If only there was some thing they can get to help themselves out with this situation . They may have to leave the house once in awhile to do it , but many can be done from home these days .

I think it's a variant of the "deserving poor" premise.

I don't disagree, but from a practical standpoint trying to sort out the folks who are in this situation by malice or bad faith from honest persons in hard times delays the process. It's like that old saw about allowing the occasional criminal go free rather than imprison innocent persons.

My wife has been a vet tech for 20+ years.  It doesn't require a degree, but it does require a certificate and a certain amount of skill.  Definitely not a job for everyone.  But it's always been a poorly paid position (I think most folks would be surprised how lowly paid entry level veterinarians are too).  She loves her job, and her income is only supplementary for us, so her wage has never been a major issue.

As the minimum wage has risen, her salary has not.  Right now she is at $18 per hour, but the local McDonalds is hiring, starting at $15.50 per hour.  Last week her boss gave her grief about needing a couple days off to care for our granddaughter while our daughter went to the doctor for some tests.  My wife was pissed.  I told her to remind her boss that she can quit tomorrow and start at McDonalds for nearly the same rate.  She got the time off.

I'm not sure what to make of this, other than my wife is extremely underpaid and I'm curious how this will all end up shaking out.

Hey guys....benefits are stopping. And by the way, we don't have eviction protection anymore.

But really, what makes this suck so much is that society, as it is engineered today, doesn't easily allow people to buy an axe, a length of fishing line and go build a cabin in the woods.

Firstly, FTFY. Secondly, they do not want you to do that. They want you to go out and make them richer. Being equitable does not make one filthy rich. And, being understanding and willing to work things out is not a trait of the rich. They were dragged into the concessions they are giving as it is. Mark my words. We will either see the second revolution... or we will see wimpy Americans either being forced back into wage slavery, or prison from all the laws against doing anything to survive once you are not seen as playing the game. Oh, that's right, I forgot, no one should have to work. Everyone should just be able to sit on there asses at home all day typing stupid "wage slave" crap online. All the while a smaller portion of society pays higher and higher taxes.

If you get the land, you need a permit to cut the trees down. After that, a permit to use the lumber. Multiple permits to build the cabin. Permit to go fishing.  So yes, just can't live off the land without red tape.

Maybe you should drive: I'm not sure what to make of this, other than my wife is extremely underpaid and I'm curious how this will all end up shaking out

your wife needs to grow a pair and show the vet what mcdonalds is paying, and remind him/her that he should pay his people more than fast food workers if he wishes to retain them.

your wife should also start looking at other jobs, and ask for 25% more than she currently makes at them, and see what happens. or look at glassdoor or some of these jobs which compare salaries and see if she is indeed "market" or if she's getting ganked. She's probably getting ganked.

if she is, and is too comfortable to walk, and too submissive to stick up for how much she earns, then its on her.

Wow.

Like I said in the initial post, my wife did point out what the folks at McDonalds are now getting paid.  That's why she got the time off.  I thought that was obvious and didn't need to be directly referenced as most people would be able to understand. Obviously, in your case, I was wrong.  But thanks for pointing out that my wife needs to "grow a pair" (what does that even mean?).

As for looking at "Glass Door" or other shiatty sites,... yeah, not necessary.  Like I said in the original post, her job is supplemental income.  We've already taken the lay of the land, found that other vets pay roughly the same, and are not interested in creating more stress in our lives to find out we might be able to get a couple bucks more per hour.  The purpose of my post was to point out how these type of jobs don't pay all that much more than entry level jobs anymore, and can therefore not ask for too much in return.  Again, I thought that was somewhat obvious.

What's wrong with you?

Well-said. And part of what I was alluding to in "engineered".

I had a great Eid, thank you for asking. Since we are still observing Covid precautions during visits, "traffic" is light, is visiting people is a more intimate affair. My son's reaction was "I think this is the first time in my life I enjoy sitting with (much) older folks."

It sucks people will have to go back to garbage jobs with garbage pay, garbage conditions, garbage bosses and customers. But one thing I am glad about is two of my new coworkers from last year came from food service and they are not going back. They even had their old job call back and they told them to FO.

Hey, Hey everyone! Look at the person who doesn't understand how the world works!

Resident Muslim: . And, being understanding and willing to work things out is not a trait of the rich. They were dragged into the concessions they are giving as it is.

I forgot to add, I hold no grudges against "the rich" for several reasons:
- there is no "the rich", it's a continuous curve that definitely skews to one side, creating an us/them mentality will only bring animosity between people
- I want to be rich, heck I want to be filthy cleanly rich some day, and I've seen people do it
- people mock the term "job providers" (and God knows how it's been used politically and as a rally cry) but the reality is that either government creates jobs in a completely communist state (and we saw how that went) or people with money invest it in businesses or lend it out (and I'm against usury). I'm a start-up owner, and God knows how much of my money I've pumped into the business, I'd hate for it to skyrocket and have someone treat me as if I've taken advantage of people.
- "the rich" have to be part of the solution to society, and charitable spending in society only raises societal level. I would assume you are familiar with "Zakat" if you know and spell Eid. It's an opportunity to look at how Islam addresses charitable giving and taking care of the poor and those barely with means (which raises the level of everyone as they should get empowered themselves)
- me hating "the rich" would imply I have an unhealthy relationship with money and would respond accordingly behavior-wise to never become one of "them"

2021-08-02 8:52:19 AM
Oh, and my understanding is that the rich no longer stay rich by the third generation, ie rich entrepreneur, rich kids, grandkids that waste the money

FTFA: "Businesses across the state continue to say they would grow and expand, if it wasn't for the lack of workers," Marcia Hultman, secretary of the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation, said in May. "Ending these programs is a necessary step towards recovery, growth and getting people back to work"

Instead of making businesses stop offering poverty level wages, we're gonna make people desperate enough to take those wages or starve.

All the benefits are ending just as New Covid is clogging the hospitals at record levels.  Hospitalization is two to three week lagging indicator so if your hospitals top out but your case counts are still rising... well, imagine what that looks like a few weeks later.

sounds good to me.  where do I sign up for being in the "sitting on my ass" group.

most of the jobs are low paying in-person customer service (e.g. McDonalds, servers) during a pandemic where 40% of those people who have survived thus far refuse to believe it's worse than the flu.   gee whiz golly! I wonder why people aren't rushing to fill those jobs?
