This is scary already, and putting kids back in school is going to sicken a lot more people.

"A study by Imperial College London found that Covid-19 test positivity among UK children five to 12 years was two- to six-fold higher than for persons 45 and older. As of Wednesday, one in 10 Covid-19 test results for US children five to 11 years are positive, and the week-over-week rise in test positivity is climbing fastest for this age group. Covid-19 test positivity among US children 12-17 (12.3%) is higher than for any other age group. "

I don't know about the UK, but in the US, ages five to twelve cannot be vaccinated as they are not approved. So, yes, this is going to suck. I have no idea what local schools are going to do but I think they should continue doing what they were doing at the end of the last school year.

It's 11 and under. The Pfizer vaccine is currently the only one in the US approved for ages 12-17.

We're hoping they get the 5-11 approval this winter, though.

Schools here are set to re-open for in-person classes only in a few weeks. The District has told all employees they can work at home a maximum of two days a week. Mrs. Nuran's entire workgroup has decided they will not obey that directive because of Delta. They're going to respectfully decline and keep working remotely. So are a couple other ones who work in the Central Administration Building. One of them said "What are they going to do? Fire most of their senior administrative staff?"

I get it, but my kids can't manage another year of online and I pretty sure I can't either.  They're already effectively one year behind academically and socially and another year online might be irrecoverable.  That's if last year is recoverable - with extra tutors it may be. Plus, they're competing which students who were in class all year, even in the same town.

Mom is a school teacher and they've been doing online classes/schooling as much as they are able to with our crappy communications infrastructure. Except for the next week or so  everyone is forced to go back to school ahead of vacations because of administrative red tape at the Dept of education saying "teachers and students HAVE to physically be at school for X amount of days a year because reasons". And in the middle of our own massive surge in cases and deaths while we have little to no access to any real vaccine.

It's mind-boggling and not a little frustrating to say the least.

Okay, well, we're all listening.

Seriously, we're all listening. It's horrible either way; they go to school, get COVID, and a not-insignificant percentage die or suffer lasting damage; or they don't and fall farther and farther behind in their courses.

I'm not seeing a good answer to this one, honestly.

What the hell is wrong with you? Serious question.

Life is a balance. As a society we have to balance the risk of potential harms.

Go look up the COVID death rate for under-12s.  Then look up the studies about the social and educational damage that virtual learning causes for kids. It's not that kids are being pushed to return to school because they're not afraid of COVID. It's happening because of the fear of creating a lost generation, and the observed likelihood of lifelong damage for *everyone* from that, irrespective of the covid that they are likely to fully recover from.

No snark - neither your comment nor your attitude are in bounds.

No. What the hell is wrong with you? You're sending your unvaccinated children into a situation that will almost certainly result in them catching COVID-19. If you believe children don't bring home all sorts of disease, then you're clearly an absent parent and need to be shunned for that.

And the reason you are doing so? Because, and I quote, "but my kids can't manage another year of online and I pretty sure I can't either."

It has nothing to do with safety, it has nothing to do with them, it is completely, 100%, "I am tired of my kids being around."

First, finish reading my entire post.

Then, look at who you are replying to, and who wrote the comment about sending their kids back to school, and realize they are not the same person.

Finally, take a deep breath and ask yourself why you are posting these unreasonable knee jerk reactions, and why you are struggling so badly with reading comprehension.

Shortsighted is worrying about that. They'll be vaccinating kids soon enough. Meanwhile, if the adults who are already qualified would get the vaccine, then there is no one for the kids to catch it from.

But kids who aren't getting educated are farked for the remaining 70 years of their lives, because not that any of them are going to die from the virus. That's a lot longer than the point where covid will finally become background noise in our lives the way cold and flu season is.

44 million people caught the flu in the US during '17-'18 and 61,000 died from it. We didn't shut anything down over that, and that's what covid will be after enough of the holdouts finally get their shots.  Covid is temporary. Losing teachable years is permanent.

Everyone knows that but what that entails is now for parents to stay home to figure out child care services. These services were already expensive and hard to come by. Now they are even more scarce or non-existent due to the risks. Unless employers follow suit, you have a huge problem on your hands. It was fine before because we were all mostly in lockdown so it was expected. The chances we go into total lockdown again are slim. We just announced to my employees WFH at least for the next 2 weeks until the Delta variant flattens out. 95% of our staff is fully vaccinated so the risk of hospitalization, death, or extreme sickness is low, but we cannot risk suddenly half our office or more getting sick and making everyone including our essential staff quarantine at home all at once.
