Oddly enough, when you strip context from some practices, you lose some of those practices' impact.

I did get a snarf at McMindfulness though. It perfectly encapsulates the drive to appear far more spiritual than your actual practice-mainly because it is a goal of this sort of thing to be seen doing or talking about it.

Ah yes, the worship of Asian mysticism.

Because selfishness and douchery simply aren't present in the Yakuza, the Chinese government, the caste system, North Korea, etc.

To put it another way, looking at India like it is all about selflessness because Buddhism would be like glancing at America and saying "oh, they're christian. Jesus is so lovely and they are too".

Swing and a miss on both counts.

So a selfish bastard will become a stress free selfish bastard and be pleased about it? Who knew.

Also that water thing is bullshiat. Buy distilled water if you must, but no point carrying water from Japan.

Of course it is. Most of this health and wellness crap is financially lucrative, self-centered woo-woo.

"Ehhh,I have to love myself first, so I can love others!"
You do love yourself, biatch. You spent $50,000 on useless health remedies last year.

Distilled isn't the point. It was about the presence and proportions of the minerals in the water.

/At which point one might argue that depending on the filtration unit serving a specific area they do or do not get "authentic" food
//Depending on how we specify authenticity

A meditation practice without a gratitude practice is pretty common. A lot of people feel icky about loving-kindness meditation and generosity practices. So of course they're taking away the wrong things.

So what I'm saying is, if your meditation practice hasn't led you to keep money in your wallet for the express purpose of giving it to people asking for money, donated your time and money more, or become a more empathic person, you're totally doing it wrong and should look into a gratitude practice.

The HR team has been pushing mindfulness.  It's so annoying. Leave me alone and let me do my work.

Hey hey, there buddy, that isn't selfishness.  That's Jingoism. It's a whole other thing.  They're helping an entire group of people at the expense of other groups instead of helping themselves at the expense of the entire world.

One of my childhood friends came out to visit earlier this year. He started telling me that he's gotten into mindfulness and meditation and how important they are to making him a better person.

We stopped at a grocery store and without fail the guy left his cart sitting by my truck in the parking lot. I got out and put it back and told him to google "morals and shopping carts".

Sadly, not a joke.

The parallels between Buddhism and Catholicism are pretty astounding. Right down to the child abuse by the clergy, even.

The funny thing about the Yakuza? They were sometimes seen as protectors of the people because they kept the samurai from just abusing the crap out of them.

Buddhism has been used by terrible people to justify some pretty horrible sh*t--just as Jesus has been held up as an excuse to do some damn heinous bullsh*t. But you're not wrong with a lot of Westerners who adopt 'Asian practices" to seem deeper than they are, relying on a lack of experience with said culture and practices to hide how half-assed they are in their practice. Then again, you see Newage folks using Druidism, paganism, and Tarot mixed and shuffled with practices from across the globe in a mish-mash that is context free, and thus easily exploitable. Buddhist, Newage, Christians, Muslims, Jews, all can use their faith traditions as a cover for bullsh*t. And likewise, there are folks who use said traditions to help guide them to be better humans.

It's what you do with a faith that matters.

Fair distinction.
