Holy shiat, we ate there! Probably 3 years ago, wife and I went for a weekend trip to San Antonio. When we were leaving, we said we should get some food. We saw the Shoney's and both said "Wow, those are still open?!" Decided to go there because why not? Wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. Basically it was like a McDowell's to Denny's' McDonalds.

I wish I could eat at a Shoney's. I've never seen one as far as I know, but it looks like my kind of place.

I went into one 16 years ago when I came to ATL for an interview.
I was immediately reminded the US has a severe obesity problem.

We lost our last Shoney's 20 years ago. They went into bankruptcy around Y2000 and have since gone from 1300 locations down to 300.

When I was young and we travelled to the g-parents, we always hit a Shoney's knock off called Sambo's.

Yes, the wall are was as racist as you think.

I've never eaten at a Shoney's. Yet another business that can't cross the Hudson.

My recollection is that they later became Denny's.

I haven't eaten at a Shoney's in years. I used to eat there somewhat regularly, and have even stayed in a Shoney's Inn (the restaurant had converted to a Chinese buffet, which seems to be the fate of many of them).

No, though some locations were sold to Denny's, according to Wikipedia.

I remember when Shoneys came to town.  People said it was great.  It was just another Denny's to me.  It's long gone, but the Denny's is still there.

I kind of miss them. They really went downhill when they lost the Big Boy franchise over racist behavior. It was one of the best breakfast buffets around.

Sambo's turned into Carrow's.

The one time we went to a Shoney's, I was struck with vertigo. So I decided not to eat.

/probably a wise decision.

Never mind. Looks like it turned into Bakers Square.

I've never heard of Shoney's, but there used to be a place here in town called Finnegan's. It was like a Denny's, I guess. When it was announced that it would be closed, the local youth who frequented the joint (all night coffee and such) held an overnight night party of sorts to mourn their loss. A Finnegan's wake, as it were. I didn't attend, but I sure liked their moxie.

Anyway, I miss Howard Johnson's blueberry toast from the griddle.

Sambo's chocolate chip pancakes >>>> Shoney's entire buffet.

I drove through the south last week and saw one in Mississippi. I thought they were long gone. The last time I went to one was probably in the 90s.

/ didn't stop in

Joe USer: At least they'll still have Grandy's

I can't fathom how Grandy's is still open in some places. My grandparents bought it all the time in the 80s and it was gross even back then.

I'm surprised there isn't a toxic fandom outrage over this, considering who frequented Shoneys

I was a waiter at Shoney's when I was in high school. Closing at 3 AM on Friday and Saturday nights was brutal and probably against labor laws for a minor but dang the tips were great.
Half the staff were from the half way house. The lady who ran the buffet was awesome, she robbed a bank.

There was a sambos in Santa Barbara until last year. I think they just changed the name.

I remember eating at the one by McCreless Mall from time to time when I was growing up in San Antonio.

As a kid, I was too young to care about the quality of the food; a clear memory I have of the place is when we watched part of the infamous OJ White Bronco chase on the TVs there while we ate dinner.
