However, this offense can't result in any points added to a driver's license, does not allow an officer to search a car, and can not be included in someone's SLED criminal record.

In other words, it's not a fine; it's a fee.

That is really good, except in Florida. Here they drive slow in the left lane and pass in the right. I don't know why, it's just the way it is.

What if I'm having a sandwich while talking on my cell phone and don't realize I'm driving because my kids are acting up and my ice cream is melting?

Police love it because speeders will go faster and generate bigger tickets.

$25 to drive as slow as I want in the left lane? That's cheap entertainment.

I sincerely hope that this is $25 per mile otherwise it will cost more to enforce than they get.

The bipartisan bill fines drivers $25 for driving in the far left lane on the highway unless they are passing another car.

Wonder how this will affect left lane lifers...the folks who drive pedal to the metal forever in the left lane to pass cars miles ahead.

When the Air Force finally kills the A-10 they should be given to various Highway Patrols exclusively for use in enforcing "KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS".

Yupperz, I can't tell you how many times I've seen this Gif on my area's Freeway & Highways in my 45 years of driving w/at least 75% in the Left lane also leaving the turn signal on the whole way that I'm behind them.
Brother it's NEVER long either, funny thing is they never have a Dent or a Scratch on their car neither......!!!!!

I read the headline as "Strafe in the fast lane" and I had visions of the Luftwaffe offering a final solution to the slow driver in the fast lane problem.

Geez guys, I do not know.  Where I live people mostly respect the left lane not as the passing lane, but as the 80-90 MPH lane when traffic permits.  When people want to go faster they choose any lane (including exit ramps) in order to pass.  Now that is not during rush hours, as all lanes are going slow, which is why I avoid driving at those hours.  Also, having extensive experience on the Dan Ryan and Eisenhower Expressways I learned to assume that everyone else is high on meth-amphetamines, without a license, without insurance, driving a stolen car, and carrying a pistol.

Sadly, Hubby is a left-lane Larry. It can't be changed and if he talks on his mobile, he drives even slower. I've seen him putter along at 53 in a 70. Sigh. There are times I wish a CHP would give him at least a good talking to. These days, with everyone armed, I'm afraid some nutter will shoot at us. I wish I could drive again. His whole family are terrible drivers whereas on my side, we had one who certified Drivers Ed. teachers for the State of Illinois.

On Long Island it is common  to find packs of cars passing in and out doing in excess of eighty . I also find that the slow lanes are frequently empty but when these packs of cars weave around they will utilize all lanes so I just try to stay put so they don't involve me in their fast and furious games.

Well, given the text of the law:

(B)    Subsection (A) of this section does not apply:
(1)    when no other vehicle is directly behind the vehicle in the left lane;

Not much unless they are come upon by someone even faster.

a-holes on TV True Crime shows allow the law to search at the drop of a hat. people need to know they have rights. just say No to search: 1. is there any untoward aroma coming from vehicle? no=good 2. has anyone in the vehicles made untoward movements? no=good. 3. most important; has Law Enforcement stated Probable Cause? no= very good. no search permission.

Good. Stupid selfish bastards blocking the left lane are a menace.

FirstDennis: Self driving cars will fix this.

Self driving cars will be hell... they will all drive like uninsured grammas, never going anywhere near the speed limit, changing lanes extremely slowly, stopping in the middle of traffic because a walmart bag floated out in front of them.

You'll be longing for the days when all you had to deal with was a few slowpokes in the hammer lane.

You're right.
It's wrong. And dangerous.
But we become more self absorbed as each generation progresses.

Are we not teaching community responsibility, or are people choosing to disregard it...?

Driving in France a couple of years ago taught to stay in the far right lane no matter how many lanes the freeway has. Otherwise, you will piss off some German who will be honking his horn and flashing his lights as he flies by in his Porsche. Merde!

2021-08-05 8:24:58 AM
Won't do anything about people who hog the left lane going 65.03 mph while "passing" a vehicle going 65.02 mph.

Then it gets hairy as Triple Ls don't like to be forced out of the left lane.  First they race then the one behind passes on the right and swings back in front.  They continue this way until both disappear in a cloud of brake lights and douche.

So long as 18 wheelers, tractor trailers, and commercial trucks are absolutely banned from all but the far right lane, upon penalty of having the load confiscated and their license revoked, I'll consider it progress.

Only once or twice, but then I'm white.  A good friend of mine who's half Turkish and has a muslim-sounding name, however, has had his car searched more times than either of us could count.  Once he was driving back from a trip out to New Mexico and had brought his bike along to hit some trails while he was out there.  While passing through Texas he got pulled over and had his car searched, and the cop actually let the air out of the tires of his bike so he could check and make sure there weren't any drugs hidden in them.  And it's not like he was driving a suspicious car or anything, he had a friggin Volkswagen Jetta at the time.

If they want to search your car they will make up an excuse to do it or otherwise intimidate you into consenting.  And yeah, any charges that stem from such a search could be thrown out by challenging the legitimacy of the search, but that requires a lawyer and not everyone can afford that.  And unless you're very, very lucky whatever public defender you get isn't going to get that thrown out, he's just going to negotiate a plea deal.

The problem is there aren't any consequences at all for cops that pull this crap, and in some cases there's actual incentive for them to disregard consent and/or manufacture reasonable suspicion (civil asset forfeiture, anyone?).  The worst thing that can happen is the defendant's lawyer gets the evidence turned up in the search thrown out and the case is dismissed.  There's no consequence to the officer, no incentive to notdo it again.
