"He is the world's richest man and we have no choice but to cover his hobbies," declared Tucker Carlson on Fox News.

Yes you.do. Being a colossal tool, that you don't seem to have any control over.

If this weren't the worst timeline EVAR, one of those billionaires will blow up in space and I'd be okay with that.

This isn't even the worst - 5 seconds of thought will tell you that.  Is Trump the president with death squads of rednecks hunting everyone else for fun?  No.  Teetering and has been for a while?  Yes.  Worst?  Not even.  And no, them blowing up in space is not cool - then it'll reflect poorly on the space program and we'll have 40 more years of "Never mind" bullshiat because something went wrong once.  DGAF who gets it done, but we need to get out there and get to industrial/mining/etc. work.  Earth's running out of all kinds of shiat, and we have no other options for other places to look.  Long term time.  Even if it's assholes, we have got to get off of this dirtball or we're gonna be stuck in the zero sum bullshiat single planetary resources game forever.  No one wins that game - not even the planet

I'm not a Bezos fan. But there are many technology gains made during these space races, no matter who is doing them.

You're assuming I'm not okay with the human race.

I just substituted Ric Flair in the headline there and it still was awkward but funny.

That may have been true when space travel was first being developed but not joyride that these jerkoffs are doing.

Of course we do. I assume you're talking about Mars because even if we invent faster than light travel, what are the odds of finding a Class M planet outside our solar system?

So what would be more practical, the sci-fi channel fantasy you're proposing or just fixing the rock we're on now?

Washington Post has to cover it, nobody else does.  Luckily, I don't think I've had to hear much of the America's Cup for a few decades, hopefully the media can keep that up.

Really?  Yes I totally talked about colonization.  Wait!  No I didn't it's a farking pipe dream on any large scale till the tech increases enormously.  Resources.  Like I said.  They're out there, we need them.  They will bandaid problems with them we have here on this planet.

What resources would those be?

And you know there was one person in the office that wasn't in on the joke. Probably had no idea that Bezos even has a rocket, nevermind what it looks like.

This made it even funnier when the author hit 'Submit'

Rare metals are one of the chief blockades for high tech production, those are comparatively abundant with asteroids unless spectroscopy's been lying it's ass off to us.  Even bulk basic metals could be done within reason, especially stuff that'd be easier to produce in a lower G environment.  All these things are what would bootstrap a non-sci fi version of orbital manufacturing, which could take a lot of the tech production burden off an increasingly dug out Earth.  None of this is in 10 years, or even 20 - in 50 perhaps we could really get started, but start we must.

Right now there's a strict limit on what we have available, and the more time that passes the more we'll be fighting over what's left.  There's always going to be a reason, often a perfectly good one that we shouldn't start preparing for the future now, leave that for the future.  And invariably, those poor future farkers have to deal with the effects of that.  Space is an expensive but for our purposes limitless source of all sorts of fun stuff - sure we'd run out eventually, but that would be hundreds of years of development at the absolute least.  All the while taking pressure off an increasingly played-out Earth.  That can only get worse the longer we wait to get serious about starting - not figuratively, or exaggeratedly, but literally.

/in this case it'd be technically finite as we'd eventually hit a "How far out does it make sense to look with the tech we have?" barrier
//but that's one that's going to have to be for those poor future farkers I mentioned
///we don't really have any other choices going - the planet only has so much to give
