I'd given that some thought as a sullen youngster. My parents didn't like me reading books all weekend, so they made sure that I was their landscaping and lawn care specialist, starting at around age 8, probably why I've been a renter/condo owner all of my adult life.

Same here, I hate the outdoors now and rarely spend time outside.  My next rental will hopefully be an apartment.  I also have a fierce aversion to clutter, cardboard boxes, rubbermaid containers, and personal property that hasn't been used within a certain calendar timeframe, but that's because my parents were and still are hoarders.

Now I'm curious--how much labor can you force your children to do without compensation* before it runs afoul of the law? Maybe that's a sort of hypothetical question but it does seem to have real-world legal relevance.

/* it's really not fair to call "I feed you and give you a roof over your head" compensation because 1) the child didn't choose to be born into your family and 2) they don't really have the ability or the means to go elsewhere

During their last move, they hired professionals and had a semi and a 28 foot street truck, but left enough behind to avoid having their house look vacant.  And didn't clear out their storage units completely.  They did enough Uhauls to finish up, that it was an equivalent to a second semi.  And that's just the personal property of two people.

Meanwhile, I can do a small Uhaul trailer and the bed of a pickup, with clothes and muskets in my car.

Equity is not useful if you end up homeless in order to pull it out.  Equity in a house is only useful when it comes time to move to a more expensive house.

So for people who are happy to rent, the whole "you don't have equity" thing is you insulting their intelligence, not a convincing argument.

That's not entirely true. While building up equity you're building up wealth. Rent payments aren't like mortgage payments - rent is just gone after you pay it. For mortgage, the payments are essentially banked for you. They're not just useful when you buy a new house. If you sold your house and went in to a rental (which many empty nesters do at the end of their lives) the equity you built up is cash in your pocket.

I feel you. My husband owns approx. one hundred and fifty Lionel train sets. He has them stored in his mom's basement, our backyard shed, our attic and crawlspace. He rents two storage units for all of his tools, drum kits and cameras. I refuse to ever have another box, Rubbermaid container or foot locker in the living space in this house. When he croaks I do not know what I'm going to do with all of it. But I love him, what are ya gonna do?

The money you pay to the back doesn't stay in your pocket unless you have a mythical 0% loan.  The money you spend on upkeep didn't stay in your pocket.  Taxes.  HOA, if you got stuck with that.

There's a lot of money you send away if you own. So now you're just using it as an inefficient savings vehicle.

I'm not saying it's all wrong to care about equity, but it's not the trump card some people think it is.  I care about it a lot because I want to own my home.  (And will finish paying it off in 6 months!) But I'm not going to pretend that someone who doesn't care about owning should change their mind for the sake of equity.
