Yes. It's just a calming repetitive movement. If you are in your rhythm, you can multi-task. I do a similar thing when I needlepoint. It's like the precursor of a fidget spinner and all the other fidget items. Your hands are occupied so you mind is free.

Anyone who's had kids who wrestled, were swimmers, gymnasts, or participated in any activity where you'd spend all day on site for about two minutes of action immediately gets it.

Hell I knew a marine that said he wished he could crochet on the line waiting for shiat to happen.  Obviously he could not, he had things for his hands to be ready to do that were a touch more important, but he said it would have been nice to just having something to do while you were pretty much waiting to see if the ball went up.  1st Iraq participant, genuinely big and scary mofo, and excellent at crochet.  His wife wore stuff that he'd made because it actually looked good, not just out of humor the crafter

Yes. I have completed more stitching in the past 3 months of taking my kids to gymnastics and guitar lessons, which we started again once I was fully vaccinated, than in the previous several years. It's great for when you just have to sit and wait around for someone/something.

Much more socially acceptable than rubbing one out.
