I misread the article headline as "Googles Mishap Troubles..." and thought the Games had gone virtual for the last week and was off to a poor start right off the block.

so the swimmer finished her leg and her finishing time was similar to her gold medal winning individual time, and the team that won it, won it with a world record time.

But the US team's race was "undone" by goggles?

It wasn't just close to what she had done previously, it was the third fastest women's 100m breast stroke at the Tokyo Olympics, 0.14 seconds behind her gold medal (and 0.04 seconds behind her women's medley time).

It seems the biggest factor was having her swim that leg in the first place. No offense to her as she is clearly an amazing swimmer, but the gap between mens and womens times generally seems to be significantly greater in the breaststroke than the other strokes. Which explains why only one other team had a woman swim that leg.

Yeah, just looking at the men's and women's 4x100 medley splits, the best strategy would be to have the men swim the breaststroke and butterfly with the women swimming the backstroke and freestyle.
Would have saved more than a second.
