(Twitter)   Steven Weinberg has died at age 88 still dreaming of a final theory. He won a Nobel Prize in Physics for electroweak theory and wrote the great popular book "The First Three Minutes"   (twitter.com) divider line

His last writing was "I have a marvelous model of a grand unified theory that explains the particle masses, but this margin is too small to hold it."

Great, just two days ago I snarkily gave some guy Weinberg's e-mail address and said "You can try sending a message to Professor Weinberg, there's at least a CHANCE you'll get a response, unlike God."

I remember this from an early age. As relevant today as it was 36 years ago:

"We haven't come to the bottom level yet, but as we approach it we pick up intimations of an underlying, beautiful theory whose beauty we can only dimly see at the present time.

"We don't know there really is a beautiful underlying theory - we don't know that as a species we're smart enough to learn what it is - but we DO know that if we don't assume there is a beautiful underlying theory and assume that we're smart enough to learn what it is, we never will."

Had Chinese food with him a number of years back.  Friend of a physics professor at UT.  I didn't put it together until later that it was that Stephen Weinberg.  Very nice guy and down to earth.  Sad to see him pass.
