You don't want a "heat dome". It's very, very bad.

Fun fact: The LEM computed everything in metric and then converted it into Imperial units so the astronauts could read it.  America's spacecraft were fluent in metric and needed to spoon-feed Imperial drivel for the gallant rocketmen.

This is from June 16th:

"No easy way to say this, so we'll just cut straight to the chase: it's going to be *very* hot for a long time," tweeted the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City

in the lead-up to this historic heat wave. This heat wave and the exceptional drought in the Southwest are part of a damaging feedback loop enhanced by climate change, experts say. The hotter it gets, the drier it gets; the drier it gets, the hotter it gets.

It has been 95 + here every day since and there doesn't seem to be any relief on the horizon.

I don't want to hear that, "well, that's just summer" bullshiat. I have lived hear for 16 years and we have never had a 2 month long "heat dome" situation.

A heat dome is a localized high pressure temperature inversion that can last for days, and thanks to global warming, weeks. Guess who reads too much on the Weather websites?

I live in a hot climate, 85-90f most of the year, and it's making me into a hermit because doing anything outside means being sticky, sweaty, and having the energy zapped out of you. In winter i wake up wanting to go to parks to read and have a cup of coffee, i go for hikes and explore the city.

Summer? one trip to get food and the rest of the day I'm inside the house, which sucks. I wonder how many are the same way and how it affects society to have people not wanting to go outside

mr-b: America is Mystery Babylon.

Revelation 17:10 told us when all this stuff would begin.

10There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, (Carter, Bush, Clinton, Obama, Trump) one is (Pence after Trump lost the election because he handed power over to Biden), and the other has not yet come. And when he (Biden) comes, he must continue a short time.

Don't you guys think that it's very peculiar that "Sleepy Joe" from the debates is nowhere to be found? Biden looks like the reincarnation of Kennedy. He looks like the hero saving America. So sharp and energetic. He got covid under control (not really), got everyone back to work and is now going to fix the infrastructure.

Imagine how pissed off people are going to be when a Trumper shoots him deflating the dream of a revived America?

Civil War. Then ten countries gang up and finish America. It's all in Revelation 17 & 18.

Revelation 17:4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. 5For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6Render to her just as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for her. 7In the measure that she glorified herself and lived [e]luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, 'I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.' 8Therefore her plagues will come in one day-death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.

Deuteronomy 18:20-22

So I assume when yet another Biblical prediction fails to come true you're going to kill yourself? I mean death is the penalty for making false predictions under God's name. And you don't want to go against his words, right?

I believe that's called a 'heat island' where urban construction traps heat due to materials, colors, and wind-blocking buildings.

A heat dome is an atmospheric phenomenon where air pressure differentials hold a pocket of hot air in place.

Similar effects, but different causes.

Yeah I'm south of you in WA. you are right. Heat dome is BAAAAD. In caveman units it got up to 112 in my town, with about 75%-80% humidity (typical caveman temps are the low 80s in the summer, with upper 80s considered pretty hot), and the sun at this part of the year goes up before 5am and doesn't go down fully till almost 10pm (as it does where you are). Also other than stores and hotels, nobody really has central a/c, many people not even having an a/c at all (some apartment dwellers forbade from having one with risk of eviction). I have a portable a/c that normally works just fine to cool
my bedroom in the summer, and the stated temp on it the worst day, with it running 24/7 was 95. No idea about the other rooms eith mo a/c. I was having to empty the water from the a/c 4 times each day it was so humid (normally once a week). These 'tough guys' from the desert don't realize... this wasn't a dry heat 112. There is a huge difference.

More than 100 people dropped dead in the state from the heat in a matter of 3 days. I actually drove past a woman who, at 6am, had collapsed on the sidewalk and was unconscious from the heat, face down with sandals fallen off her feet and looked like she fell in the part of the stride that bent her toes clear backwards. Had to call 911 to get her to the hospital. hopefully she wasn't one of the deaths, or wasn't dead already. She was not conscious, and face had probably hit the pavement full force so may have had head trauma if the heat didn't get her.

Entire towns were losing power as underground wires literally melted and it was too hot for humans to go down to replace, restaurants, warehouses and outdoor workplaces had to shut down. Even a lot of stores, who technically have a/c but not units rated for that kind of heat saw a/c units die, and then freezer/coolers die, having to shut down and throw out food. Shellfish were cooked alive in their shells, and still are causing food borne illnesses in people who eat them this year. There were no birds chirping as everything was eerily quiet.

It was bad.

"El Diablo cazador de hombres." Only in the hottest years this happens- and this year, it grows hot. We begin finding our men. We found them sometimes without their skins... and sometimes much, much worse. ..."El cazador trofeo de los hombres" means "the demon who makes trophies of men".

I'm going to get flamed for this (remember when people said that?) but Fahrenheit is the superior temperature measurement.  It's those "every always metric all the time" cockholes who can't do simple math screeching about it.

Metric is nice in certain ways. 1 gram = 1 cubic centimeter of water. That's some good smart shiat.

Everything else, fark, I have a functioning brain and can do simple calculations. And for wrenches, I have two sets. Oh gosh. Apocalypse.

I like fractionals. I appreciate metric. I'm still aggravated trying to figure out thread sizes in either - though I think the Imperial/English/SAE system (what-farking-ever) makes more sense. With so much old stuff out there, and so much new stuff being spectacularly out of spec... it's never going to go away but I wish someone would just pick one farking thing that makes sense. And I still like the simplicity of a slot screw, pretty much hate phillips for aesthetic and cam-out reasons (oh great, that farker's stripped because cheap farking screw factory), square drive is great, hex is nice for machinery, pentalobe is good, but irritating, security pentalobe is just saying "hey fark you, don't open this, even though you're probably smarter than the meth-head who put it together."

Farking fasteners. You know, when you find an old hardware store that hasn't gone to the full Ace bullshiat rebranding, buy all the screws, nuts and bolts you can. The ones in the back of the drawer, with just a bit of rust on them.

heh heh heh. Uhhh no.... We're talking places with typically mild summer climates having 110-120F degrees with high humidity, people by the hundreds dying from the heat, the power going out, animals and sea life dying, wildfires raging, etc etc etc... I live in the Pacific Northwest, which is renowned for very mild pleasant summers, where it's usually low 80s, and when this happened in July, usually still a bit rainy and 60s-70s (summer doesn't start till August, in the PNW usually, and runs into September, then the rain comes back and it's fall weather).

This aint just summer. This shiat was horrible. You had to drive a day or two to find the nearest available a/c unit for sale. It's not common to have a/c in my region. You rarely need it. It pretty much never gets triple digits and it might only hit 90 once in a year every few years. It was 112 with 80% humidity. More than 100 people died in 3 days in my state, which is much higher than covid deaths in that time.

Not flaming you.  You're just wrong.  Metric is superior in every way.  I've spent 30+ years configuring CNC machines (mostly Fanuc controls), installing them around the world, and training operators.  I'm Canadian, so I'm fluent in both inch & metric (I was 10 when we made the switch).  When I would spend a month or more outside North America, on returning to Canada I was struck with how awful Imperial units are.

How much did you spend on two sets of tools?  Don't you think 1/2 that money could be put to better use?

You can continue using fractions in metric, you'll just get odd looks.  BTW, what's 5-15/16" + 3-3/4?  I know you can work it out, as can I.  In metric you'd have something like 125.9 + 75.7, which is much simpler to calculate.

Tap specs?  Again, real easy.  Mdia x pitch.  M10-1.5 is 10mm dia and 1mm pitch.  Tap drill dia is 8.5mm.  Contrast to the inch examples: 1/2-13, so 1/2" dia and 13 TPI (which is 1/13=0.077" pitch).  And tap drill might be a letter, number, or decimal inch size.  Not to mention there's the "#-TPI" and "fractional-TPI" split; below 1/4" the #-TPI convention is used, where the # is some arbitrary value starting at 0 and ending at 12, then switches to fractional"-TPI for the larger (>1/4" dia) sizes.

You didn't mention, but I will... every modern CNC is fundamentally a metric machine.  And in metric mode, with 3 decimal places, you are specifying positions 2.54 more accurate than in 4 decimal place inch mode.

You mention Fahrenheit is best for temperature.  Bullshiat.  It's just what you're used to.  And ironically, it's also the easiest to assimilate.   Not everyone measures or weighs things, but everyone "lives" in the current temperature, so you very quickly relate the Celsius value to the current temperature.

The USA can do it.  You guys put men on the moon, after all.  We Canadians are doing it.  It's a long process, but so worth it!  I figure 4 or 5 generations are needed to flush out all the old machinery.  My kids were not taught inch units in school, but are well aware of it and deal with easily.  So my great-great grandchildren should be free of the nonsense that is "Imperial" units.

As for screwdrivers, Robertson ("square" in caveman speak) is ideal for most applications.  But stay away from the cheap drivers.

I bet we agree on one thing: the fasteners that have all three common heads (slot, Phillips, Robertson) are the worst!  I think someone who's never used a screwdriver invented them.

Cheers!

Summer? one trip to get food and the rest of the day I'm inside the house, which sucks. I wonder how many are the same way and how it affects society to have people not wanting to go outside

That's pretty much the Phoenix area every summer. During the day time if absolutely had to go out you pretty much dash from air conditioned space to air conditioned space. With pauses to let the car cool before getting in, much like you let them warm up in cold climates. When you can arrange it, do everything else after sundown.

When I first moved there I had a black car with charcoal interior. I made the mistake of parking it when I was going to be getting in and out of it a few times during the afternoon. The first time it was like opening an oven. I had to leave the doors open for five to ten minutes for it to cool enough to sit in long enough to turn on the A/C.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Its was more like 700 people in BC alone just during that week.  The temps are still wild heading east.  My parents in Ontario say they are experiencing more 30°C+ days every year.  Last year they had more in June than in all of 2019.  Also, the heat and lack of rainfall means everything is at risk of fire.  In my area of BC, they are telling us to keep our (dead) lawns trimmed down and remove any other fire hazards from our properties.  Sea life is just cooking to death, since even 10m below sea level, the water is too warm for them, and when tide recedes, the tidal pools can heat to over 40°C.  Wildlife experts are forecasting that because of the heat, we may lose a whole generation of young wild salmon.
Fun indeed.

I took geology in college.  The final exam was a brutally long 200 question thing.  The school didn't give +/- grades, so if you were going to get a B you weren't worrying about whether it was a low or high B, and I'd blown the first exam.  I'd done the math, and with the weighting of the grades from the different exams I could basically have just randomly guessed on every question to fail but even a perfect score wouldn't have bumped me up to an A.  So, around question 120 or so I knew I'd locked in a B.  It was just a matter of pride to finish this damned exam.  And then there it was, answer C, question, "What is a dome of depression?"  Answer C... the feeling that descends over a class during a 200 question final exam.  I chuckled.  Everyone looked at me funny.  It shook the dome of depression off of me and I soldiered on and finished.

Of course, it really didn't matter.  I still got a B, and that cost me a 4.0 for the semester, but I still remember what a dome of depression is.

The jet stream pretty much doesn't even exist anymore as a reliable factor in whether generation in the northern hemisphere. We broke it and the damage is still developing.

In many ways it's already too late and we broke it.

Something ate the rest of my post. This is what people were afraid of from the beginning, not so much global warming or sea levels Rising but increased instability in our weather culminating in our weather simply bouncing back and forth from one extreme to another increasingly erratic fashions.

Pretty much this. Although warming and sea levels, I would say are a pretty significant issue. Erratic, and extreme are maybe more alarming (well not sea level(That's terifying)) I live inland so don't really care. Maybe I'll end up with beachfront property.

One of the biggest problems that I see as far as local agriculture is concerned is that it's not so much the amount of water that crops get but when that water is delivered to the crops. So many crops depend on water being delivered to them as part of Springtime melting and relatively reliable deliveries via Rainwater. That Springtime melt is gone here in Northeast Ohio and it barely exists anymore. Add to that the highly erratic method that rainwater is delivered, it is almost a series of mini monsoons that visit our area multiple times over the summer. Crops like corn don't handle that very well.

Our local agriculture is going to have to change, Farmers that have made their lives on corn are going to have to start changing to other crops that can handle the water better. We might be transitioning to soy beans and rice over everything else.

The problems surrounding climate change are going to be complex and highly damaging for a long time.

But I guess that for a short time the investors made a lot of money so I guess that balances out.

in the late nineteen-eighties I found myself driving from Chico, California to nearby Oroville. On the way, I noticed a new subdivision on the outskirts of Chico; the houses were classic two-story affairs such as you find in the eastern states, but sitting in the hot, blazing sun of the Central Valley, with minimal eaves.

I concluded that an incompetent architect had designed these, an architect who didn't understand the importance of shade in such climates. And that's even with AC running.

Where is Frank Lloyd Wright when we need him? At least some of his designs included the wide eaves you need to get a little shade in the Central Valley.

I am also a little surprised that the building code (there and then) allowed such stupidities.

It is quite possible, of course, that the developer had picked the house design(s) out of a catalogue of Spiffy House Designs for New England and no architect was directly involved.

1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

"Childish things" - you know, like the need for religion and a big sky daddy to explain away everything I don't understand and to smite all those whom I don't like or agree with.

Ok, you play the child and I'll play the prophet of God and we'll see who's still here in 3 years.

I've read that some erudite people think that there is no such thing as "average weather" because the weather, when graphed (temperature or any other applicable metric), apparent;y has a fractal nature; it is self-similar. Hence, the "average" varies just as much as the basic data.

Since christ will come into his own at age 33, we have until 2034, so the players aren't on the field just yet but we're close.
