Yeah, pretty much the only way to get rid of the birds is to close and cleanup or cap the waste facility. Birds are persistent and will eventually overcome or ignore most of the attempts to scare them off.
We have facilities where we've tried the fake owls, the shiny whirly things, lasers, etc. The only two things that worked so far are netting (fine enough to keep the birds from setting up a roost) and there is a gel that irritates their feet. And we don't have exposed food or trash to attract them.

Our landfills use falcons. They are extremely effective.

And with all the extreme weather conditions worsening, not only is it highly unlikely that the gorillas will freeze to death come winter, but the chances of firegullnadoes are up to record levels!!

/when the feral cat army finally managed to annex their second baggage terminal, they colluded with the gulls in an attempt to overthrow the few remaining souls of the TSA, and would maybe have succeeded had the tactical needle snakes not been deployed.

Behren is concerned the loud noises will disturb the kids at the Williston Enrichment Center where she is the director.
"Can often trigger some responses in children that can cause some pretty sad children, and some dysregulation," Behron said. "That's nothing that we want our kids exposed to."

Lol. I guess explaining to kids that it's a firework intended to scare the birds off without hurting them is too far fetched. Because a 200 passenger jet crashing into the ground due to an engine stall caused by a flock of seagulls is a much better alternative.

That seems like very poor planning.  Everybody knows dumps attract birds (and all kinds of other scavengers).  WTF did they expect to happen?  And people who live near an airport and landfill are shocked (Shocked!) that they have a low quality of life?  I guess I can understand them not wanting things to get any worse but shouldn't they expect that by now?

as a child i was exposed to a Klaxon horn posted very close to our house. it was set off to alarm fire men, and at certain times why i don't know. it was so loud the typical reaction was to burst out crying. i was a nervous wreck by the time i was 7. explaining the boom boom cannons to the kids don't make them any more palatable.

I lived by PDK for more than 30 years and the situation was similar to TFA. Their bird scarer is an air cannon mounted over near the waste transfer station near the CDC. It's usually fired off in the mornings. After a while, you get used to it.

I never realized how noisy that neighborhood was until I moved.

I had to look up "dysregulation".  Ah, an unwillingness of parents to make their kids behave properly.

I wonder why these people dont get called out immediately and to their face for all to see, like "ok karen what alternative do you propose? Nothing? So what if you end up in the next flight taken down by a bird in the engine? Oh that wont happen to you? So its ok if it happens to someone else? Ok fark off byeee!"

Children are probably the next noisiest thing in that area after the airport.

Feed lots were catching this at the same time.  A friend who lost his olfactory senses in an accident picked up a decent house on the cheap, waited it out, and sold after the feed lot was purchased and the new development attracted curious shoppers.

He still doesn't know the smell of victory.

Not subby but definitely guilty of doing it from time to time.  Regardless, now the thread is for mocking people too stupid to notice a sugar crash, insomnia, or even more serious things like anorexia, a seizure or stroke.  you gotta admit, that's like assisted living levels of incompetent to not notice it.

Yeah the only time I feel sorry for someone living by an airport is like what happened in Milwaukee - the airport went commercial in the 40s but there was a lot of housing stock to the east (and more built up around that time), but it was OK because most of the approaches and takeoffs were to the south and north, which was deliberately left undeveloped or was commercial property

Then louder/bigger airplanes like the 757/767 started operating out of the airport and suddenly people's windows were shaking and it was hard to carry on a conversation if a plane was taking off over your head, especially if the wind conditions made it so takeoffs were to the east.  If I remember correctly the county had to install thicker windows and other soundproofing to a lot of the houses around the area, but someone who was uninformed about the whole change would just be like "well why did you move near an airport?"

A process that will take several years regardless of the option chosen, plus you also have to find a NEW place to dump the trash which means dealing with a second batch of NIMBYs.

Try a powerful green laser. Friend uses it to move geese off his property. Just shine it on the ground next to them (not in the eyes it will blind them) and they take off like it is a predator. Only works at night though or when cloudy enough to make the laser visible.
