The globe is *Literally* on fire, or historically flooding - Multiple economic crashes barely decades apart - a ghost town of a housing market - a multi-year global pandemic - wealth concentration at the .01% level - terrible pay/COL equations - blocking unionization/workers rights - abusive militarized police, without the restraint or training of actual military -  You can't afford X for a monthly mortgage payment!  Pay 1.5x for rent instead! - endless wars for the last... 30...years? 50 if we include stuff like Korea, Cold War, Vietnam... How far has the IMC been milking the gov for funds to make the rich richer? Oh, and a billionaire 3-way space race to determine who's got the biggest "rocket"

But, yeah... totes facebook causing generational depression.

I've found that the most miserable people are the ones consistently thinking about themselves, their desires and their fears. The what-about-me crowd.

The happiest people I know are the ones who have built lives that force them to consistently think about others: there are careers that demand the ego is checked at the door.

Social media twists up the first group; the second group doesn't have the time for it.

Facebook may not cause mental illness per se. But it definitely feeds it, grows it, and gives it wildly unhelpful echo chambers as opposed to facts. To say that Facebook exacerbates it seems pretty obvious.

Social media has always been, and will always be, a terrible idea with no possible balance on redeeming factors. Tack in "news" and keep regulation out about privacy, preying on people via psychological techniques... Yes, it's dangerous as all hell.

Can you name a single thing on your list that social media didn't make worse?

Also, historically, there's an economic crisis about every 7 years. See Dept of Labor historical trends, that's not new.

Where does TFA blame Facebook?

Why not places like Fark's politics tab?
Doing a fine job yourself, young man, except you omitted climate change. You could have worked it into the billionaire comment.
Not to cast aspersions on the correlation of AGW with CO2 emissions, only to suggest that the internet should be feeding your anxiety more on the subject.

You think everything isn't connected? It is Facebook, etc, that led us on this final spending orgy that we're now thinking twice about. Pointless consumption has skyrocketed in the 21st century.

Ecopsychology explores humans' psychological interdependence with the rest of nature and the implications for identity, health and well-being. Ecopsychology topics include emotional responses to nature; the impacts of environmental issues such as natural disasters and global climate change; and the transpersonal dimensions of environmental identity and concern.
***********

He was camping out with the chickens in the backyard of their communal headquarters a few months later when a crusty old anarchist with dreadlocks and a piercing gaze handed him a dog-eared book called Industrial Society and Its Future. The author was FC, whoever that was. Jacobi glanced at the first line: "The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race."

This guy sure gets to the point, he thought. ..
There were two main themes. First, we've become so dependent on technology that the real decisions about our lives are made by unseen forces like corporations and market flows. Our lives are "modified to fit the needs of this system," and the diseases of modern life are the result: "Boredom, demoralization, low self-esteem, inferiority feelings, defeatism, depression, anxiety, guilt, frustration, hostility, spouse or child abuse, insatiable hedonism, abnormal sexual behavior, sleep disorders, eating disorders, etc." Jacobi had experienced most of those himself.

The second point was that technology's dark momentum can't be stopped. With each improvement, the graceful schooner that sails our shorelines becomes the hulking megatanker that takes our jobs. The car's a blast bouncing along at the reckless speed of 20 mph, but pretty soon we're buying insurance, producing our license and registration if we fail to obey posted signs, and cursing when one of those charming behavior-modification devices in orange envelopes shows up on our windshields. We doze off while exploring a fun new thing called social media and wake up to big data, fake news, and Total Information Awareness.
The clue arrived in section No. 96: "In order to get our message before the public with some chance of making a lasting impression, we've had to kill people," the mystery author wrote.
"Kill people" - Jacobi realized that he was reading the words of the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski,

Funny how that chart only goes back to the 1970s.  Interesting how it shows the Wall Street Journal being founded in 1995.

The current tension is round four of America struggling with its own ideals regarding people and race.

Round 1 1775-1787: The Declaration of Independence/The Constitution - Look at the stuff that was edited out of the Declaration and the 3/5ths compromise in the Constitution.

Round 2 1861-1877: The US Civil War and the Reconstruction era.  The 1877 Compromise is what allowed white supremist to retake political power in the South.

Round 3 1947-1968: Post WW II to the Civil Rights act of 1968.  Really, no press coverage of this era?

Round 4 2015-Present

During each of these eras do you honestly think the press sat it out?  Or have we, as a nation, finally gotten to the point where we can stop pretending it doesn't exist?

well the AI's for engagement are pretty complete at this point, might just need a AI that detect all content made to be engaging.

then ban engaging content.
have A.I police it.

get a internet with not a lot of photo / video / music that is as dry as a 90 y/o accountant doing a 6 hour speech on taxes.

problem solved.

It all started with the invention of language and has been going down hill ever since.  Fortunately we are now heading into the post language era, or the Emojicene.  That should fix everything.  We are almost at the other side people :-)

Social media is designed to manipulate you. Their agenda is to piss you off, keep you pissed off and make sure you're always pissed off. It drives "interactions"which drives revenue. They make money playing the hate game and you're just a game piece.

Stop using social media, for just a week or so, and see how you feel. You might get anxious at first if your identity is very closely tied to your online presence but it gets better. Way better. You'll be so much happier not giving a shiat about many things that only exist on social media and you can use that time for something worthwhile.

We've been in the second Cold War for since Reagan and the rise of the conservative think tank.  It's  a cold civil war in appearance, driven by very wealth groups to beeome more wealthy and insulated.  They appear to be winning.

Facebook's algorithm is to find what what "engages" you... and that generally means negative engagement. So it figures out what what makes you angry and feeling the need to comment about it, then shoves more of it - and more extreme versions of it - down your throat, so you spend more time on the site and they can display more ads for profit. That's literally their business model, and there's no way in hell that's good for anyone's mental health, even when they're not literally performing psychological experiments on their userbase (yes, that happened).

There is indeed a LOT going wrong with the world right now, so anyone expecting levels of mental illness to be normal with or without social media isn't paying attention to actual reality, as you said... but there's no question that social media in general, and Facebook specifically with several exclamation points, is not only making all of those problems worse, but causing more severe reactions to them... and conflict for the sake of conflict, not conflict directed at actually fixing anything.

So no, Facebook didn't cause most of the world's problems, but it made all of them worse, and was a primary factor in at least a few of them (look up the Myanmar genocide). Meanwhile, when I look at the upside of Facebook... there isn't one. I can keep in touch with friends via programs like Discord, where we can simply talk to each other and not be manipulated in any way, so why would I use FB... for anything?

Whatever.  I've been on the Internet since Gore built it in the 70s and it has done nothing but increase my cognition. Without the Internet, I would still be ignorant of many things. AOC's made up global warming nonsense to get back at Republicans, who are the true caretakers of the land and want everybody to have a Ford Super Duty. I might have been fooled about the COVID hoax if it were not for Facebook.  Nobody would have even noticed Pelosi stealing the election for Biden if patriots had not found the proof in her office.  Wake up.
