Elvis's last known x-ray

The fact he held on as long as he did while on more daily meds than a combined Nursing Home/Frat House is a testament to how robust the guy really was.

I'm not sure how healthy it is that a historical biographer is infatuated with their subject and probably is heavily invested in these:

You can be in poor health AND be a drug addict.

The author talks about restoring Elvis' humanity with her ideas in the book.

Not needed, imo.  Rags to riches, cult of personality and talent, charitable and flawed, had health issues including substance abuse issues.  That's pretty human.

2021-08-01 12:14:05 PM
Hoedel, a lifelong fan, believes that much of the reams of literature about the singer, starting with Albert Goldman's 1981 Elvis, have distorted his image, and she believes that a revision is overdue.

Really now?

When he died the first reports was he died in his sleep clutching a teddy bear and a bible.
It was soon leaked that he died face down in the bathroom, jammies round the ankles clutching
a Playboy, due to a heart attack caused by constipation from having every available known opiate in his blood stream.

Please, it was his habit of fried peanut butter sammiches, drug abuse and being worked like a racehorse
by his criminal manager that led to his demise.

Why sugar coat it? Most talented artists are always somewhere on the damaged or asshole scale.
/i guess the revision would be he was raptured straight up into the clouds.

Citation needed.  And if it's the alleged "Negroes can't do anything for me but buy my records and shine my shoes," that's been debunked, repeatedly.  There aren't credible sources that suggest that Elvis personally was racist.  (You can argue that his selling of black music for white audiences was exploitation, but that's a different issue.)  Hell, even Chuck D ("Elvis ... was a racist, simple and plain") has walked that accusation back.

He died straining, trying to push out a poop, because he'd farked up his body by his early forties.

Even the most unhealthy people I know that started out with genetic predisposition to early morbidity, survived into their fifties.

Thanks for mentioning "Colonel Parker" ... Elvis was a victim of a life-long con. If he felt he had to struggle to support his family and entourage, perhaps it was because some parasite was taking 50%...

And if "Colonel Parker" could have loosened the reigns enough for Elvis to ever tour the world, the amount of money to be made would have been staggering. But no, the illegal immigrant couldn't travel overseas, and he didn't trust Elvis enough to book the gigs and stay behind.

Regarding Elvis' constipation, in the book "Gulp" it was written that he always had constipation issues going back to his youth, and that his mother supposedly had to help Elvis poop at some times.

No, I think it was the drugs - same as every single big deal musician who died 'too young'.
They all load up on drugs and the lucky ones manage to kick the habit before it kills them.

If he hated blacks, why did he allow his daughter to kind of marry a man who sort of identified as one sometimes?  Sure he didn't attend the wedding but he couldn't get anyone to cover his shift at the diner.

It obviously means that you lack genetic resistance to that thing.  Many French aristocrats, for example, lacked genetic resistance to the guillotine.

While some have sought to portray the family as hillbillies, the author points out that inter-marriage was not at the time unusual across society. Presley's forebears may have made marriage choices because of poverty and proximity, but Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt married to keep wealth in the family.

Eleanor and Franklin just had the same name. Like Smith. They were fifth cousins. Pretty much everyone is a fifth cousin. I think my wife is a 5th cousin to George HW Bush. And, IIRC, the George W and Obama are 5th cousins. IOW, 5th cousin is really, really remote.

As for first cousin marriages, Charles "Apeman" Darwin married his 1st cousin.  You can calculate the genetic danger of marrying your 1st cousin, but it's pretty unlikely that you'd notice. Repeatedly marrying that close is a bad idea, but you're kids won't be idiots because of a one-off.

Elvis had a good or great five years, and a long, slow, fifteen year decline.  Problem was, nobody would admit it.

However, he is correct that historically, marrying one's cousin was considered a good option for protecting family wealth rather than dividing it.

Of course the US is about the only western country where cousin marriage is legally prohibited (in the states that it is). China, Korea, a few countries in Southeast Asia, and the former Yugoslavia also ban it.

IIRC, the Colonel was an old carny that was determined to grab every buck he could with the least effort.  Sign up Elvis to Hollywood at a million bucks a picture, and crank 'em out.  Dolly Parton said that was one of the reasons that he never recorded "I Will Always Love You" - it was a personal song, but beyond that, Elvis would have to get songwriting credit (the Colonel's demand), and she would've cut her money in half.  Parker kept on making money long after Elvis died, with all his fingers in Elvis's financial pies.

Dad and brother drama additions aside, I thought it was a pretty accurate portrayal.   They nailed the goofy haircut and the portrayal of Agincourt was about as close to record as you've seen on the screen;   Dudes beating each other to death while trying not to suffocate in the mud.

I'm glad to be proven wrong with those links and explanations, but I also have to consider the young wife, the cultural appropriation as a macro aggression and his support for Nixon, who really did hate African-Americans. I can't believe he was to LGBTQA+ friendly in that climate either.

Now, I'm majorly impressed how Nashville has become an inclusive city and it is one of the cities I want to visit in the United States if that becomes a thing again.

Thank you again for concluding those direct accusations and I have learned something today.

Between that and a doctor told to prescribe whatever they had to in order to keep Elvis getting up on stage, he was doomed a long time before he died.
