Sam: No, I'm just saying isn't this more of a military area?
Toby: Military?
Sam: Yeah.
Toby: You think the United States is under attack from twelve hundred Cubans in row boats?
Sam: I'm not saying I don't like our chances.

Jesus, you'd think they turn around and go the other direction after 3-4 days

Angel, isn't this trip supposed to be about a day?

I know what I'm doing

If one has read fark long enough, it isn't news that people from Miami jump on a raft to escape the third world shiat hole to land in the paradise that is Havana.

No one ever considers how difficult it is to actually cross a wide expanse of flowing water without things like paddles or a hull shape that allows some degree of control.

If they had practiced before setting out for this little expedition then they'd probably have had a better chance of making it and what they needed to do it, or they would have realized how futile it was and would've tried a different method.

You made it that far.  You were out of Cuba.  Why press your luck?

Umm, their Cuban passports allowed them to travel to Russia. They were trying to cross the Narva River into Estonia so they could travel to Spain. They weren't traversing a great expanse of water. Well, the Atlantic counts, but they probably did that by airplane.

Why would you abandon a territory with a supply center?

For a time in the '70s idiots were constantly hijacking American planes to demand they fly to Cuba. This happened so frequently that all US flights took off with maps and sufficient fuel to reach Cuba. The US government contemplated building a replica of Havana airport in Florida as a means to catch them.

When they arrived in Cuba, Cuban authorities welcomed the hijacker off the plane, which they then refuelled and sent on its way. The hijackers assumed they'd be welcomed in Cuba as heroes. They were happy to be welcomed.

Of course, Castro wasn't stupid. He knew these people were unstable and dangerous. What happened once they were welcomed is they were quietly taken into custody and interrogated thoroughly to determine if they were a threat. Those who were were thrown into prison for life. Those who weren't were put up in a special residential block far away from ordinary Cubans where they could live peacefully under heavy surveillance.

Idiots.

I've been to Narva before. You can stand on the Estonian side and wave to people on the Russian side. There's even a nice little park/viewing spot set up.

They should've gone further south where the border is in the forest and it's lightly patrolled.

Maybe they could've waited until the river froze over
