I might be around quite a bit. There's also a 24 hour motor race on YouTube so that will get the Chromebook while I stream Olympic stuff so I might try to pull an all-nighter.

Pffffft, not even close. Once again, I gave my greatest present to America this past year on her birthday: a completely accurate 1:13m mile. I will permit my lessers to fight over meaningless baubles and accolades because they know their victories are hollow.

Arn Anderson was once asked why he let Ric Flair run the Four Horsemen. Highlighting his eternal greatness, Anderson emphasized "let" in his reply. I let these fools adorn themselves with false titles.

Finally got around to watching the Opening Ceremonies today, which I couldn't do when they first aired thanks to a combination of last-minute extra work in the morning and a long-planned trip starting in the afternoon.

It was...pretty muted indeed. The part with the event icons was better than the actual opening ceremony at the beginning. Glad I had the chance to fast-forward as much of the Parade of Nations as I wanted.

If anyone is interested in watching the back end of the field, golf has started.

Meanwhile, I'm watching a replay the Spain-Ivory Coast in soccer from this morning. It was 1-1 when CIV scored in the 1st minute of stoppage time to look like they won it. Spain brings on a sub who scored a minute later after a defensive flub to force extra time. Spain scored a penalty and that sub scored two more to win the match for ESP 5-2 and the sub's hat trick came, technically, in less than 30 minutes.

Last group-stage matchday scenarios for various sports:

Men's Basketball Scenarios
13:40 (12:40am ET) - Argentina vs Japan - Winner is third place, and will be ahead of Czech Republic on point difference, thus earning a quarterfinal berth.
17:20 (4:20am ET) - Spain vs Slovenia - Both are 2-0 and have advanced, so the winner claims the group and a seed in the draw, thus avoiding a quarterfinal against the US or fellow group champions France and Australia.

Women's Basketball Scenarios
10:00 (9:00pm ET) - Canada vs Spain - Spain clinches the group with a win, while a Canada win secures a berth and probably the group title, though Serbia would still have a chance.
21:00 (8:00am ET) - Serbia vs Korea - Korea likely needs a 7-point win to have any chance to advance; Serbia is through with a win. If Canada pulled an upset earlier in the day, Serbia will have a margin of victory to target to win the group.

Men's Indoor Volleyball Scenarios
Group A
9:00 (8:00pm ET) - Poland vs Canada - Poland has advanced, and wins the group with a win. Canada has advanced, and would win the group with a 3-0 win (or a 3-1 win with a big point margin) and an Italy loss later on.
16:25 (3:25am ET) - Italy vs Venezuela - Italy has advanced, and wins the group with a win and a Poland loss. Venezuela is 0-4 and will not advance.
19:40 (6:40am ET) - Japan vs Iran - Winner advances, loser is out.

Group B
11:05 (10:05pm ET) - Brazil vs France - Brazil has advanced and wins the group with a win and ROC loss. France could win the group with a full win* and ROC loss, but a full loss* and a ARG 5-set win would knock them out of the quarterfinals.
14:20 (1:20am ET) - ROC vs Tunisia - ROC has advanced, and wins the group with a full win* (or any win if Brazil lost). Tunisia is 0-4 and will not advance.
21:45 (8:45am ET) - USA vs Argentina - Winner advances, loser is out EXCEPT in France's nightmare scenario. If France had a full loss*, USA would sneak into the quarterfinals if they lose in 5 sets.
* - A full win is one accomplished in 3 or 4 sets. For tiebreaker purposes, that's much better than a 5-set win.

Field hockey knockouts begin today, football knockouts already in progress, women's water polo has all 8 quarterfinalists locked in already, and I don't care enough about handball and neither do you. OK, in women's water polo, USA is sitting out today but will be watching to see if Hungary loses to China (14:00, 1am ET) because if they do, USA wins the group. Otherwise, they are second place.

Evening all. You should be watching the Eventing Cross Country right now. It's awesome.

I've seen many of these riders in person at The Kentucky Three Day Event, and it's absolutely astonishing what they do, how fast they go, and how BIG these jumps are. TV doesn't do it justice.

Some additional highlights and notes on today's schedule

9:00 (8:00pm ET) - Beach volleyball knockout rounds begin. 8 women's matches and 2 men's matches today, the reverse is true tomorrow. As is "traditional", one US women's pair is playing the first match today and the other is playing the first match tomorrow because NBC wants those bikinis in prime time. The US men play at 13:00 (midnight ET) today and 22:00 (9am ET) Monday.

11:30 (10:30pm ET) - Duke Ragan (featherweight) is the first of three male American boxers who will try to secure a medal by winning their quarterfinals. Super-heavyweight Richard Torrez will do the same at 19:06 (6:06am ET), followed by lightweight Keyshawn Davis on Tuesday.

19:30 (6:30am ET) - US vs Chinese Taipei in a first-round table tennis women's team battle. It's five matches (single, single, double, single, single), each of which is best-of-5 games to 11, and the winner is one step closer to getting annihilated by China.

Interesting fact: The 1956 Summer Olympics were the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, (Melbourne, Australia).  The SUMMER Olympics were held in November and December.  Also, there was a fatal horse disease going on down under at the time.  So.  The Equestrian Event for the 1956 Olympics were held MONTHS earlier...in Stockholm Sweden.

Not overly surprising, but still impressive.. Elite equestrian riders can be anywhere from like 20-65. Oldest female Olympian ever was a British equestrian rider in 1972, at 70 years old.
