an old HS acquaintance is a professional ASL interpreter.  i asked her if she ever got to do "fun" things and she lit up and said she got to be Aerosmith's signer.  She didn't get to meet them but, as she said, "I'd be there signing, and kinda turn around, and 5' away, Stephen Tyler would be grinding all over Joe Perry.  That didn't suck!"

and obligatory retelling of riding the DC Metro one night and seeing two young college age folks having a furious lover's quarrel;  via ASL.  Gallaudet University, the nation's biggest university for the hearing impaired, is nearby and I'm guessing they were students.  the only people on the car were me and them, and for a good 20 minutes they were just going at it. i couldn't help but not notice/watch.  i bet the makeup sex was off the charts.....

We played against Gallaudet in college soccer. We were informed pregame that anytime the ref blew the whistle, we had to stop and put our hands up so they knew to stop. Anyone trying to fake them out would be given an automatic red card. They kicked our asses.

Right?
What does the industry know about "music"?

American rapper and songwriter Cardi B is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Grammy Award, five American Music Awards, eight Billboard Music Awards, six BET Awards, eleven BET Hip Hop Awards, four iHeartRadio Music Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, three Soul Train Music Awards and a NRJ Music Award. She has also earned five Guinness World Records during her career. Cardi B received the award for ASCAP Songwriter of the Year in 2019, the first time the accolade was presented to a female rapper.[1] She received the honor for the second time in 2020, making her the first female songwriter to win the award twice.[2] In 2020, Cardi became the first female rapper to be named Woman of the Year at the Billboard Women in Music Awards.[3]

Cardi B received her first Grammy Award nominations at the 60th annual ceremony, with "Bodak Yellow" being nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Her debut studio album Invasion of Privacy won Best Rap Album at the 61st annual ceremony, with Cardi becoming the first female rapper to win the category as a solo artist.[4] It also received a nomination for Album of the Year, with "I Like It" being nominated for Record of the Year and "Be Careful" for Best Rap Performance. Additionally, her collaboration with Maroon 5 "Girls Like You" received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Cardi became the third female rapper to be nominated for Album of the Year, following Lauryn Hill (1999) and Missy Elliott (2004).[5] At the 62nd annual ceremony, her collaboration with Offset, "Clout", garnered her a nomination for Best Rap Performance.[6]

"Finesse (Remix)" received a nomination for an MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year. Cardi B has received two nominations for the Brit Award for International Female Solo Artist (2019 and 2021), joining Missy Elliott as the only female rappers to be nominated multiple times in that category.[7] She has won three consecutive times both the Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Female Artist and the Bravo Otto for Hip Hop International. Invasion of Privacy won the BET Award for Album of the Year.

She is the most awarded female rapper at the Billboard Music Awards, BET Hip Hop Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, and Guinness World Records.

There needs to be an inverse of the "Stop liking what I don't like" meme for cases like this. It's kinda like "Do Not Want" but not exactly. I can't say that I like Cardi B and in fact watched the clip with the sound off and found it amusing. But you know, I don't think that impacted your enjoyment of her music on iota, and that's fine.

Sounds worthy of the thread *and* the subject.

My response was to "sing/rap/whatever". It was the slight of someone aiming for "less than" rather than "a genre/performer I don't care for and thus don't know about"

I don't particularly enjoy CardiB but took a minute to copy/pasta her awards to date to thwart the soft bigotry of ignorance in that dismissive "whatever"

I grew up in a small Missouri town (Fulton, MO) that was home to Missouri School For the Deaf (MSD).  A fond memory of that town was the common sighting of conversations in ASL occurring almost anywhere and anytime.  Many hearing people were competent in ASL due to employment and some deaf married couples lived in Fulton and raised families.  One of my high school friends had deaf parents who were lovely people.  As it happens in high school, there were times when we tried to sneak our friend out of his house to join some unauthorized high school activity.  His parents always caught him....not one single time did he ever successfully sneak out unnoticed.

I'm surprised the ASL version of WAP is as clean as it was in this video.  I think every farker would be overjoyed to witness an enthusiastic ASL practioner tell a dirty joke or cuss someone out.  It's beautiful.

I forgot to mention my advanced fanboy status when it comes to Marlee Matlin.  That woman is hotter than a two dollar pistol, brilliant, extraordinarily talented, and a fine human being.  There are two people on earth I would enjoy being told off by.  1. Marlee Matlin   2.  Judi Dench    That's my fetish.

So, you substituted "whatever" for the word "speak"?

You saw a video of a rap performance fronted by an ASL interpreter and posted:
ASL is very much preferable to having to actual listen to Cardi B sing/rap/whatever

You knee jerked to dismiss her as a performer and got called out.

Don't try to white knight yourself now and insist you posted "whatever" in that string of related words when what you really meant to post was "her personal politics" and so you'll backtrack and do it now.

That's transparently bullshiat.
