Russia is banned, Russians are not

/unless they are banned in which case they don't compete

I don't get this ban at all. Were athletes from South Africa allowed to compete during the apartheid ban as independents? I get the athletes not doping would be penalized because of the actions of others, but a ban is a ban, right? But then again, the Olympics are not run by the smartest people in class.

Athletes have competed as Independent Olympians at the Olympic Games for various reasons, including political transition, international sanctions, suspensions of National Olympic Committees, and compassion. Independent athletes have come from Macedonia, Cambodia, East Timor, South Sudan and Curaçao following geopolitical changes in the years before the Olympics, from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (present-day Montenegro and Serbia) as a result of international sanctions, from India and Kuwait due to the suspensions of their National Olympic Committees, and from Russia for mass violations of anti-doping rules.

I feel like we're being punked now.

Why are they even allowed to use the word "Russian" and able to have ROC all over their gear? Their own logo with Russian colors??

What happened to competing under the Olympic banner.

Black flag them all. Tell the athletes to move to another country. A ban means banned.

They're trying to find a balance between being fair to athletes who aren't doping, which I understand, but cheating is too pervasive in Russia and frankly I'm still suspicious.  Plus their "compromise" of basically just re-naming Russia as ROC is total BS.  The other athletes have spoken out about it, too, and at least a few have publicly said that they don't think they should be there.

At first I thought they should just have them compete under a generic independent Olympic athlete flag and colors, like the refugee team, and keep a clamp on patriotic displays by taking away medals from violators.  I'm starting to agree with the athletes, though, and their performances will always have an asterisk of suspicion due to the behavior of their home country.  I wouldn't put it past them to have secretly developed a PED to circumvent known tests but, even if not, they need to be very harshly punished for ever having a state-sponsored cheating program in the first place.  Apologies to any clean Russian athletes, maybe your country should try having a less corrupt, shiatty, petty leader.

There are some hot Russian athletes, but you know.... there are a shiat ton of hot athletes from other countries that don't cheat.  I'm already nursing crushes on athletes from Columbia, Egypt, multiple members of the US and Turkish volleyball teams, some rugby players, some track and field athletes....  I don't need to add cheaters to what is already an embarrassment of eye candy riches.

Saying that these particular athletes haven't been caught doping kind of ignores that the entire foundation of Russia's international competitive culture is built on that doping. Even the cleanest athlete in the system was supported indirectly from the success of the systemic cheating.

I say that we just let all the athletes dope. Let's see how strong people can *really* get. I wanna see some 300lb musclebound Filipina woman with bacne just straight up throw a car.

The ethical slope though is when it comes to countries that don't really give much choice to their contenders and will happily sacrifice their long-term health for short-term goals like olympic baubles.  It would add to the entertainment value in the same way that the romans crowded the coliseums to watch people suffer for their entertainment.

Turkish women's volleyball ftw!  Hande Baladin is freaking stunning!  And a damned good outside hitter.

They look like a team of frickin' models, and they're total ballers to boot.  Their match vs. the US was a great one and I expect they may meet again.

I know it's not going to happen but it would be kinda funny if the ROC won the gold and total medal counts.

I actually agree with that completely. And now we can justify turning this from a hot Russian Olympian thread into a hot anywhere Olympian thread!

The first one is for @Anderson's Pooper:

I take umbrage with the "don't punish the athletes who weren't part of the problem" thinking.

If you punish them, it sends a message to future dopers, doping facilitators and officials: You're won't just screw things up for yourself and your country at present if you pull these antics. You'll also screw it up for everyone else, including those who come after you.

I'd think that would go a much longer way toward stopping some of this nonsense.

In certain walks of life, I'm a big believer in collective punishment when done with an eye for whether or not it produces the intended results but I can't quite get there in this case. How long are we talking about here? The next Olympics? I don't entirely disagree with you but I'm pretty wary about punishing individuals for something they didn't do, especially when for most of them they'll only get one shot. Admittedly, I don't have an easy answer for this.

My solution is to let all of the athletes competing against Russians take PEDs.
