Once had a businessman tell me I should start my own business after we talked about the success of his. I of course said something along the lines of not having the kind of money required to start a business. He laughed and said "No successful businessman ever uses his own money!" before walking away. It's stuck with me ever since.

Enlighten me as to what the "valid criticism" is here.  I should be angry that Neuralink has raised money from investors, just like damn near every other noteworthy company on the planet?

You don't even know what it does or what it's for and you're already defending it.

Why?

If musk believed in this he'd be keeping 100% ownership. But, never use your own money really is a solid business rule, even for the wealthiest people in the world

It's another scam exactly like solar city.  Lie about what you have, make up ridiculous promises about what it will do in the near future, and get a bunch of people (like Tesla shareholders) to bail out your crappy investment based on those lies when it is about to go bankrupt.

It is now at phase 2.

Wow, this thread got strange fast.  I feel like if someone doesn't immediately shiat all over whatever the latest thing Elon Musk did or said, it goes straight to weirdnerdvalidcrit.jpg.

Starting or expanding a business with other peoples money is exactly how you do it.  Sometimes you do it with public money (stocks), sometimes with private money (investments), and sometimes with borrowed money(bonds/loans).  It's pretty rare if it's just your own money.

You do it with your own money when you don't want anyone else to play with your new plaything or you can't get any other money.  Blue Origin for example is the former and early SpaceX is the latter.

I get why folks hate Musk.  Your daddy totally owns a dealership, and Tesla proves every that dealerships should. not be a thing.

What's weird is that the headline isn't even a Musk insult. Even the people "defending" Musk are saying exactly what the headline says: This is how you become wealthy - never actually risk your own money (of course, the reason everyone says they deserve to be obscenely wealthy is because of the risk involved).

Musk is just providing the most current example.

I literally pointed out that you'll biatch about it which ever eat he goes with financing the companies he runs.  I haven't defended either approach because there's nothing controversial about it.  Your meme is a complete non sequitur.

But his followers are a weird cult and they need to cut that out.

Nah. Farkers who dislike Musk are a weird cult. Look at any thread about him. And it's essentially an instant green if you write a negative headline about Tesla.

Yes, because he is an American. Under US law, spending money is 2 thing: free speech, and an expression of political will. Whatever Musk does with beain cell will be considered a utilitarian good that will be defended, even is it does terrible tings to thoe brain cells. Becaue the investment is, alo under American law, a meaured level of good, since invetment money is legally treated as a valid way to preent a utility calculus. Whatever the Neuralink does to harm people, it will always be incumbent on the victims to prove their harm is quantitatively outwieghs the investment amounts. This is neural tech. Neur-allll-tek.  There are not even laws governing it, but the investment money will be the thing that regulators will have to somehow always accommodate, from now until forever.

The investment is a clear and preent danger. Like investors who funnel money into private schools of other charities that are fronts for laundering money to Al Qaeda, we need to shut these invetor down, for the same kind of reasons. The investment is going to leverage huge harms to networks of communication and propaganda, and inflict peronal injuries along the way, to eventually attempt toppling democracy. Musk is already ucceeding at regulatory capture in vehicles and space weaponry. Why would we allow his investors to continue with their bagging about further taking democracy (in this cae, the neural basis for interpersonal relationships and commerce), and burning it down?
