Well, duh. They want smart and dedicated citizens voting, not mooching losers who are too dumb to realize how great it is to work for the Investor Class. Sheesh.

Wide partisan divide on whether voting is a fundamental right or a privilege with responsibilities.

It's a fundamental right with responsibilities. I used to go to our local League of Women Voters chapter to get thier written info on candidates and ballot issues, because I didn't want to walk into the voting booth and have to decide cold "Shall the Constitution be amended to allow the local governing jurisdiction to levy an assessment against outstanding debt on state property leased to the Federal Government or any subdivision thereof to provide funds for the provisions of O.C.G.A. §76-6-301(a)(7)?"

It's self serving in a sense when you think about it. If everyone voted, no Republicans would ever hold a majority nationwide.

2021-08-01 11:48:26 AM
Imagine conservative voters in a bubble (or, maybe outside of their current bubble is a better way to put it). Imagine if they weren't spoonfed lies hour after hour after hour by their politicians and their media. That responsibility was taken instead of blaming "liberal communist socialists" for everything from AIDS to SIDS to [username redacted]. Imagine if they gave "their" side skepticism instead of idolatry.

I don't doubt that while we may not have a unified country, we sure as fark wouldn't have divisions on issues like THIS. The anti-vaxxers' messages would have by and large been drowned out. Mail-in voting would be as popular with red states as it is with conservatives in blue states. Donald Trump would be as irrelevant as Bush the Lesser after he left office...

For the record, if we're going to go ahead and restrict voting then it should be based on IQ.

Goodbye Republicans.

I don't know what a JD Vance is is other than possibly a LGBTQ soft rock singer from the 90s who IIRC was Canadian, but I don't imagine a person who is being quoted like that actually *RAISES* their children. They're q conversation piece or prop, moreso than a focus of that person's life.

/and I bet you JD is one of those "those are MY children, they are MY property until they turn 18" types who freaked the fark out when the HPV vaccine started being advertised

Fine. Make voting contingent on passing a Constitutional rights exam.

I don't think they'll like who gets to vote.

Republicans hate America. They hate democracy. They hate everything this nation was founded upon.

They must be excised from the body politic.

We used to.

It was the 60s and 70s, to be precise, when this bullshiat wrangling was very much offscreen and confined to election years, which only lasted about six months of the actual year of the vote.

I remember, because I was there.

People have kids when they feel safe and have a future.

The phenomenon of childless X'ers and Millennials is directly traceable to their lack of income and lack of social safety nets.

Want more kids? Give raises and advancement. Oh, and deal with climate change, 'cause that is also making it look like nobody has a future. And they don't.

Republicans scream loudest about how much they live the USA, yet frequently have the lowest level of understanding as to how its democratic process works.

2021-08-01 1:01:32 PM
Considering most Republicans couldn't pass a basic sanity/ignorance test, they're lucky it's a right, rather than a privilege with responsibilities.

Republicans think voting is for whites ONLY. Wealthy white male landowners. Like the founding fathers intended to maintain their power over the prisoners with jobs.

They want QUALITY votes, not Quantity.

"Only the finest baby votes, dew-picked and flown from Iraq, cleansed in the finest quality spring water, lightly killed, and sealed in a succulent, Swiss, quintuple-smooth, treble-milk chocolate envelope, and lovingly frosted with glucose.

There's also some hints in the Declaration, at "deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed".

Wouldn't it be great if there was a source of reference to settle the issue?

Like the 15th Amendment to the US Constitution....

The whole American Taliban pathos is dependent on people not knowing basic math and not knowing the difference between privileges and rights.

The fact that Republicans in their present fascist manifestation get close to being elected at all really puts the "vile" in privilege.

2021-08-01 1:14:02 PM
Let me guess without clicking.

Republicans think voting is more a privilege than a right and should be reserved for white people.

The less education you have the more likely you are to think this,

The older you are the more likely you are to think this,

The more education you have the less likely you are to think this.

How did I do?

/Republicans are fascist.

So you're saying that there should be some kind of test, maybe on their...I dunno, literacy, to see who can vote?

It's not okay when shiatheads did it, so it's not okay when anybody else does it either.

Voting a right? We don't let children vote.

On the other hand gun use is a 2nd Amendment absolute right and there are no laws that keep children from using guns.

GA used to have no-excuse absentee voting...until this year.  Not sure if it is enacted law yet, but pretty confident the bill passed.  Google-fu brings up nothing about its status.

Moving on to my wife's recent (and last) visit to her Trumpy folks.  Her mother refused to believe that no-excuse absentee voting was not going to be an option next time.  She acted as if my wife spoke heresy.

A lot of these voting integrity laws are gonna bite a lot of scooter-based R voters.

"...they had things, levels of voting that if you'd ever agreed to it, you'd never have a Republican elected in this country again,"

~ Trump, March 2020 ~

Republicans have known this since forever.

But rather than make their platform more appealing to the larger voter populace, they would rather violate the spirit of the 15A and try to prevent their opposition from voting.

The GOP knows they are a minority. They could move to the left or they could undermine democracy and the direction they have chosen is obvious.

"A lot of these voting integrity laws are gonna bite a lot of scooter-based R voters."

This is a theory I've heard a couple of times, now. That the Republicans may lose as many votes as they suppress. It seems as likely as anything.

Among the few GOP associates that I've spoken to about this subject, I agree with Subby. Not a lot of data points mind you, but they all fall in line with that statement.

Yeah.  We have something of an inkling of how much kids cost and how much time they take.  We also know that it now effectively takes dual-incomes for most families to even have a chance to maintain the traditional single-family detached home with a yard for kids to play in.

It's impossible for most families to have both the kids and the residence that one wants for their kids to live in.  If we have the kids then either we have to pay that much more for childcare, or else someone has to stop working in order to raise them.  Both of these take away the money needed to maintain what we're told is a desirable lifestyle.

If government wants more kids then government needs to prioritize taxes and programmes to make this possible.  Stop giving tax breaks to people that don't need them and give them to families.

It's already a privilege, not a right. If you're a felon you can't vote. Or buy a gun legally. You could say that they're rights that you can give up but that's just semantics.

Dear Jerk: The GOP knows they are a minority. They could move to the left or they could undermine democracy and the direction they have chosen is obvious.

This is essentially where we find ourselves in this country. The R's are cornered rats, their actions prove it.

2021-08-01 1:34:53 PM
I could fall on either side. If you ask me if I think voting is a fundamental right, and leave it at that, I'll say yes. But I also believe that voting should be limited to US citizens. Also I believe we need to make sure that every citizen can easily vote, and know their vote will be secure and counted. And we should be bending over backwards to make sure that happens.

2021-08-01 1:35:53 PM
Privilege is what I get for being who I am. A lot of people don't seem to understand this definition.

A right is what I get by default. And everybody gets it automatically. A sadly large number of people don't seem to understand this definition.

Should be based on if you have empathy and support democracy and rights of everybody.

Ever noticed that all the protests to have more rights by women, minorities and workers are aimed at the conservatives because they are the ones trying to oppress everyone?

Not just families, low wage earners in general. It's hard to start a family if you can't get started on your own.
