I thought it was cool this spring when there was an interview with Paul Raci from "Sound of Metal." He said that he was in a Black Sabbath cover band for a while where he would sing and sign the lyrics at the same time.

just because i'm bored here's more of that tale....Aerosmith was in town for a pre Super Bowl or March Madness party, and they put out that they needed a signer.  She put in her bid and weeks later, got notified she'd been selected.  days before the event they gave her a book with all the songs they might play, al backstage pass and a meal ticket (and free parking).  the day of they gave her a setlist so she could familiarize herself with the songs.  she was technically 'backstage' but said her 'backstage pass' was like, the lowest one, and there were various other passes but she did not have full access; she had stage and dining area access only, whereas the various crew and VIPs had the super mega deluxe passes, and even some of those weren't all access.  (and said the food was incredible).

parasol: Eightballjacket: parasol: Iamos: parasol: Iamos: parasol: Eightballjacket: ASL is very much preferable to having to actual listen to Cardi B sing/rap/whatever

so edgy!

There needs to be an inverse of the "Stop liking what I don't like" meme for cases like this. It's kinda like "Do Not Want" but not exactly. I can't say that I like Cardi B and in fact watched the clip with the sound off and found it amusing. But you know, I don't think that impacted your enjoyment of her music on iota, and that's fine.

What makes you think I enjoy her music?

Primarily your response to those who said they don't. At any rate, enjoy or don't, doesn't matter to me.

Assumption followed by indifference?
Sounds worthy of the thread *and* the subject.

My response was to "sing/rap/whatever". It was the slight of someone aiming for "less than" rather than "a genre/performer I don't care for and thus don't know about"

I don't particularly enjoy CardiB but took a minute to copy/pasta her awards to date to thwart the soft bigotry of ignorance in that dismissive "whatever"

The whatever I was referring to was the garbage that comes out of her mouth when she isn't singing/rapping such as her transphobic remarks. I know, so edgy.

So, you substituted "whatever" for the word "speak"?

You saw a video of a rap performance fronted by an ASL interpreter and posted:
ASL is very much preferable to having to actual listen to Cardi B sing/rap/whatever

You knee jerked to dismiss her as a performer and got called out.

Don't try to white knight yourself now and insist you posted "whatever" in that string of related words when what you really meant to post was "her personal politics" and so you'll backtrack and do it now.

That's transparently bullshiat.

I have a lot of respect for the folks doing the ASL work at live shows.  The folks who did Weird Al's show at Red Rocks a couple of years ago were fantastic, although a couple of segments of banter they had some trouble maintaining a straight face and delivering the joke.

Myk-House of El: The folks who did Weird Al's show at Red Rocks a couple of years ago were fantastic

I saw the post-Jerry dead play there about a decade ago, three night runs and I was able to catch each.  one night I was pretty close to the stage and the signer was in front of me and, i swear, i probably watched her at least half the show.  she was really, really into it. knew all the words, dancing away in her tie dye, and singing and signing her ass off.  it was pretty damn cool!

i remember vividly her singing/signing "Weather Report Suits", this like, 12 minute opus that starts slow and ends in a frenzy, Bob shouting the final verse:

What shall we say, shall we call it by a name?
As well to count the angels dancing on a pin
Water bright as the sky from which it came
And the name is on the earth that takes it in
We will not speak but stand inside the rain
And listen to the thunder shout
"I am!  I am!  I am! I am!"

Old girl was getting loose, having the time of her life.  ha!

rickythepenguin: an old HS acquaintance is a professional ASL interpreter. i asked her if she ever got to do "fun" things and she lit up and said she got to be Aerosmith's signer.

I went to RIT which is colocated with the NTID - the field house was huge and was a ticketmaster venue for most of the big bands traveling through western NY on their way to somewhere that mattered farther east. Due to large deaf population from the NTID, there were interpreters at all events (and most of my classes).

It was always amusing when bands or comedians would "discover" the ASL interpreter half way through the show and start saying ridiculous crap just to get the interpreter to have to sign what they were saying. This was back in the early to mid oughts - so I think the whole idea of ASL interpreting was still largely a novelty in live performances and speeches and such.

The best one I saw was when Black Sabbath was playing Lollapalooza.  They had a signer of to the side of the stage and at one point Ozzy crept up behind her and surprised her with a kiss on the cheek.   Her reaction was priceless, it was just hysterical

Thing I learned a long time ago.  When punk groups in SF in the late '70s were finding fewer and fewer venues that would hire out to them, someone approached the Club of the Deaf and they were fine with renting out their space.  It didn't bother the members because they wouldn't be bothered by the noise, and they could continue to drink at the bar there and feel the vibrations of the sound/music.  There was a compilation album issued, "'Can You Hear Me?' - Live at the Deaf Club", titled after a common question asked to see if one patron could converse with another.  (Featured Dead Kennedys, Mutants, the Offs, and a few others)  It's pretty damned cool, in fact.

Yes, we taught my daughter sign language when she was a toddler. Best thing we ever did. But the teacher mentioned that deaf people can get REALLY loud. They don't realize when they're making noise, let alone how loud it is. On top of that, when they get really agitated, just the signing itself can be loud. A bunch of slapping/smacking sounds.

We played against Gallaudet in college soccer. We were informed pregame that anytime the ref blew the whistle, we had to stop and put our hands up so they knew to stop. Anyone trying to fake them out would be given an automatic red card. They kicked our asses.

I played against a deaf guy in high school football (ohio) and I faked that a play had ended so I could get past him and make a tackle because he'd been owning me the entire game (he was a TE and I was a LB). I made my fake and my tackle and he laughed and shook his head. Then he absolutely drilled me a few plays later. He helped me up and we both laughed it off. Then we continued losing the game.

She was. The nuance might've been lost on you enjoying her enthusiasm for signing the other sounds, but she was both interpreting in ASL the lyrics of the song Ruin and the lead singer pumping up the crowd.

Also signing can get loud when agitated because just like with this interpreter being enthusiastic for ASL it adds emphasis to the words being expressed like we do with shouting. This can also change the meaning of some words, for example if I put my hands in an upside down triangle I would be signing vagina. If I aggressively smacked my hands a few times the same way at you, I'd be calling you a word that would get filtered.

Lumbar Puncture: Mikey1969: Snapper Carr: [YouTube video: Passionate Sign Language Interpreter At Rock Gig]

Same person I think.  Gotta appreciate ASL interpreters who channel the music's energy as well as the lyrics

Does she just play air guitar and air drums and mime cookie monster screams? I mean, it's cool to watch, and I love her enthusiasm, but does she sign?

She was definitely awesome. And yeah, I was pretty distracted just watching her get into it.

Yeah, I've heard some agitated conversations between non-hearing people.
