I guess I don't remember anyone ever praising the US Army's treatment of buffalo. I had, however, learned about how they were involved with the slaughter, though the blunt reality of "they were doing this so natives would starve" was avoided at the time.

This just in...history is filled with terrible acts by many including armies. Also, what US did to Native Americans was farked up.

Granted this behavior isn't just in ancient military history. Operation Ranch Hand wasn't too kind either and had many of the same goals including starvation. Done by the US Air Force from 1961-71 in Vietnam. If the US military is fighting against non-whites it's a safe bet they're going to do something terrible.

Buffalo Shame

Buffalo Shame

Well, I've been here for a million years
Got a ton or two of flesh and flies round my ears
I've got a name and I can see you don't know
So I guess I'd better tell you; I'm the buffalo

Don't smoke no reefer, don't take no pills
Got a head like a rock and a bottom like a hill
Don't think about much that bears translating.
Except buffalo love and ruminating

Buffalo wanting some answers
Buffalo want you explain
Buffalo seek explanation
Don't know nothing; it's a buffalo shame

Just sit around trying to take buffalo feed
Looked up, swallowed down, started to bleed
Men with metal sticks make an awful lot of noise
Don't care what it is, but dear it destroys

Buffalo falling in tens of thousands
Buffalo falling like rain
Buffalo falling and lowing and dying
Buffalo ending; it's a buffalo shame

Don't know what for they want to shoot us down
We stay out of trouble; stay out of town
Don't be chasing their women, don't rob their trains
Just stand around grazing on the Western Plains

Some men do it because they want to, seeking for fortune and fame
Other men do it because they're told to
Rot their eyes; still a buffalo shame

sort of like what happened to the indiginous populations of people before europeans brought small pox over.

for example, after cortez sacked Tenochtitlan and subjugated the native americans in the area which is now mexico north of oaxaca to the sonoran desert, their populations dropped by 90% in many areas (generally due to disease and mismanagement, not deliberate genocide, altho they certainly did kill a lot of people), and the population of mexico didnt return to its pre-cortez level until the 1960s.

for the indiginous tribes in what became the US the situation was similar; initial explorers in the 1600s found tons of settlements up and down the rivers all over, and most of them had gone by the time european settlers really started pushing into the N. American interior towards the middle of the 1700s... by the 1800s the natives remaining didnt have a snowball's chance. There were more european settlers arriving every year by boat than were natives even left alive in many regions.

small pox... was a thing. Did more to conquer the americas than anything.

It has been estimated that there were 60-100 million bison in North America in 1800.

The fertile soil of the Great Plains is the result of millions of years of prairie plants evolving deep root systems in order to survive periodic pruning by herds of bison. Those bison subsequently crapped out the plants they ate, and then the herd would pulverize the manure and work it into the dirt with their sharp hooves, thereby sequestering the carbon.

Then we killed all the bison, fenced the open range, and replaced the bison with cattle, and replaced the prairie plants with shallow rooted crops.

Within a century the richest topsoil on the planet was reduced to grit blowing in the wind during the Dustbowl years of the Great Depression.

Now, we burn diesel to spread synthetic fertilizer on crops which we feed the 80 million cattle currently in the U.S,

We replaced a system that maintained a population of approximately 80 bovines for millions of years while enriching the soil and removing CO2 from the atmosphere, all without any human intervention, with a system that maintains the same number of bovines while simultaneously polluting the air and degrading the soil.

yep same thing.

europeans living for centuries in near squalor with their livestock gave them exposure, and partial immunity, to all sorts of diseases that jumped from pigs sheep goats cows to europeans. small pox killed a lot of europeans too when i jumped from pigs over to humans, but not all of them, and after a while europeans got partial immunity from it.

but, this disease then is introduced to the new world, or pacific islanders, or other populations which didnt have exposure to these sorts of diseases, and they get wiped the hell out.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is a bunch of fascist idiots. Blood alcohol level is a terrible measure of impairment. Their laws are draconian and serve no purpose other than to have something to take their minds of the fact their idiot son wrapped his car around a tree. The law SHOULD promote treatment and sobriety over lengthy prison sentences. Of course failure to remain sober SHOULD be punished appropriately.

But MAD is great. Don't shoot or we all die.

A book I'd recommend is Empire Of The Summer Moonby S.C. Gwynne. It's about the Comanche and the fights between them and white settlers and the US Army. It talks a fair bit about the slaughter of buffalo to starve the Comanche and other tribes. Very good book.

If it's not racism, it's probably sexism. And/or homophobia.
