While the added fru-fru does sort of take away from the routine as an expression of raw physicality, the music does have an advantage in timing. Yes, there is the deduction for finishing early or late, but a musical cue is vital for dance, and when you're dealing with ballet and some forms of modern dance, you have elements that are close to as strenuous as modern gymnastics. Having that pacing cue isn't necessarily a bad thing for the demonstration.

Then why haven't men insisted on using music sometime in the past century?

Mark Williams, head coach of men's gymnastics at the University of Oklahoma, said he thinks it makes sense for women to have music as part of their floor routines.
"Men's events focus on the upper body of the human anatomy, while women focus on legs and running techniques," he said.

1. Women's events focus on legs.
2.
3. Therefore you need music.

Seems like there's something missing there.

2021-08-01 12:15:42 PM
Aside the point deductions for starting or finishing at the wrong time, the music is additionally a detriment throughout, since they're trying to choreograph timing to the music. That may mean exactly four beats between landing and starting the next run (during which the gymnast has to wave her arms around like an idiot), while the comparable male gymnast gets to stand there, pause and visualize his next run (without flapping his arms), and start when he's ready, whether that's three seconds or four seconds.

I've seen hubie post a seversl times about gymnastics and he seems to know about it. Along with another poster the other day, they were quite informative and seemed to know what they were talking about.

Huh.

I would prefer that the men also did their floor routines to music. It adds something.

Balance beam doesn't have music but they still do that stuff where they flit their hands around and it looks deranged without music.

csb - I used to photograph womens' gymnastics and up close there was much more of a feeling of power and confidence than comes across on tv.

Um, moronmitter, Floor is, aside from vault, the only thing common between men and women's gymnastics.  And as a person that has watched both, floor is virtually identical.  Men, by and large, perform slightly more difficult routines.  And their feet are large, hairy, and ugly.  But... aside from that it's literally 100% identical.

Stop being a moron.

Is 'every freaking thing is sexist!' the new 'everything is racist?' these days?  Seems like it.  There's enough ACTUAL sexist and racist things out there to be angry at than having to just make crap up and then get angry about it.  It seriously has to be exhausting getting angry at everything ALL THE TIME.  Just stop.

/Leotards are worn because that's the most comfortable way to do gymnastics moves.
//Men don't wear leotards because they have penises.  If they did, that's all anyone would talk about is seeing all the bulges.  Which is sexualization.  Hmm. But no one ever complains when it happens to men...

A buddy of mine was a collegiate gymnast and said it was pretty much like the circus in that everybody slept with everybody.

In elementary school there was a girl who had arms in fourth grade who put the vast majority of the guys to shame, not that anybody was a bodybuilder or anything but she had muscles on muscles even then. She invited all of her friends to some overnight birthday party at her gymnastics place so we got to be dazzled as she had fun and showed off on all the different stuff while us pussies did all sorts of jumping off structures and trampolining into piles of foam blocks.

Eventually she had to quit in high school due to repeated injuries which sucks but is not exactly rare, not that such is a secret. Everybody is short but they're all ridiculously built.

Love watching gymnastics.

I always hated the comment, when the gymnast would have a big fake smile pasted on their face, "Oh, and she will get extra points for that great smile!". Turned that shiat off for good.

Honestly, the women's competition is more enjoyable to watch because of the music and choreography. But it's hard to justify why the two aren't treated more similarly.
