Russian athletes who pass a drug test are allowed to compete. Just not for Russia.

It is Russia itself that is banned.

Don't punish the athlete for dumb shiat their country does. This is the lesson learned from 80/84.

What dopes!

2021-07-26 6:01:09 PM
To recap just some of the story: In Sochi, the Russians constructed a building adjacent to the drug-testing lab and then cut a hole in the wall. Each night, after the lab closed, workers passed dirty athlete samples out and clean samples in.

Two predictable things happened: Russia won the most medals. Not a single Russian tested positive. When they got done doping the Olympics, they then did the same at the Paralympics as well, which seems particularly pathetic. Russia won the most medals there, too, of course, more than three times the next-best country.

Russia should never be allowed to host or compete in the Olympics ever again.

Its stupid to punish a clean athlete or an entire nation for decisions of a handful of people who wanted to look good.

Should Japan or Germany be allowed to compete or host, ever again, because of that pesky trying to take over half the world stuff and atrocities that went with it, which also caused the cancellation of the games in the process?

Yeah, I mean... I'd feel bad for the athletes, but if they aren't going to ban the Russian athletes themselves then they need to be a lot more strict about wiping Russian symbolic representation out of the Games entirely.

Create an independent athletes bin, kind of like the refugee team, that everyone from banned nations gets dumped into rather than let them negotiate this "ROC" bullsh*t.  That group should have a standardized uniform that doesn't show any national colors, restrict the music that they can play during routines, and play an Olympics standard song during medal ceremonies.  They're there for themselves, not for a nation, and make it clear that outward attempts to represent their nation publicly will get them DQ'd or medals forfeited.  If they don't like that, don't compete.

What's the difference? If you couldn't figure it out, this olympics have made it clear, there isn't one.

'Russia' was never competing because that's not a thing, athletes from Russia under the Russian flag are. They still are, and they're making it very clear that they are Russians competing in the Olympics. As in, there was no punishment of Russia.

SMB2811: What's the difference?

Half the Russian team isn't here. Because they failed doping tests or their programs were completely dismantled (or they were banned) after evidence of systemic doping fraud.

(Only 335 athletes from Russia are at these games. For comparison, America has sent 613)

The other half were tested vigorously and were admitted under a neutral banner. They don't get to hear the Russian anthem nor see the Russian flag when they win medals. I guess they can wear the colors but who cares.

Point is Russia isn't represented at these games which is a huge slight to someone with an ego as massive as Putin's. He doesn't like this one bit and now he's biatching and crying about it. So is China, but for different reasons.

Autocracies can be very sensitive and insecure about what the world thinks of them.

I disagree. This was not some minor doping scandal where and individual athlete cheated. This was cheating organized and facilitated but the Russian government on a large scale. What happened at the Sochi games was so egregious the IOC needed to send a clear statement that such conduct was reprehensible. If it had been my call every Russian that participated in Sochi would have had their names stricken from the Olympic record and all medals revoked, dirty or clean, and Russian participation in the Olympics would be barred until they fully admit to what they did plus an additional decade. That means no Russian athletes, IOC officials, biding, etc. In addition, because they abused their "host nation" status, Russia would be barred from hosting the Olympics for a period of no less that 25 years.

As it stands now Russians are competing and wearing Russia's colors. For all intents and purposes they are competing for Russia, so in fact the repercussions are so trivial as to be pointless. So, regardless of the impact on the individuals themselves I'm of the opinion that Russian athletes shouldn't be there in any capacity. As for the poor Russian athletes impacted all I can offer is:

1. Life isn't fair.
2. If you're looking for someone to blame, start and stop with your own leaders and officials.
3. Consider relocating to a nation that doesn't have to cheat to win.

The thing is, the Olympics have almost always been about politics and dick-measuring even in ancient times. Those in power will do whatever they think they need to do for prestige. In the end though, your athletes may have won a few medals but that little bit of prestige doesn't help your country out one bit. Corruption, poverty, crime, disease, unemployment, natural disasters...not of those things have been prevented or cured by even a great performance at the Olympic games.

I'm happy for the individual Russian athletes and all others who do well (assuming they're clean). Good for them. But it doesn't mean a goddarned thing either way.

I'm not much for sports, but I will say that Russia doesn't deserve the athletes they're exploiting right now. Those athletes stood firm when everyone else didn't; they deserve a real team, made up of people who know what it's like to do the right thing against odds. Give them a real team, with real colors, a real song, and the same rewards everyone else gets--not for the nation that f*cked up, but for their adherence to honesty.

/and for once, I see a group of people I actually think deserve celeb status. It's not often someone stands up for fairness when the fame's there; that should be lauded.

ONE gold medal in an Olympics where the best didn't play. Good job, inferior country.

Remember when we won in YOUR barn? We made it look like a clinical formality. It was almost boring the way we won so easily. 1 goal against in the entire 2nd round. You couldn't even get past the quarter finals.

Or howabout 2010. Remember when we scored 4 goals on you in one period, en route to a 7-3 rout? In fact, let's watch Rick Nash's goal, it's just so epic.

Rick Nash goal vs Russia
Youtube 22Erp6ETFUU

The only tournaments that matter are Canada Cups (76,81,84,87,91), World Cups (96, 04), and the Olympics from 98-14. Those are the only best-on-best tournaments hockey has ever offered. Of those 12 tournaments, Canada has won 8 of them (USA, Czechia, Sweden, USSR won the others). I don't count that weird World Cup thing the NHL did in 2016 because it was a gimmick involving only NHL players with no IIHF participation so it's not a true best-on-best, but Canada won that too.

So yeah. Enjoy your faux-gold in a shiatty c-grade tournament against amateur opposition because you know that when it comes to REAL hockey tournament where Canada sends its A-team, you get pantsed every time (except for 81. That's your one. But it was also 40 years ago).

Dont ban them, just level the playing field. Assume all the Russian athletes are doping & give everybody else a 20% head start on them.

Also make them go last at all the ceremonies & instead of carrying their national flag they carry a big white banner that says "Russia is a nation of cowardly cheaters" on it.

They may decide on their own not to participate, and thats fine.

The russian athletes are treating the ban as a joke and purposely flaunting their nation despite the ban.  They know they cheated and think it's perfectly acceptable, so are annoyed they got banned when they were caught.  That's why a total ban would have been appropriate.

I think that they should be forced to compete for a country they can't stand.  If the Russian athletes want to compete, they have to be part of team Ukraine.  Either that or a really small country.  Time for Bermuda to get a record medal haul.

The russian athletes are scrutinized more than anyone else, have a clean history, Let them compete in the one shot most of them have in their life in their sport, let them earn Russia an asterisk, and we can all enjoy competition.
