Fewer.

Seriously though, democracy is one of those practices you have to believe in, have allegiance to, or it just becomes a meaningless exercise until it is degenerate and dysfunctional..

These assholes are rooting for fascism.

Hope y'all had a great Saturday. Rainy here all day.

Fine, if voting is a privilege, then so is owning guns.

That's how this is gonna work.

I was going to say that if you ask about guns it will be opposite but not to the same extent.  Problem is the question.  All rights can have limits to them but the difference is the bar is higher to limit a right (voting, guns) than a privilege (driving).

I'd you don't believe in democracy, then you believe in rich people ruling and/or owning you, whether it be via religion or exception from the law; that's what history proves repeatedly.

Old White people.

If voting is a privilege, then we should institute an age maximum for voting.

50 sounds right.

Funny thing about "belief".

2021-07-24 10:37:47 PM
I'll go one step further: voting should be mandatory.

2021-07-24 10:37:49 PM
I'm happy to make voting a privilege. Only that it's a privilege that only non-Republicans can attain. The Republicans will not have that privilege. fark them.

There's a reason why Republicans like DeSantis want college professors to register their party affiliation. There's a reason why Boomers are getting scared as their generation dies off. There's a reason why CRT and immigration are huge issues again. As this country becomes younger, more educated, and more diverse, the GOP is going to become extinct unless they change, and it's become pretty obvious they don't plan on changing.

It's been posted before but:

"If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy."

- David Frum

Seeing the reaction in various red states to Trump losing shows the above to be true.

Sounds 2/3 of conservatives should lose their right to vote.

Yep. America is leaving Republicans behind, and as it does so, Republicans will resort to more and more blatant cheating until they're either stomped into the dirt or they take absolute power, Constitution be damned.

And it looks an awful lot like we're in the very late stages of that process, given how we already had one coup attempt and how Republican states are outright saying the (Republican) legislatures can overturn elections they don't like.

The problem I have with surveys like this is when the choices are so nebulous. Both choices are too broad in scope, making any conclusions drawn from the results speak as much to the viewer's beliefs about what those choices mean as much as anything else.

Meh. Democracy is a pretty shiatty system for the individual if they're in the minority. Making voting rights a privilege isn't necessarily a bad idea. Let's just make the eligibility focused on things like acceptance of science and understanding of history, kthxbai.

Luckily, a lot of conservative politicians won't care since they're old themselves and will either retire or die, and if it doesn't affect them they don't care.  Aside from a general desire to make others suffer anyway.

I try not to make my personal life a major topic of conversation, but I'm pretty sure I've shared it along the way since it's been almost a year. Maybe it just wasn't in a thread we were in together?

talkertopc: Voting being a privilege can only make things worst for minorities.

Voting is already a privilege in USA - it is only extended to 'citizens', those over 18, and, in many states, those who are not convicted felons. The important underlying protection in a modern democracy is a constitution that guarantees certain minority rights. Otherwise, democracy is just another form of oppression.

2021-07-24 11:27:54 PM
And there are plenty of "liberals" who will defend:

- our system of presidential primaries
- the Electoral College
- the disenfranchisement of convicts and felons

... all of which are anti-democratic forms of oppression.

If voting is a privilege then the contents of that constitution which you say is protecting minority rights is subject to change at the whim of the privileged. So the minority rights could disappear some day. If voting is a right, then the laws can protect minority rights without them being in a constitution.

Just because something is restricted to a specific age/group, doesn't mean it isn't a right.
Right vs privilege can be summed up pretty easily; Check out gun-nuts arguing about their "Right to bear arms" and may-issue vs shall-issue. May-issue is a privilege. Shall-issue is a right.
Rights are not revoked, assuming you meet the basic criterion for the right.
Privileges can be revoked, even if you meet the criteria.

Don't forget the artificial limits on the number of members in the House of Representatives. As the population grows, the current House size becomes more and more anti-democratic.
