Neat for those wanting to see it.

I do wonder how many people are checking if they can cancel theater tickets they bought since they can watch it tonight instead at home. I know lots prefer giant screens and booming sound, but time is a big thing and being able to see it sooner counts a lot. Plus Delta is flaring back up. I don't wanna be in crowds now.

I can't imagine many cancellations for getting an early bump of just a 8 hours.  Also, even though the article mentions 3am EST/ 12am PST, I thought these typically got released at midnight eastern.

I'm excited for this Suicide Squad. James Gunn hasn't made a bad film. This is being compared to Slither and Super. That's high praise, and doesn't it just look like they had fun making it! I love Dirty Dozen type movies, and he appears to have been given free license to play in the DC sandbox, so I'm there!

Damn it's got a 95% on RT.

I think that's one of the highest superhero ratings right now (only beat by Into the Spiderverse, Incredibles, and Black Panther). Granted it has 154 ratings right now (for comparison Spiderverse has 391), but that's a good sign.

First Suicide Squad had 26%. Still sounds high.

Yes, Subby, because Disney will underpay, shame and doxx Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, but will be willing to compensate John Cena, Idris Elba, and Peter Capaldi on the fly.

That seems to be the consensus. Gunn's working with around the same budget as Marvel, but none of the shackles. Kinda like Deadpool, but the Studio actually believes in this and didn't cut the budget to ribbons.

I'm essentially spending the price of a movie ticket to get a month of HBO Max for this one movie, so it strangely works out.

Yeah, this is the first DC movie I've looked forward to in a decent amount of time and it's because of James Gunn.  I loved Guardians of the Galaxy, I'm excited to see what he does here.

HBO max has started to offer some movies with the full 4K video and Dolby Atmos sound. I hope this is new enough and qualifies.

The Tomorrow War (on Amazon) was an OK movie but the sound was awesome during the fight scenes.

It's complicated and varies by service.

Apple TV+ will release their new Ted Lasso episodes at midnight Eastern so you can easily watch them Thursday evening in the Pacific time zone. Apple music releases also hit around this time as well.

Disney+ on the other hand usually goes with 12PM Pacific / 3AM Eastern for their new episodes.

HBO Max varies depending on if it is a streaming exclusive or not. They usually go with midnight Pacific for streaming, but anything that airs on HBO television will become available when the episode airs. New movies aired on HBO typically become available at 6PM on Saturday on the West Coast, for example.

Amazon pretty regularly puts their new episodes up early on a pretty regular basis, randomly enough that the release date is generally a suggestion to them.

I believe all of the 2021 theatrical releases are in 4K and Atmos sound. They specifically upgraded the app for 4K and Atmos support when they started the theatrical releases with WW84.

That is cool. Unfortunalety some of the movies that are a couple years old are still just 5.1. I would have liked to watch Kong Skull Island with the Atmos. I can't rember if the Godzilla vs Kong had it. I may not have had the upgraded receiver by then. As long as the newer stuff keeps it up, I will forgo the movies.

Oh yeah, the Suicide Squad is basically an R-rated, more villainous GotG dynamic.  Semi-comedic (mostly through the character dysfunction), out for themselves and doing the right thing reluctantly at best, but still managing to get the job done.  Give it a good heist movie dynamic, an inevitable betrayal/protagonists not being told the whole story, and you've generally got a good Suicide Squad vibe.

The key, as with any good heist movie, is doing the ensemble cast well and getting the most out of their interactions.  If they can pull it off, Suicide Squad is a great way to use villains who straight-up couldn't carry their hero's solo movie.  Nobody would want a Batman movie with Deadshot as the main antagonist, or a Flash movie with Trickster or Captain Boomerang, but as members of the Squad, B- and C-listers work great.

2021-08-05 7:10:31 PM
Okay. WTF?

2021-08-05 7:42:22 PM
The film is technically a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, but is actually more of a reboot in that while some characters return (like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller), there's no actual connective tissue story-wise.

Cool.  The fact that they're going with the explicitly-stated central hook of the comic at least indicates that someone involved in the production actually read at least some of the comics at some point, or at least just looked them up on a wiki or something.

Wait... is the Collider staff not clear on how the Suicide Squad works, somehow?  It's literally in the name, the comic isn't called that because there's a defined core set of heroes who always survive every adventure so they can unvaryingly muster for the next storyline with the same exact set of characters.

// My sixty-something father is maybe tangentially aware that comic books are a thing that even exists at best.  And yet, he 100% comprehended everything you'd ever need to know about SS instantly entirely from the sentence "They made a comic based on the Dirty Dozen but with more leotards and superpowers".  Amusingly he actually could get pretty close to describing individual characters accurately from that one sentence, actually.

How many senses are there for "popcorn flick"?  Seems pretty self-explanatory.  I haven't seen it, and I don't know if I'll bother, but there's a time and place for that, especially if you've got popcorn and a couple of beers.

I'd say it makes a pretty good popcorn flick, and there's enough gimmies for that. Beers and popcorn and brain off = you'll have a pretty relaxed time.

If you want more, I'd **really** stick with the animated DC Suicide Squad. That's got things like cohesion and uh, a...story.....

That's fair.  Assault on Arkham (and even Hell to Pay, to a lesser extent) was a perfect example of how to craft a Suicide Squad narrative.  Introduces the villains you don't already know, sets up the premise, a bit of planning and characterization, heist intro, a couple of plot twists, and they have to pull off the "real" job for a climax.  It was laid out perfectly for what they were doing, that's hard to top.

That's really it in a nutshell. Now before I get drawn and quartered by the Fark Movie Brigade, this is the best DC film I've seen in a long time. Your points are really bang on - and the only way to really see this is to have watched the animated stuff.

So, if you're a fan, then by all means, jump in. If you've got a history with what DC can do through animation, you might be left a bit wanting, which means this is a popcorn flick for some.

Fark used to make fun of this PSA. Now it is this PSA. It's always disappointing to watch a former anarchistic idealist make the shift into post-midlife crisis grumpy conservatism.

We watched it.  It was alright.  A few parts made me laugh but it's no Deadpool.  Idris Elba was fine but he is not a comedic actor.  Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn schtick is getting a little tiresome.  The shark, Ratcatcher 2, and Polka Dot Man were surprisingly delightful.  And apparently James Gunn hates birds.

I thought it was good, not great. It had some genuine laughs but it's not as comedy driven as Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies are (which is fine). I did enjoy the over the top violence... it's probably the most violent superhero movie since "Logan".

I do get the feeling that post credits scene was tacked on late in the process.
