BMX bikes and skateboards were already cool before Spielberg put them in movies. He put them in movies BECAUSE they were cool, not the other way around.

What a load of absolute shiat. The likes of me and my mates and other like minded people across the world who were skating in the mid to late 80s are the type of people who kept it going and deserve the credit.

The Olympic debut in Tokyo of BMX freestyle also owes a debt to Hollywood, because it was Steven Spielberg's movie "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" that showcased the acrobatic sport's wow factor to mainstream audiences.

Nope.

Actually, I've seen a lot of skaters cite Back to the Future as being their first exposure to skateboarding.

Confabulat: BMX bikes and skateboards were already cool before Spielberg put them in movies. He put them in movies BECAUSE they were cool, not the other way around.

Of course, but would you disagree that the movies exposed the masses to what had previously been a cool niche activity?

100%. Tony Hawk says in this video (start at 28:52) that BttF influenced a whole generation of kids to try skating and that it was one of the biggest reasons the sport blew up in the '80s.

If we're gonna talk about the crossover between skating & filmmaking, his name needs to be mentioned in the first breath.

I also love his cameo as the spaceship pilot in the beginning of 'Real Genius'.

When I was doing acid drops off of smelly loading docks I was thinking about ET and Back to the Future.

Thats because they were born in the 70s. My first good road rash was tearing skin off both my knees coming down a bowl, in a crowded concrete skate park, in 1977. My guess these idiots never saw a Torker, also came out in 1977 and made Haro's first BMX bikes in 81-82.

These guys are farking delusional. BMX and staking was huge in the late 70s early 80s, sure it got nuts in the mid 80s as the sport grew but that wasn't because a bunch of kids doing no tricks in ET in 82 or Marty's lame crap in 1985.

Evel Knievel made concept of bmx happen in my neighborhood. Everyone wanted to jump stuff and it turned out that bmx bikes were perfect for that. This was around the time of Jaws, so Spielberg wasn't close to being in on it. I say concept because it was awhile before bmx specific bikes started showing up. Until then everyone just got a Schwinn and made a dirt bike out of it. Strip the bike down, paint it, upgrade to heavy duty rims/forks/'handlebars and you could ride anywhere and jump anything. My first actual bmx bike was a CYC Stormer, it was pretty cool but kind of heavy.

Yes, many of the kids that began skating during skateboardings resurgence in the mid 80's were inspired by Back to the Future. I have vast amounts of useless skateboard knowledge in my brain.
