

Yeah, so, I'd like to reiterate awruk's question above: "WTF"? How does the interior get burned up while the people are unscathed?

My understanding is the Faraday cage doesn't even necessarily protect you if you're touching something metal that connects to the exterior... such as, for example, the steering wheel.

a) The electricity is flowing from the cloud to the ground.  This part of the lightning is not visible.  The plasma forms near the ground from the high heat and travels upward.  This is what is visible.

b) Yes. Airplanes going much faster are hit often.

iii) Tires are not good insulators.  Plus get a high enough voltage and anything becomes a conductor.

That picture is not from the lightning damage.  Afterwards a fire started and that caused the visible damage.
