Lame.  Completely vanilla and uninteresting.  Sony are a bunch of chicken shiats.

Meh, I'd have gone for Buzzy Cohen.
Sadly no one called me to ask. 🤷🏻♂

So the person already involved with the show as a producer decided that he had fun and wanted to pick himself?

The guy who most people said was one of the best guest hosts is getting to host?! Outrage!

2021-08-05 12:03:37 AM
really if you think about it, it was probably always going to be him. The vast majority of the other hosts have other shiat going on that would probably preclude them from being the full-time host. Makes sense that the guy who was pretty good at it and already works for the show would be the choice

I thought he did well.

Just hire Sean Connery and be done with it.

2021-08-05 12:20:42 AM
Is this real?

I thought the whole point of the elaborate guest host rollout was to let the public choose a suitable successor from a diverse selection.

2021-08-05 12:21:46 AM
Oh, sorry...I didn't realize he WAS one of the guests.  I thought he was just an exec stepping in.

Levar Burton has been begging for it. I like him alright and I haven't watched any of the shows of any of the guest hosts, but Levar has almost been groveling. Not a good look.

he was as good as anybody else if not better.  not a huge surprise.  my money was on ken.

I like this choice. My number one choice was Ken Jennings, but Richards was a solid 2. As far as the other guest hosts, most weren't there to audition, so it really came down to Richards, Jennings, Buzzy, LeVar and Mayim. LeVar was not good and Mayim was sweet but the giggling and excessive talking got old.

On a side note, the current champion, Matt Amodio, is already a top 10 all time money winner (regular season) and plays a little like James Holzhauer...big bets on Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy. No one is coming close to challenging him. I bet he will be top 4 or 5 by the end of next week.

The only guest host I made a point to watch was Rodgers because I'm a Packers fan.

While I'm guessing this guy, having hosting experience and being around game shows, is probably fine and all, it makes the celebrity hosting thing feel like kind of a charade. "Hey, look, we can draw all kinds of attention to the show! And get to meet all these cool, happening, connected people by dangling this carrot in front of them of possibly becoming the permanent host! But then, we'll just pick the guy who has been on board for a while anyway!"

While no, that's probably not totally how it went, they also could have had internal auditions before bringing the guest hosts on and just went with this guy rather than drawing it out with the guest hosts and presumably reaping the ratings rewards accordingly.

I feel a tad taken, and it feels a bit like they milked Trebek's death a bit accordingly. But I'm cynical enough enough about entertainment, or moreso just enough of a realist, to know that you should always be prepared for what you're ingesting to be snake oil. And hey, when it only happens one time, after you had a great host next to forever, it's not the worst thing in the world if they had a plan to make the succession process feel "special."

I put that in contrast to watching, say, any variation of The Bachelor/ette, where my suspension of disbelief about the show went out the window a long time ago. Twenty-some seasons and not a single contestant has ever had the attitude of, "Yeah, the Bachelor/ette is nice and all, but there's 30-some other really hot young people here, so yeah, I might not get picked and I'm OK with that. I'm just happy to be here. The catering is amazing." Every single season, every single hopeful, every one goes in thinking, "Yes, I am the perfect match!" Even the pursuit of love doesn't blind that many people that badly, and we're supposed to buy in hook, line and sinker? No thanks.

What is a "death knell"?

2021-08-05 3:17:27 AM
I would have gone with Aaron Roger's.  He seemed at ease, was funny, and the most expressive of all the guest hosts.

2021-08-05 3:42:31 AM
My top three were Ken Jennings (genuinely love the show), Savannah Guthrie (great pace, a professional broadcaster), and LeVar Burton (warm presence). This dude barely registered.

Also, Pat Kiernan should have gotten a run.

I liked this guy.  And I liked Katie Couric. I thought LeVar Burton did not do well hosting the show.  I like him as an actor and a person, but he was definitely not at ease hosting the show.

But I thought Gordie was a shoe-in.

2021-08-05 7:10:14 AM
Heh, I said it would likely come down to Mike RIchards choosing himself or Ken months ago and got laughed at.  My guess is Mike offered it to Ken who turned it down, so he chose himself as option 2.

He was a great guest host (and he has experience hosting other game shows, so this ain't his first rodeo).  I'm ok with this.  He'll be a great successor to Alex.

He's also fairly young (and looks younger) so he can host for a long time to come.

I grew up on Reading Rainbow and TNG. I really wanted him to knock it out of the park.

He didn't. He was middle of the pack at best. Stilted delivery, talking over contestants, waiting too long to identify which contestant buzzed in correctly (giving them almost no time to answer), and he would occasionally call answers incorrect that weren't and had to catch himself.

I'm sure he could've grown into the role better with time (he only got one week to host), but Savannah Guthrie, Mayim Bialik, and Richards were better.

They read questions (answers) off a card. WTF are you people talking about?

I wish they'd change the format and limit appearances to 10 days. It's extremely boring watching these super players win for months on end.

Incorrigible Astronaut: I'm sure he could've grown into the role better with time (he only got one week to host), but Savannah Guthrie, Mayim Bialik, and Richards were better.

I also noted they aired him against the frickin olympics, where half the stations were pre-empting or cancelling the airing. They really don't want a non-white male hosting, do they.

Doesn't matter how many people watched him, he just wasn't great at doing it.  He wasn't terrible, but I though Richards was the best that I saw.

That's fine, I'm just annoyed that he was snubbed for Dr. Oz (ffs), that he had to _ask_ to do it, that it took an internet petition to get him on. That this article (among many others) chose to omit naming him at all. It really smells like there's a double-standard at play here.

This dude wasn't bad, but if they were just gonna go with milquetoast white guy, then I would have gone with Ken.  He at least has some quirkiness going for him.

While Burton wasn't great, for someone who evidently wanted the job so bad I thought they could at least give him the 2 week run.

jackandwater: I would have gone with Aaron Roger's.

Grammar tip:   when you want to show possession for someone with an 'S' as the last letter of their name, you have to put the apostrophe at the end, like this:

I would have gone with Aaron Rogers'.

So Variety is in on it too? Just how far do the tentacles of the Jeopardy conspiracy reach?
