"Have these people no shame? What about shareholder value? These bureaucrats don't think about the profit margins of our corporate citizens, and it's just heartbreaking! Lives over profit? Who holds with this...this...twaddle?"

Cotton: "If you just turn these decisions over to a bunch of public health bureaucrats, of course the only thing they're gonna consider is what they think is in the best interest of public health."

Incredibly, Roberts remained as stolid as a Moai statue.

Not incredible, it was predictable.

If Tom Cotton wants to have an orgy of COVID variants in his vascular system, he can do that in the privacy of his own home forever, If he walks out of it, he better be Farking vaccinated.

I'm through letting these Farking people jam COVID down the American public's throat.

Yeah, you're not supposed to yell "fire!" in a crowded theater... unless there's a fire.

Here we F-ing are. People are criticizing health officials for trying to act for the public good.

I wonder if healthcare professionals can refuse to provide service.

Tom Cotton has never been a leader of anything in his entire, miserable life. He deserves exactly what history will do to him for his treason and idiocy.

Tom Cotton is absolute evil.  He would be one of the most dangerous people possible to become President -- he has Donald Trump's love of fascism and desire to be a dictator, but he's disciplined enough to actually put in the work that requires.

Remarkable how public health officials only concern themselves with the health of the public.

When there's an ongoing public health crisis, one tends to defer to the interests of public health.

Otherwise, the crisis continues until someone with enough sense to defer to the interests of public health is elected.

And Tom can honestly state that he has never done any such thing, and never will.

Public health decisions should be made by elected politicians so they can balance business interests against the health of citizens. Business involvement is essential to help them line their pockets.

See, this is why you need economists, they'll take into account the strategies of the public health officials, the needs of the people and corporations.

And come to the conclusion that we should just do whatever the public health officials say.

Well, Tom, you're right: the voters did choose their elected representatives (in your case, rather stupidly) with the understanding that those elected representatives would make the decisions.  And in many cases (follow me here), those elected representatives decided to grant public health officials the authority to act in the best interests of public health.

Here, let me draw a little flow chart so your peppercorn-sized brain can comprehend:

Voters elect representatives

Representatives delegate authority to public health officials

Public health officials use that delegated authority to protect the voters

Did you get that, Tom?  No?  Well, I'm not surprised.  Your poor brain has been badly affected by the smell of the bleach you use on those particular white robes you keep carefully hidden in your closet.

This is why there's no point in talking to conservatives. Everything we see as good they see as bad. There's no common ground.

(In fairness to the senator, he said it should be up to elected officials, not bureaucrats to make decisions about public health.)

yes.  We should fairly attribute this particular stupidity to the Senator.  It's about nuance.  Something you libs wouldn't understand.

I had to explain to a relative yesterday that "sustainable design" was like designing a car engine like an old one where it's easy to change the spark plugs without completely disassembling the car.  Guess who's against old cars and changing spark plugs now.

I was one of three Emergency Operations Commanders (PD Chief and Fire Chief were the other two) for the city of Key West during the 2004-2005 hurricane season. 6 hurricanes I helped deal with, one of those Wilma 3,000 homes had ocean in them.

I was a City bureaucrat, I have been trained and certified by the US Coast Guard in 5 different levels of emergency operations incident command and asset logistics. I was the public works director for my community for 10 years, I had direct access to emergency operations commands in all the surrounding counties and my state EOC.

By this clowns logic, the best people to make decisions about local and state emergencies dealing with public health issues is not the bureaucrats that spend their entire carriers preparing for and communicating to our colleges across all the government agencies for events like this, but the people that just got elected into office by saying Jesus every other sentence and dropping racist dog whistles every four seconds that don't have any farking clue of what they are talking about.

At this point there's absolutely nothing the GQP could do to convince me to follow their advice unless it was something I planned on doing anyway. Fark those turds.

What a dumba**.

Elected officials appointed Fauci to do the job for them -- because they're not qualified to do so.

Cotton is basically saying get rid of the bureaucracy, the elected officials will take care of Commerce, Treasury, the Fed, the Pentagon, etc, etc, etc.

2021-07-24 1:17:52 PM
Harvard Tom Cotton certainly amazed his professors with bold statements.

draa: there's absolutely nothing the GQP could do to convince me to follow their advice unless it was something I planned on doing anyway.

FYI, in that event, they STILL didn't convince you.  Honestly, at this point I think if the GQP was suggesting staying hydrated was a good idea, I'd be checking the medical journals for the recently discovered benefits of chronic dehydration.

IamTomJoad: I dunno, if like to hear more about how school kids not wearing  masks spurs the economy.

Poor students spread the virus to their unemployed parents, unemployed parents die from COVID, child goes into foster care to be trafficked into child labor by a "loving Christian family", a burden is taken off the unemployment insurance system and there is a new young worker ready to produce.

/Probably what GQP sociopaths believe

DarkSoulNoHope: Probably what GQP sociopaths believe

I think it's a lot shallower than that.  They think about what they want, right now, and don't stop to consider consequences.

School kids shouldn't wear masks because masks people are telling them to wear masks and they don't want to, so damnit, anyone they can stop from wearing a mask they're going to stop just because.

People on social support are bad, brown people are stealing jobs, non-Christians can't be good because God doesn't love them.  Full stop, no thinking or examining evidence, especially if it contradicts the belief.

Let me say, nobody elected the CDC.
correct.  the CDC is part of the executive branch under Biden

Nobody elected Tony Fauci to make these decisions.
correct.  he is a Biden advisor.  he was a Trump advisor before that.

Advisers advise, elected officials decide.
correct

And the American people elected Joe Biden
correct

...so what the hell is your problem here Mr Cotton?

2021-07-24 2:01:22 PM
Given Tom Cotton has a job, I don't think I can express just how thankful I am that there are no elected positions in the CDC. If there were, we'd all be eating exotic laxatives while chanting to vegan wood spirits to take the ghosts out of our lungs.

Cotton said public officials won't "balance off interests like whether people can make a living to put food on the table, or their kids can learn at school

I'd look up the Senator's votes on various relief and federal unemployment extensions... but I don't think I need to bother.
